A very easy reading adventure. Same and Remi, even when they try to take a vacation fall into treasure hunting. The characters are well developed and enjoyable. The plot is fast moving, if a bit predictable, the settings are interesting and you always learn just the tiniest bit of history when you read their books.Even though the reader can see some things coming a mile away, there are always a couple of surprises to keep things interesting.Settings changed quickly in this tale. One minute they were here and suddenly they were there. I think the transition could have been slowed just a little. I also could have used a bit more wrap up in the end. It would have been nice to bring back the woman who had started this whole adventure in the first place. I also kept asking WHY they did not keep the security guys with them once they knew this was going to be a dangerous hunt. It did not make sense to me that after security saved their bacon the first time, they would continue on with absolutely no backup, especially after the kidnapping. But those things did not really detract much from my enjoyment of the book so I still decided 4 stars were warranted.

The theme is consistent with the seven previous Sam and Remi Fargo stories; i.e., a hunt for treasure, someone out to obtain the same treasure and kill Sam and Remi during the hunt. What starts out as a simple (Remi hoped) purchase to add to Sam’s treasured book collection soon turns into a fast paced treasure hunt, suspected betrayal and another clash of competing mission objectives? Given Sam’s background with DARPA, it is a little surprising that they both act a little naive about their opponents’ objectives, i.e. their deaths. However, after several attempts to kill the both of them, Sam calls in an old acquaintance to assist in security and aid in the capture of their assailants. Their deception fails, no contact is made by their assailants but Sam sends the old friend back home to do some research. Why send the back-up packing??The author(s) have achieved their objective in capturing the reader’s attention and getting them involved in the story. With Sam and Remi traveling around the world on a Chapter by Chapter (almost) change in locale, the reader has to be involved in the story. What does distract from the story is Sam and Remi’s obsession with staying at the finest hotels and eating in the finest restaurants along the way. I don’t begrudge their obsession with the finest but someone is trying their level best to kill them! The story is similar to the books in Steve Berry’s Cotton Malone series (similar but not equal). Fast paced adventure backed by some actual history, different locales (cities, hotels and restaurants) and a decoding of the mystery of the actual treasure location. I recommend this book simply for the history and different cities that Sam and Remi visit. While the solving of the location mystery is interesting, the antics of Sam and Remi are entertaining. Good entertainment story.

Into the deep By Aris spanosPirate, by Clive Cussler is an adventure novel in the “Fargo series”. In this series unstoppable husband and wife team Sam and Remi Fargo fly out on their private jet to extravagant destinations and finding adventure along the way. The story depicts Sam and Remi on a beach in the south pacific when they stumble upon a clue to a large hidden treasure in the deep. The three main characters- Sam, Remi, and JackSam and Remi are a married couple who travel across the world and always find adventure. They are thrill seeking people who are willing to take risks and are always ready for adventure. They both are very experienced in the water, being scuba divers and are good boat captains.Next Jack Is an eccentric millionaire who will do whatever it takes for a quick buck. He is a very greedy man who will sacrifice the safety of his team to make money. Also he is very impatient even though there is a race to find the treasure he only cares about himself making money. This book takes place in a small unknown island in the middle of the south pacific in modern times. This setting is very important, because the the island is so secluded if something goes wrong during a dive or their boat sinks it is sudden death. That is why during chapter 12 they found a dead body near one of their clues showing how dangerous their journey to the treasure is. Also it shows how bad what Jack is doing by only caring about the money and not his team. The entire book is about Courage and Discovery. This is because all the odds there against Sam and Remi. They found a dead body and did not get discouraged, they were against a millionaire who would do whatever he could to find the treasure, they powered though all of their gear failure and still discovered the treasure and beat jack.Lastly my favorite part of this novel is the scene where Sam is 50 meter below the surface and is in view to one of the best leads they have when a critical hose in his regulator bursts sending him flying to the surface and nearly ending the race altogether, this took place near the middle of the novel on pg 213-218 chapter 19. This was very scary for me being a scuba diver and knowing what would be going through his head as his first stage hose was breaking .But like any book, this was not perfect, I feel as though the author could have added a few more scuba gear failures to make the hunt even more of a struggle as in already was. Also I would have liked a few more details about the surrounding fish and the coral structures in general. There were no mistakes generally and this book was very entertaining and a good way to spend my free time, and it was great to come home from school and read this book. Lastly if I were to rate this book I would give it a 4.5 stars. I believe no book is perfect and this book is not eather. It is a great book but is missing a few details I would have liked to have seen that is why I gave this novel a 4.5 out of a perfect 5 stars.

What a fun read! Remi and Sam gallop round the Atlantic in search of King John's lost treasure. From Brazil to Jamaica and finally to England the search above and below twists and turns. Of course there is the requisite cameo by Clive Cussler, too. This was just the light reading I needed in a dreadful week of nasty political news here in the USA.Pick it up (or download to your Kindle) and enjoy.

Hero Found: The Greatest POW Escape of the Vietnam War, by Bruce Henderson

From Publishers Weekly

Only a handful of Vietnam War POWs escaped captivity. One of those was Dieter Dengler, a German-born navy Skyraider pilot shot down on his first mission over Laos in 1966 and taken prisoner by the Pathet Lao in a remote jungle camp. Tortured and nearly starved to death, Dengler led his fellow prisoners in a daring escape, and he miraculously survived 23 days in the jungle before an inexperienced pilot spotted him frantically signaling from the dense jungle just over the border in North Vietnam. Dengler's harrowing and amazing story has been told before : in his 1978 memoir, Escape from Laos, and in two films, Werner Herzog's documentary Little Dieter Needs to Fly and a feature film, Rescue Dawn. Henderson, who served as a navy weatherman aboard Dengler's aircraft carrier, has crafted a worthy narrative that adds new material based on interviews with Dengler (who died in 2001) and his navy comrades, friends. and family, along with newly unearthed archival records. These include the official 78-page military Dengler Debriefing, which Henderson (coauthor, And the Sea Will Tell) obtained through the Freedom of Information Act. This often riveting account sheds new light on an oft-told true story. (June) Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

From the Back Cover

In February 1966, Dieter Dengler was shot down over “neutral” Laos in territory controlled by Pathet Lao guerrillas and North Vietnamese regulars. After his capture, the German-born Dengler proved to be no ordinary prisoner. Already a legend in the navy for his unique escape skills, which he had demonstrated during survival training in the California desert, he found himself caught in a desperate situation, imprisoned by the enemy and by the jungle itself. Dengler's heroic impulse was to free not only himself but also other POWs—American, Thai, and Chinese—some of whom had been held for years. In a surreal scene of brotherhood and celebration, Dengler, nearly six months after being shot down, returned to his ship in the Gulf of Tonkin—emaciated and ravaged with tropical maladies, but alive and free.Bruce Henderson served with Dengler aboard USS Ranger. In this gripping book, he tells the complete story for the first time, drawing on personal interviews with the intrepid pilot, his squadron mates, and his friends and family, as well as military archival materials—some never before made public—and letters and journals. Henderson's riveting account demonstrates why Dengler's story of unending optimism, innate courage, loyalty, and survival against overwhelming odds remains for his fellow flyers and shipmates the best and brightest memory of their generation's war.

We live in an age of celebrity as created by an immense media industry. Lawrence of Arabia embodied the word celebrity; in fact he may have been the 20th century's first real celebrity as Lindberg came after him. This book cries out to be read by a readership that understands that heroes do in fact exist. This word hero has been much misused in modern day America to apply to people that the word was never intended for.Lawrence was very much a hero, as well as many other things. He was a military genius on a level with Napoleon. He also possessed a genius for guerilla warfare and his techniques are taught at West Point as we speak. Possessing a talent for writing, his Seven Pillars of Wisdom is considered a literary masterpiece. His direct actions changed the entire map of the Middle East, and the inability of politicians to adjust to the realities of this region that Lawrence saw so vividly have led to the chaos that we see in the Middle East today.Sheikh Hamoud had it right when he wrote so many years ago of Lawrence:My heart was iron, but his was steelIf you love great, gifted, writing on an immense topic describing a man that truly impacted and changed the world that he saw, than Michael Korda's biography of Lawrence of Arabia is for you. This is a 700 page narrative before footnotes and biography. The quality of the paper used in the book is fabulous, and this is due to Korda's lifetime in the publishing industry. The selection of the font and the feel of the book left nothing to chance. Korda thought through every aspect of this project and brought it off with flair, and panache. He is a master storyteller and he has demonstrated considerable scholarship in creating this page turner which is so sweeping in scope covering one of the giants of the 20th century. Here are just a few of the things you will learn about Lawrence of Arabia:* In his early 30's he translated Homer's The Odyssey which then became accepted as the classic account of Homer's work.* Why King George on Lawrence's untimely death in 1935 said his name will live in history?* He possessed a dazzling display of knowledge, almost Einstein like in the topics he could converse in. Lawrence never did anything halfway. If he was in, he was in all the way.* As a young man, an illegitimate son, along with 4 other brothers, he managed to do amazing things at Oxford. He studied and more importantly absorbed the works of every great military tactician including Admiral Mahan, and Creasy's 15 Decisive Battles of the World. Lawrence's own thesis, The Influence of the Crusades on European Military Architecture was recognized as an act of genius when he presented it.* Liddell Hart considered to be one of the truly eminent military writers of the 20th century compared Lawrence to Napoleon, and used the term Napoleon coined "le coup doeil de genie" which means quick glance of genius. What this describes is that Lawrence had the scarce ability to look at a map (remember he was also a master mapmaker) and immediately know where to attack based on a unique ability in a glance to know intuitively how to attack. This is still studied at West Point, and is very rare in generals throughout history.* If you want to know the depth of his influence on all who came after him, than consider this. Mao Zedong led a revolution in China based on his writings and theories. Ho Chi Minh forced the United States out of Viet Nam based on Lawrence's theories of guerilla war. I haven't even mentioned Castro and Che in Cuba using Lawrence as a blueprint for winning in Cuba. Lawrence is the original creator of the road side bomb we now see in Iraq and Afghanistan. He knew how to strike light, and disappear into the night. The term turn weakness into strength is his.* The story of the making of the David Lean movie, Lawrence of Arabia which was nominated for 10 Academy Awards, and won 7 is told here in a beautiful fashion. Only Sam Spiegel, the producer at Columbia Pictures could have gotten this movie done. You will learn how the part was first offered to Leslie Howard, Lawrence Olivier, and then Albert Finney, until settling on newcomer Peter O'Toole. In conclusion, if you love history and the grand expanse of extraordinary people doing extraordinary things then you are going to love this book. Lawrence was Hollywood handsome with a magnetic personality and charisma to match. His influence directly led to the creation of the modern Jordan, and the UAR (United Arab Republic). Iraq and Syria now owe their modern boundaries to Lawrence. Since the 1960's England has opened up its secret historical files on Lawrence. We now know that all the wild stories about Lawrence are true. It actually comes down to this. Lawrence did what he said he did, and even downplayed his own role in the affairs of which we know about.I promise you that if you begin reading this book, you will not put it down, and you will be transfixed by what a gifted writer like Korda can do with a legendary impactful figure like Lawrence of Arabia. Thank you for reading this review.Richard C. Stoyeck

This a very well writen and interesting book about a facinating man who lived and was a major player during a critical period in our history. However, there are 1-3 typos on almost every page of the book I have read so far and I'm on chapter 4. Almost all of the typos involve one, two or sometimes three words bunched together to form word-abominations such as:"himhave" "timewas" "anadventure" "discribinghis" etc.I guess these errors were introduced when the book was digitized. I also guess that the book was not proof-read after this procedure. These errors are begining to distract from my reading pleasure. A corrected version would be appreciated.

One of the best stories I've read about man's extraordinary will to live, and how this helped bring about rescue during escape as a POW. In the same league as "Into the Mouth of the Cat," (the story of, Vietnam, POW Lance Sijon and his refusal to submit to his captors demands while being held prisoner in North Vietnam's, ill-famed, Hoa Lo Prison and his subsequent heroics leading to his being awarded, posthumously, the Medal of Honor), and "Code of Honor" (Col. John Dramesi's story of his time held as a, Vietnam, POW, and of his strict adherence to the 'Code of Conduct' , and at what costs he did this). A must-read (this, and the other two books that I mentioned) for anyone who wants to know what a true hero is made of.

This book is not only a very well researched and written story of Dieter Dengler's life that covered his childhood in wartime and postwar Germany, through his early learning how to survive, on to his interesting quest to come to the USA and become a pilot, through his early disappointments in the Air Force, on the college to get an AA, and then on to acceptance and training to become a naval aviator, and his service during the Vietnam War, capture in Laos, treatment and daring escape and rescue. This book is not only brilliantly written but in great depth covers the dangers, skills, successes and sometime failure of the brave men and women who succeed in become a Naval Aviator, a skill more demanding than perhaps any other form of piloting an aircraft due to the demanding and unforgiving requirements of taking off and landing plane on an aircraft carrier in all types of weather day and night. The book very well covers the Spad pilots of the USS Ranger, the carrier LtJG Dengler flew off of and served on during his tour off Vietnam. As a retired Marine Corps officer I understand and appreciate the varying degrees of leadership and skills a military officer must serve with and under. The book shows that while there are mostly qualified and successful officers/pilots there are also some who are not that good at leading and sometimes lack in both skills and personality (I personally witnessed that a few times during my 25 years active service) and am thankfully they are few in number compared to the many selfless and dedicated officers who serve our country (same could be said about the enlisted ranks which I also had the privilege to serve among.)The book very well covers the loss of Dengler's A-1E Skyraider (Spad), his attempted evasion, capture, escape and recapture, his terrible treatment and his personal skills and determination which allowed him an opportunity to escape and evade again, until rescued by the grace of God and dedicated rescue service provided when possible. The book then covers Dengler's return to civilian life briefly and his love, loss and sad ending. It showed Dengler lived life to the fullest and bravely chose when to end it. This book is an amazing story and excellently portrays the life of a brave American. The author did a tremendous job in writing the book. There was no part in my mind that was not interesting. Also, I see where someone gave this book a one star rating because he had a paper book written in 1979 and didn't think this book could add anything. I disagree. First this book is offered electronically on Kindle which in itself is a benefit for those of us who enjoy reading off a Kindle and it is cheaper to purchase than a paperback. Secondly, this book may just offer a better written story and one more informational than the Escape from Laos book authored by Dengler. Just a thought. Whatever, I see no reason to downrate a book just because you have another book covering the story and most especially if you haven't even purchased this one.

I first encountered Dawn Eden in the early '00's when she wrote a blog called The Dawn Patrol. I was also blogging and I found her point of view interesting and her writing snappy, although at the time, her posts about her journey to Catholicism by way of Evangelical Christianity were less captivating. I remember even buying a book by G.K. Chesterton on the strength of her recommendation and being somewhat (very) nonplussed.Fast forward a couple or three years, and I found my interest in blogging had waned and my own conversion to Catholicism had its own literary patron, St. Augustine of Hippo. I had bought "The Thrill of the Chaste" and was happy to see Ms Goldstein's name crop up from time to time in my reading ("I knew her when...").I particularly like memoirs as a genre, so it seemed I had to buy "Sunday Will Never Be The Same", especially since I knew it would be written well. Ms Goldstein uses a "you are there" style to convey her history, and this technique works very well for pacing and the task of picking out the events, conversations, and emotions that, in retrospect, were important to the spiritual journey and to conversion. To be sure, this journey entailed great suffering. Her story is told with great courage, I think, and with palpable affection, and longing. There are very few people who convert to Christ as a result of seeking the truth explicitly, as St. Augustine did. The majority come to the truth as the way to make sense of (and thereby greatly alleviate) the pain that sin creates in our lives. Conversion doesn't cover up or distract us from our pain, but the peace of Christ is real, and the hope that we formerly understood only as a survival instinct now has a transcendent object.I found myself drawn into her narrative, beautifully descriptive and honest, crying with her at points, and marveling at God's work for her and through her. This is a powerful book, and Ms. Goldstein's indomitable spirit is written on every page.

The book is structured with the retro vibe of a mix-tape, as each chapter begins with a song title written on the label of a cassette. Goldstein’s memories of the music scene are vivid, and it’s enlightening to read about her unique encounters with artists like Robyn Hitchcock and Del Shannon. But the best part is always how she relays her inner thoughts as each episode unfolds. The book possesses considerable literary merit. Not only does it foster empathy through a direct sharing of the vulnerabilities of a human soul, it also artfully considers the delicate beauty of music as akin to the way love works in life.

Absolutely loved this book! The author takes the reader on her personal journey through the 1990’s music scene in Greenwich Village to her discovery of Catholicism. Personally I loved how she allowed the reader to feel what she was feeling! The book reads like a diary while keeping you captivated until the very end!

I loved Dawn’s writing style; I was hooked from the beginning! She very gently tells her story in all it’s sadness and craziness, but also with much humor. I was fascinated by all her associations with so many famous, and not so famous artists. I also appreciated her journey with God and coming into the Catholic Church.
