The primary reason I bought this book was the Supreme Court's decision on the Citizen's United case. This overruled federal legislation that limited corporate spending on political campaign messages. When I heard that the Supreme Court had decided that the First Amendment's protection of free speech applied to corporations as well as individuals I felt something had to be wrong. I felt that there were no corporations at the time the Bill of Rights was written so how could they have provided such a protection etc. Mr. Abrams was the attorney who represented Citizens United who challenged the law. He has a long history of important First Amendment cases going back to the Pentagon Papers in the 1970s. He has a history of always being on the "right side" of these cases. How could he have gone so wrong?He persuaded me, against my personal bias, that what the First Amendment protects is political speech - whether it is exercised by individuals or corporations. He pointed out that the majority opinion by Justice Kennedy cited 25 other Supreme Court cases in which corporations had been provided this protection. Of course many of those corporations were newspapers and the First Amendment specifically includes freedom of the press. However other corporations have also been protected.Abrams also warns of the potential dangers of allowing Congress and/or state legislatures to decide which speech should be limited or banned. (I of course recommend you read the more complete and expert explanations of this issue in the book).The book consists of copies of Mr. Abrams' speeches, newspaper and magazine articles, transcripts of media interviews and debates etc. Many other First Amendment cases are discussed including the Pentagon Papers case. Discussions of Wikileaks and the Internet are also timely and thought provoking.I won't say this is a "page turner." I had to read several of his sentences more than once and stop and think about his opinions and reasoning. Usually 20 to 30 pages was enough for one day. However there is humor included and the effort to understand this material is worthwhile. While Abrams is generally considered a liberal he strongly hits back at the liberals who attacked the Citizens United decision. I found many of these comments entertaining. I highly recommend the book and I expect not all who read it will be as convinced by his arguments as I was.

This is an excellent compilation from one of the foremost First Amendment lawyers of the past half century. Mr. Abrams brings a common sense approach to exceedingly complex topics that should be readable and enjoyable to lawyers and interested laypersons alike. Even if you disagree with some of his sentiments on various issues, the brilliance of Abrams is that he makes you think twice (if not several times over) about your own views and assumptions. I suppose that's what makes him a great lawyer. Normally, advocates with Abrams' pedigree and prominence tend to come off as combative and condescending to those who disagree with them.As an example, I found his chapter entitled "Freedom In Especially Perilous Times" particularly thought-provoking. Here he discusses Lincoln's repeated and wide-ranging "frontal attacks" on civil liberties during the Civil War and his own doubts about his condemnation of such "incursions" into our basic human rights in times when our country's security is threatened:"There was reason, good reason, for the gravest concern about the very survival of our nation. And in such times, it is difficult not to wonder about just which actions we really do condemn in our bones -- what it is, that is, that we think he should have done."

Abrams is an outstanding legal scholar with an amazing depth regarding this invaluable amendment. His focus is primarily related to the freedoms of speech and press, but he does include comments regarding freedom of religion and assembly. He uses his previous writings regarding cases and issues, but introduces their context. The book is understandable for the well informed lay person, but it takes concentration. It should be read in small doses over time; reflection by the reader is needed to integrate the concepts discussed.

The cases seem to live as he writes about them. Although it is a serious topic, the details presented allow the reader to feel like an insider and thus to understand the case more completely.

I know Floyd Abrams is a proponent of freedom of speech, but there is such a thing as too much of a (good) thing!

I am trying really, really hard to like this cookbook, but unfortunately, some of the results I've gotten from the recipes isn't backing up that desire. The photography in the book is fabulous and really makes you want to make the recipes. The recipes when read seem to be easy, doable and tasty. The suggested platings and finishing touches are inventive and easy to do. But, so far, every recipe I've made has had issues. The recipes are pretty well written and the instructions clear, so there is no confusion about how to make them. Pineapple Upside Down Cake? Pineapples were fabulous, the cake portion, not so much. I will use the pineapple preparation in the future but with a different cake batter. Arroz con Leche? Flavor profile is right on and perfect but the final product was awfully tight. I ended up adding more milk to get it thinned down to the proper consistency. The caramel for flan was delicious. Yields are also not exactly what is reflected in the recipe (so far my yields have all been greater than stated)I bought this cookbook specifically because I like latin flavors and there are very few cookbooks specifically about latin desserts. The flavor profiles in the recipes in Dulce accurately reflect those found in Mexico and other parts of Latin America (tho' they are mostly Mexican). Given the results I've gotten, I'm not sure this would be an appropriate cookbook for someone with little pastry or dessert experience, or for someone without some knowlege of what these desserts should taste like. But for someone with a little bit of skill with pastry or dessert, this cookbook would be a nice addition.I will keep cooking from it because I like the flavors I'm getting from the recipes, but I will probably have to tweak the recipes to get them to work for me.

I saw this book in a store, but did not want to pay full price for it. Found it here on amazon for an incredible savings used in perfect condition. This is the best latin dessert cookbook . Beautiful photographs and recipes that are not too complicated and very authentic. Having lived in Miami for 26 years i was enveloped into many different latin cultures. You have Cuban, Mexican, Argentina,Puerto rican, Haitian, Honduran just to name a few.Each group with their own special desserts. This book was able to incorporate many of those desserts into the book. It goes way above the standard flan and tres leche cake recipes normally found in a latin cookbook.I have about every latin cookbook ever written. This book i see fast becoming my favorite.

I am a little ambivalent about this book. My sweet tooth is legendary among my friends and family, as is my love of desserts. To me, a meal is what you have to work your way through to get to the important stuff. This book should have been a perfect fit for me.I have cookbooks I have collected when traveling in Latin America and have a repertoire of tried and true recipes of traditional Latin American desserts, which I serve and enjoy regularly. This book is only nominally "Latin American" it is really mostly a Mexican with a sprinkle of other nationalities. (Including Spain--the "Churros" on the cover are a Spanish tradition on cold days and nights). The desserts, despite the subtitle, are not traditional, they are inspired on tradition but many (most) have a nouvelle cuisine twist to them.DULCE has different versions of many of the recipes I'm familiar with and of many desserts I've tasted. A side-by-side comparison of many of the book's recipes with my own shows some differences. (In many cases, I think I like mine better, but maybe his are tailored for restaurant-style production and mine are more for home). For example, the Guatemalan classic dessert, Tres Leches, did not originally have rum and was covered in meringue instead of whipped cream. (Whipped cream is the quickie version).I find his recipes interesting, some even tempting, but I'm a little disappointed that I didn't find anything that I'm just dying to try. Which surprises me because I have dined memorably at both restaurants in which he has worked (China Grill and Patria) and you would think something would grab me.Part of the reason might be the layout of the book. There are random clusters of pages of color photographs throughout the book, but not for every recipe and usually not anywhere near the page with the recipe. As with all Rizzoli books, the photography is gorgeous. But unlike the norm, the editing and organization are not. Take "Alfajores" for example. If you look in the index for it, you are referred to a page in which the cookie is called "Dulce de Leche-filled Butter Cookie Sandwiches." The photograph of the cookie appears more than 50 pages later. I find this awkward. Passion fruit is only translated as "maracuya," not "parcha" or "parchita" which varies by country.On the plus side, he does give sources for difficult to find ingredients, which will come in handy for "Pan de Bono" which I love but have never made, and didn't have another recipe for. In addition, he provides many non-traditional variations to the basic desserts, such as the flans and some totally original desserts that never would have occurred to me, such as Quinoa Pudding, as well as deviations from tradition such as Goat Cheese and Guava Empanadas.So, as you see, I'm torn. There is much to recommend it, but....

Some of the recipes need work but there are also lots of solid recipes and flavors here especially for professional pastry chefs looking for Latin based dessert ideas. One of my favorite recipes is the chocolate croquette which I've used in so many different ways!

I'm from Puerto Rico and ordered this lured to the sound of latin-american treats, however, I think it is mostly mexican desserts. The recipes seemed good but it wasn't really what I was looking for.

This is not a serious history. It contains extensive narrative fill based on speculation and extrapolation, which borders on romantic wish fulfillment. Describing prehistoric Byblos: "Life was good in this rustic, fruitful land." He treats primary sources as unmitigated fact. Most egregiously, the Bible text is treated as unvarnished truth instead of a rich trove of comparative evidence within a pseudo-historic cultural polemic. This is okay if you are a believer, but the evidence of the Bible must be weighed against other scientific and historical evidence. Long passages from the Bible and other primary texts are inserted without interpolation. If you want a serious short history that deals with the modern scientific and historical scholarship on the Phoenicians, I suggest you get A Short History of The Phoenicians "A Short History of The Phoenicians (I.B. Tauris Short Histories)" by the known Phoenician scholar Mark Woolmer, published in 2017.

Excellent book, fascinating. It suggests answers to so many questions about ancient peoples in the Mediterranian. Who were the Minoans? What happened to them? Where did they come from? Where did our alphabet come from? Who were the "Sea peoples"? What is a Minotaur? Where did Carthage come from? Where was Atlantis? Who were the Amazons? Who were the Trojans? Where did King Solomon get his wealth?The book suggests answers to many other questions in a well written and documented format. Does the book answer definitely answer all the above questions? No, however, it pulls together scattered pieces of a puzzle to form a more complete picture. There may be pieces that we will never find, but with this book, we get a more complete picture of history.

Being a history buff,I particularly enjoyed the development of the Lebanese/ Phoenician trading empire over 3000 years and without an army. The authors writing style is informal but correct which I much prefer over the dry didactic research papers of historians that turn many people away from history. His writing style reminds me of Samuel Eliot Morison, high praise indeed.

This is a whole book of stuff I knew nothing about. That's not terribly rare, but this is stuff I thought I knew a least a little bit. It's a fascinating read about a remarkable civilization. We could learn a lot from the Phoenicians.

I have been reading book after book to learn more about the history of the ancient Mediterranean. After many books and half a dozen "The Great Courses" videos, I have come across "Phoenician Secrets". Thanks to Sanford Holst for authoring this well written story of the Phoenicians that addresses the ancient history of the Mediterranean so comprehensively. I had not realized that Sicily had such a Greek heritage (as well as Phoenician) until I visited Syracuse and quite a bit of the countryside from there to Punta Secca. I also spent a short time in Naxos and Palermo. It was what I saw, heard, and learned that stimulated my interest in Mediterranean history.This book helped give me an understandable perspective on Sicilian history. I hope to be able to return for a three week (or more) visit to learn more about how the Phoenicians, the Carthaginians and the Greeks influenced this beautiful island. The ruins I saw in Cartagena, Spain even make more sense now. And what I learned on Santorini about Akrotiri make me want to visit Knossos after reading Chapter 10 about Minoan culture.This is an understandable and easy to read book that really helped my quest to better understand ancient Mediterranean history.

This was a Mediterranean culture I knew nothing about. They were the great traders but very secretive and "tribal". But also wealthy and far more civilized than all their neighbors! We could learn a lot from this ancient culture!

Very good book as there are not many accurate books documenting the history of the Phoenicians. I think this goes well beyond its description as it details with time lines a lot of information concerning the way of life as the historical Phoenicians

Since lean is very contextual when it comes to implementation, I was delighted to find much detail on precisely how lean was applied at Clay Bottom Farm. Ben effectively describes both the overarching strategies and the specific tactics that were applied over the years. These will help spark lean deployment ideas at other farms for sure.I started to get a bit concerned when the discussion of cost cutting surfaced since lean is NOT another management driven cost cutting program. But Ben effectively addressed my concerns by adding his thoughts on this in "Lean Overreached" and "Lean for More Than Profit." I have seen lean reduced to just cost cutting which resulted in bad, long-term business consequences. As Ben explains, lean is a complete culture change where "respect for people" is paramount and where daily and long-term continuous improvement is knitted into the very fabric of the organization.Excellent book. He even discusses many of the caveats that would naturally occur to a small farmer trying to adopt lean, such as letting your values influence how you implement the concept so that you achieve greater sustainability as well as profitability.The Lean Farm is a great read and well worth adding to your farming library. Although it has many interesting glimpses into the author's farming practices, this book does not attempt to be an introduction to farming. Overall I thought it was a good book, what I felt stopped it from being a 5 star review, is I didn't feel it was great throughout the entire book. The information on the 5S highly valuable, the case studies were good, though I would have like to have seen more on farm examples of perhaps other market farms instead of dairy farm from Denmark. Also the last part chapter 12 - on mega farms, is kinda like preaching to the choir. You figure most folks who get this book are typically going to be either market farmers, or small animal producers.I'd say it was worth the money, there were valuable examples that we'll put into use on our farm.

I bought this book as a gift but after reading it, I decided not to make it a gift. The pictures are lovely but the message/storyline is a bit muddled and does not become clear until the end. In my opinion, this is not a "bedtime" book as it will need some explaining.

This book is incredible—short, accessible, inspiring, thoroughly cited, and eminently quotable. I read a library copy in three days and, since I couldn't mark it up, I ended up using sticky tabs everywhere. About halfway through I decided I needed to own this book. There are SO many quotes and references to a whole world of literature on lectio divina, especially from the early church fathers and medieval period. You will also be introduced to a number of medieval characters you've probably never heard of before. Magrassi is a beautiful writer in his own right. However, the book as a whole is like a skillfully arranged mosaic—the patristic and medieval quotes are seamlessly integrated into Magrassi's own writing, style, and thought.The book functions on two levels. First, it is a quick-moving yet impressive introduction to lectio divina. Second, it is a sustained argument for the rediscovery and practice of lectio divina today. In Magrassi's mind, piety and exegesis have been wrongly cleft. Our pride swells because of the advent of scientific methods applied with analytical rigor while our spiritual bellies swell because of malnutrition and starvation. Magrassi shows us how differently the church approached Scripture before the advent of scholasticism—as a source of living water, a kiss of eternity, a living Book, the saving power of God, an inexhaustible mystery, a mystical container of Christ. The connection between reading and prayer is stressed throughout, as is the indispensability of a deep, experiential encounter with the living, person of Christ as we appropriate the sacred text.This book is not intended to function as a step-by-step "field guide" to prayed reading. Rather, it sets forth the richness of the historical tradition, the key ideas and the concrete dispositions employed, and ends with a terse summary of the four acts of lectio divina. The tone Magrassi writes with may be called "impassioned academic."I completely disagree with the 2 star review by N Pemberton below. I didn't find anything confusing about this book. The only way I could see that being the case is if you have never read a semi-scholarly Christian book. But even if you are only familiar with the style of C. S. Lewis, that would easily prepare you for this book.I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to deepen their experience of reading Scripture.

This is a great piece on a difficult subject. I would not suggest this for anyone new to the faith unless they have a teach going through it with them. I got this one for my Spiritual Formation class. The language and ideas (from Christians throughout the ages) can be somewhat hard to follow, but that's only to be expected with lectio divina. However, the act of praying Scripture is something very important and meaningful that goes well beyond normal "Bible study." I highly recommend this book for anyone looking to deepen their faith.

After one reads Guigo on the practical discipline, this is the finest work I've ever found, giving a rich and packed historical theology of the Christian experience of reading, meditating and praying Holy Scripture. Highly, highly recommended and rooted in a sound theology of the written Word.

This is a really excellent book introducing Lectio Divina, and an enjoyable read. The author make an excellent case for praying the bible -- the ancient art of lectio divina. I gave the book a four star rating because it does not have as many of the "helps" other books on the topic have. However it will get you started with lectio divina, and should help you approach the discipline with the right attitude.The author focuses a lot on inspiration. The same Spirit that inspired the Biblical writers, also inspires the text as we read it, and continues to inspire it as He applies it to our lives. Magrassi helps you expect God to work in you, as you contemplatively read and pray the scriptures.This book has a wealth of quotes from the contemplative tradition spanning the history of the Church. I'd buy the book for the quotes, alone! There are also good footnotes for all the citations. Sometimes it is as if the saints from the past were writing the book; Magrassi weaves the quotes so well into his message.Mariano Magrassi is a Catholic Archbishop, but this book is theologically neutral. As a Protestant, I found the book easy to receive. I would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone.To summarize from the book, quoting Smaragdus:"Reading enables us to learn what we do not know, meditation enables us to retain what we have learned, and prayer enables us to live what we have retained. Reading Sacred Scripture confers on us two gifts: it makes the soul's understanding keener, and after snatching us from the world's vanities, it leads us to the love of God" (p. 20)

I have created the coloring designs to be intricate and detailed but still fun and accessible. There is something for lovers of meditative detail while simple enough to not be overwhelming for younger colorists.When designing my books I decided to print them with two copies of each design, because I know as an artist there are always so many possibilities! I wanted to give everybody the chance of a do-over with every design, because I also know mistakes can happen, and even the fear of mistakes can hamper creativity. I have most of Selina Fenech's coloring books and grayscale coloring books and I always enjoy her design style. “Goddess and Mythology” is another fantastic book in her series. In this coloring book, there are 25 designs which is great as-is; however, as usual for Ms. Fenech, she gives us two copies of each design. That provides 50 coloring opportunities in this book. It gives me the option of coloring designs two different ways or to share a copy with someone. Either way, it's a good thing.The designs have many details but are not intricate or with tiny elements to color for the most part. There are a couple of nudes with very strategically placed elements so that nothing is showing. I've been playing with shading and have tried adding an element of clothing transparency to some of my more recent projects but that is my design choice rather than anything in the coloring book.While the designs are printed on one side of the page, on the page opposite each design (backside of previous design page) and in light gray print, Ms. Fenech has provided the name of each individual. Along with the name, she has given us a short blurb on the history of the mythology/goddess. I found that extremely helpful as some of these stories were new to me. As I am coloring, I can always look up the name and get a more in-depth explanation but, for the most part, the amount of information provided in the book is sufficient for me.The designs are based on stories from around the world – from Greek and Roman mythology to that of the Vikings to the Far East, from Africa to England. These are the designs that are included in the book: Valkyrie, Blodeuwedd, Diana, The Lady of the Lake, Arianrhod, Aphrodite, Antheia, Athena, Cerridwen, Coventina, Fidelma, Gaia, 2 Wiccan representations, Ishtar, Isis, Nuwa, Selene, Parvati and Shiva, Tempestas, Echo, Guanyin, The Triple Goddess, Oshun, and Rhiannon,This is what I experienced while coloring in this book and testing the paper with my coloring medium. I will list, in the comments section below, the coloring mediums I test with and generally use for coloring my projects. For this book, I especially like using alcohol-based markers with colored pencil for shading and depth.25 x 2 each Goddess and Mythology Designs (50 coloring pages)Printed on one side of pagePaper is white, thin, slightly rough and non-perforatedDesigns do not merge into the binding and there is plenty of room to cut out pages if you choose to do so. Most designs have a framing line around the outer edgeGlue BindingAlcohol and water-based markers bleed through the paper to some degrees. Alcohol markers bleed through quickly while water-based bleeds through in spots.Gel pens and India ink pens leave colorful shadows on back of the page. India ink can bleed through if you apply multiple coats.Coloring Pencils work well with this paper. It has enough tooth to get good pigment (especially with repeated layers), layer and blend easily as well. Both wax and oil based pencils worked well with the paper. Hard lead pencils can leave dents through the page.I use and I recommend that you use a blotter page below your work regardless of which medium you use so that ink or dents don't mar the rest of the book. I like card stock of several sheets of heavyweight paper for this purpose.

The spine is glue bound, and quite pliable after some use. The paper is of moderate thickness and texture. A number of layers are easily achieved on the paper, with both oil and wax based pencils. Waterbased markers shadow, any other wet media will bleed. Make sure to have a few pages of standard paper behind the image to catch any bleedthrough.Images are single sided, and surrounded by a border to prevent the image from entering the spine. The facing page has the name of the image for easy reference to the original. This book contains , 25 different images, each one repeated, for a total of 50 images.ImagesI have wanted a colouring book with mythological imagery ever since I began colouring - and this one fits the bill.Selinas style is very consistent, with a delicate, traditional fantasy style that lends itself beautifully to colouring pages. These are no exception, with each image having been either converted from original artwork or drawn for the purpose of this book.One very handy feature is a short paragraph about the Goddess being pictures underneath the name on the facing page. Goddess and Mythology is my third coloring book by Selina Fenech. Her books have thus far surpassed my expectations each time. Previously I had purchased Marty Noble's Goddess coloring book and was very disappointed with the book because it lacked a more "close up " view , as well as expressions on the faces.That is not a problem here with the 25 Goddesses portrayed in this book. Each Goddess' face portrays a different expression and, it's easy to see the details in each design . Making for a much more enjoyable coloring experience.The 25 Goddesses included are:- 1 Norse- 1 Arthurian- 1 Roman-British- 1 Babylonian- 1 Egyptian- 1 Ancient Chinese- 1 Hindu- 1 East Asian- 1 African Yoruba- 2 Roman- 2 Irish- 2 Wicca- 4 Welsh- 6 Greek Both the Hindu and Wicca are depicted with their male God counterpart.~Each page is a full page design only on one page. The back bottom of the page (left hand side) has the name and origin of the Goddess depicted on the right. In light gray ink.~ The duplicate pages are given in a second book like format. I like this way compared to giving you a duplicate right after the first design.~ the pages are non-perforated. They aren't thin enough for gel pens to go through all the way but some will leave a shadow. Markers and fineliners will bleed through heavily.*Tip I found that using a piece of cardboard from a calendar cover with a piece of heavyweight construction paper works well at protecting pages from bleeding media.~ I like how the author takes the time to explain why she includes two copies of each design , rather than leaving the customer guessing.I would highly recommend this book to others.
