This guide is well done but lacks some practical tools. The guide is well organized. Texas is broken down by region and color coded with a table of contents for each regional section. The index goes to six pages and you can find most sites through the index but the guide is so well laid out it is not necessary to consult the index for sites. The photography in the guide is all in color and spectacular in most cases but some of the photos seem like the ones you would leave out in selecting the ones to keep from a vacation trip. The essays that accompany each park and site are excellent. They cover a wide variety of interesting aspects regarding each site, touching on everything from geology to natural history. The more significant parks get special treatment in the essays. There is a small map square attached to each park page that locates the site with a star and the nearest small towns and state roads. The practical information regarding each park is presented at the end of each essay in a brief format. You have to read the user guide at the front of the book to get full benefit of these descriptions.Practically, you are still going to need a road atlas to locate any of these parks/sites unless you know Texas. There are no distance tables provided and no direction descriptions in the text. The information briefs regarding the parks are bare bones and cover only the most essential items. I wanted a little more from the guide in terms of general information on the park itself and perhaps some photos of the camping, hiking, river running areas. Most of the experiential information regarding the parks seemed like something you could get off the park web sites, which are excellent sources. It's a twenty dollar book and it seems lacking in terms of travel directions and any practical expanded park specific information. But the photos and essays are lovely. As one reviewer notes on the back cover of the book, it's a guide that works well as a coffee table book.

This is a beautiful and useful book. There's an overview of the history and highlights of each and every Texas State Park, along with wonderful photography. I learned a lot from this book, even about parks I thought I knew well. I recommend this book for keeping at home to review and get inspired for a Texas road trip. This is not a book to carry along on a road trip--it's too big and heavy for that--but this book helps with planning and inspiration.

This wasn't what I was looking for. It's more of a coffee table book than a guide. It has nice photos and narrative descriptions of the park, but I was expecting more practical details.

A beautiful book with nice, thick pages, beautiful pictures, and many state parks. Features some I've never heard of and definitely some I hope to visit. Very detailed. Makes a great gift, but be sure to get one for yourself, too.

Bought several books to prepare for moving to Texas and thus is our favorite, well organized, I like the regional maps so you can see which parks are close together.

I bought this book together with a whole bunch of books on State Parks, figuring it would help me distinguish the *real* places I was looking for to escape the city and find some weekend rest where I could picnic and let my 1-year old toddler wander about. Most park books are printed in only a few colors or shades and to that extent, I found in this guide a much richer approach. Out of the approximately 5 books I purchased, this is one of the two I actually use to find myself around. A good complement to this is "Camper's Guide to Texas Parks, Lakes, and Forests"

Very good information for anyone interested in visiting Texas State parks and historical sites. Good descriptions of the attractions and amenities available. The book also gives interesting background on the parks and sites and includes good photography.

I did receive this book, but it is a gift, I haven't read it!

From Publishers Weekly

If you thought McDonald's and strip malls were the ugliest of America's cultural exports, think again. Western ideas about mental illness-from anorexia to post-traumatic stress disorder, schizophrenia, general anxiety and clinical depression-as well as Western treatments have been sweeping the globe with alarming speed, argues journalist Watters (Urban Tribes), and are doing far more damage than Big Macs and the Gap. In this well-traveled, deeply reported book, Watters takes readers from Hong Kong to Zanzibar, to Tsunami ravaged Sri Lanka, to illustrate how distinctly American psychological disorders have played in far-off locales, and how Western treatments, from experimental, unproven drugs to talk therapy, have clashed with local customs, understandings and religions. While the book emphasizes anthropological findings at the occasional expense of medical context, and at times skitters into a broad indictment of drug companies and Western science, Watters builds a powerful case. He argues convincingly that cultural differences belie any sort of western template for diagnosing and treating mental illness, and that the rapid spread of American culture threatens our very understanding of the human mind: "We should worry about the loss of diversity in the world's differing conceptions of treatments for mental illness in the same way we worry about the loss of biodiversity in nature." From Booklist

During the last quarter-century, America’s cultural influence on foreign countries has become all too visible, with a McDonald’s opening on Tiananmen Square and remote African tribes sporting jeans and T-shirts. Perhaps less obvious, but no less worrisome, is the American exportation of mental illness documented in this unsettling expose by the coauthor of the recovered-memory critique, Making Monsters (1996). Watters emphasizes that different cultures have long had their idiosyncratic ways of handling stress that don’t necessarily conform to descriptions provided by the American Psychological Association (APA). Yet, because the APA’s treatment guidelines are increasingly being subscribed to and Western medicine’s recommended drugs prescribed by other countries’ health-care workers, such illnesses as anorexia and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are appearing in cultures previously unfamiliar with them. In making his case, Watters provides four carefully dissected case studies, those of anorexia in Hong Kong, PTSD in Sri Lanka, schizophrenia in Zanzibar, and depression in Japan. Ultimately, Watters argues, the loss of cultural diversity consequent upon this peculiar form of Americanization will be keenly felt. --Carl Hays

Ethan Watters is a journalist who writes particularly about mental health. The premise of this book is that American understandings about the mind and the self, particularly ideas about mental illness and treatment, are being aggressively promoted and replacing traditional beliefs and practices in nonwestern societies. You might think this is a good thing, a sign of progress or modernization, if you believe Americans know more than the rest of the world about mental health. Watters clearly does not. He is of the opinion that psychiatry is culture-bound: that each society has developed its own idioms of distress and culturally meaningful forms of treatment, and Western psychiatry is rapidly destroying them. The American narrative of the moment is a particularly banal one that thoughts and feelings are just a batch of chemicals that psychiatrists can alter with drug therapy. Watters is well-read on the subject, and he has gone around the world to talk to researchers who are questioning the Western narrative. He has written an exceptionally clear, engaging, and persuasive book. As a psychological anthropologist trained in psychiatry, there is little here that I did not learn as a student thirty years ago, but this is the first book I would recommend to anyone who wants to explore the relationship between psychology and culture. It clearly challenges the prevailing premise of universalism, that the psychology and psychiatry of people everywhere is essentially the same and that culture is largely irrelevant.

Ethan Watters, an American journalist explores in his book Crazy Like Us, the globalization of American based mental illnesses such as anorexia, schizophrenia, PTSD, etc. In his book he explores four different types of illnesses and allows the reader to see just how much impact the American definitions and symptoms of these mental illnesses have had on other societies. He is able to keep his readers captivated by incorporating the stories of people who are inflicted with this disorder. He also allows the reader to see how the disorder progressed from having a cultural specific identity to being manipulated into an entirely new being. One of his first examples is that of anorexia in China, at first the reason behind the disorder was completely different from our own, that was until it became exposed to the population.Which is where Watters introduces the concept of western technology and science. In his book he stakes the claim that because of the advanced science and technology possessed by the United States, leads to less economically stable countries to embrace ideas that are foreign to them without thinking how it will affect their cultural background. He proves this point several times in the book, whether it be the United States influencing the introduction of a mental illness to another country, or the use of data collected in the United States in order to push a new SSRI.Watter’s takes a topic that is what some would call near and dear to individuals of the United States, as mental illness is becoming a more prominent issues, and showing how it is negatively affecting societies that have not been introduced to these ideas. Meaning that no these societies quite possible did have these disorders in their society but before the globalization of their symptoms and definitions they had an entirely different meaning. They became something new instead of what they had always been. The reader sees then when reading chapter three of schizophrenics in Africa, the disorder was always there just never given a name or symptoms addressed to it. Instead it was just a burden to bare from God. Which is where the reader gets to see how the society accepts and treats the disorder.Watters book is very well constructed and easy to lose oneself in because of the stories he tells of others, and does not bog down the reading with countless studies done, or scholarly information that takes away from the meaning. If one is interested in anthropology, and medical studies this is definitely a book to read. It not only touches base with American culture, but several other cultures, and also gives the reader a taste of the medical aspects of the world. It also allows the reader to see a more in depth view of medical companies and how sometimes these companies are not out for the betterment of individuals; they are out for the betterment of their wallets. Watters took a unique topic and allowed the individuals stories speak for themselves on how globalization has left a devastating footprint on numerous societies; a footprint that some individuals may not be able to recover from.

Splendid read. Hugely insightful, providing insight to the cautions we should exercise in applying Western DSM diagnoses and treatments as a cookie cutter cure to global mental health issues. Kudos to the author for some serious investigative reporting and analysis. This should be in the libraries of every mental health practitioner worthy of his/her salt.

This is undoubtedly one of the finest books I’ve ever read about grief, and trust me, I’ve read dozens of them. Tom Zuba speaks with the authentic voice of one who knows first-hand the experience of unspeakable loss, not only as a twice-bereaved parent but as a surviving spouse as well. His words are simple but eloquent, and thus very easy to read and to comprehend ~ which is important to those in the early throes of grief, who may find it difficult to concentrate. I was able to read the entire book in one sitting ~ mainly because once started, I couldn’t put it down. The content is clinically accurate and reliable, in that it reflects the most current research and thinking of noted experts in the field of grief and loss. What is more, it is delivered in a manner that is filled with hope, wisdom and love. I will not hesitate to recommend it highly to clients and colleagues. If you know someone who is grieving, I cannot think of a more thoughtful gift than this beautiful book.

My son died of a heroin overdose in May of 2016. This book was originally given to me by my sister the day of Neil's memorial. It took almost a month to gather the courage to even open the book but once I started I couldn't put it down until I finished it. It is easy to read and well written so that you can read and digest the information a little at a time. It had such a healing effect on me that I have made a ministry of giving copies away to anyone I meet that is fighting to survive the death of a loved one. I highly recommend it to everyone.

He said a lot of things I already knew, but I needed someone to tell me that had the experience so that I know that he is right, and that he is strong enough to emphatically get that across to me. It isn't long, but I read it all in one sitting very late one night and was not planning to do so. I could not put it down. Yes, I cried. Like I knew, he tells you that you must. Believe him. He has suffered like not many of us have, thank goodness, so he knows and he came out alive and whole. We can too.

This is one of the best books I have read on grieving and I have read many. I cried through a lot of the book BECAUSE Tom was speaking directly to me. So much of my short journey is just like Tom talked about in his book. I will re read this and hopefully I can practice some of his suggestions.

I haven't read this book. But I purchased it for my mom following the recent loss of my beloved stepfather. I picked it based on all the positive reviews I saw on Amazon, and I'm so happy to report that those glowing reviews are echoed in her praise. My mother has read it three times, cover to cover and hasn't stopped thanking me for the gift. She quotes it constantly and in many ways it's been her most important support line through the chaos swirling inside. This is not a book for saps. Based on my mother's experience as a morning reader, I can wholeheartedly recommend this to anyone suffering from the most profound loss of a loved one. If you are one of those people, so sorry for your loss. I hope the book speaks to you.

After the untimely death of my beloved daughter I received many books about grief from friends, I bought some myself, but found I couldn't get past more than a page or two in any of them. My grief was too overwhelming to concentrate on all the well-meaning, and I'm sure, well-written books. Then I was told to find Tom Zuba's book, "Permission to Mourn". Thankfully, I did procure it, and it still is the only book that I could read. It is thoughtful, compassionate, understanding, knowledgeable, loving, kind, and absolutely right on! Tom has walked the walk, and easily imparted what I needed to hear in a very concise manner. The book is easy to read, and can be completed in an hour or two. I cannot recommend this book more highly. If you have lost a loved one, please read this book.

As someone who is three and a half years on the grief journey after the passing of my 26 y.o. daughter, I found this book to provide encouragement and direction that so many who are grieving need. I read it in one sitting (including time for a few tears). The author discusses the need to go through the grief at your own pace, and the need to make conscious decisions on some emotionally difficult things. It feels very personal because the author shares so much of himself in it. It is beautifully written. I would recommend it for anyone who is grieving. It is a book that I will be giving to others who are grieving after a “loss.”

Not being new to grief by any means but new as a widow, Tom's words resonated enough that I opted to do my first 'class' with him December 2017. Did several in 2018 and am scheduled for upcoming class of 2019. Over the last 14 months, I've learned that there's great benefit to being with ones who understand sorrow, who aren't going to shrug their shoulders because I'm not 'over M. and moved on' yet. Tom is a facilitator who truly knows and understands what it's like to lose not only his spouse but a daughter and son as well. His style of writing is different, but sometimes, that's what is needed! Bravo to him for exposing his pain and journey to help others! May God bless Tom!

There are two books by this aithor. I bought this one. It really should be one book or a combined set. It is hard to review the book because oddly enough for such an important railroad there is very little available.I think the price could be a little lower allowing for the purchase of both books but althought you may not be delighted you won't be disappointed. The book is well written with a nice amount of photos. It is a good book. Someday this might nit be as good a book but until someone publishs a better work about the LIRR I doubt you will find anything better

If you have a model railroad of the LIRR of this era, this little book is most helpful.

Good read.

great presentation of the oldest continuously operating passenger railroad in USA. I recommend this book to all who love trains.

very informative

Really liked this book. Brought back memories about riding on the LIRR in the 50's & 60's.
