This book was recommended to me by my babalawo. I was struggling with learning the religion and felt like I wasn't exposed to it often enough to learn its concepts and ideas. Merely going for readings wasn't enough to satisfy my desire to learn more. My spirit yearned to be drawn in closer so I decided to read altar of my soul. Following Marta through her journey was powerful. It gave a personal insight of the different phases of your spiritual discovery and more so that of the journey of discovering the Orishas. It gave a very simple breakdown of the different practices and customs of Santeria. The read was so much more fluid than the technical books of Yoruba that uses jargon you can barely interpret if you are not a babalawo or santero/a. I def recommend the read.

I hesitated buying this book after reading some of the other reviews. We all know there is a lot of bunk out there about the religion and that even some of the better books don't always live up to expectations or do the religion justice. But this book, in my personal opinion, is one of the best books about the religion I have read.At first I wasn't sure I liked the way Vega organized the book. Each chapter introduces you to an aspect of the religion and then a snippet of her personal journey from childhood into the religion and beyond. But I became okay with that after a while, even though I struggled sometimes to make the connection between the topic and where it connected to her story.Each of us in the religion have our own path that brought us here. I enjoy hearing about others' paths. No two are the same and I find them all fascinating. I liked reading her story. I like her, and I have a lot of admiration for her work in the religion.I thought the information she presented about the religion was accurate. And because that isn't always the case I rate that first and foremost when reading a new book about the religion. I'm not familiar with Candomble or other similar religions but what she presented about Santeria was accurate to my knowledge and experience with a few minor difference - and you will always have those.I like the patakis she chose to retell. They are, in my personal opinion, some of the best.I like feeling her love for the religion come through the pages. I love the devotees she allows us to meet through her narrative and their lifelong devotion to the religion. Imagine being initiated at 7 or 8!!This is not a book that lays out information about the religion like a text book. Instead, it is interwoven with her story. So in a sense you are learning about Santeria just as any of us do, and follow the path forward in the way we do. First you become aware, then you receive the elekes, the guerreros, Orunla, initiation, etc. So by using her own story to go step by step through the religion works for me. And I think she gives a good amount of introductory information about many aspects of the religion. We have to remember that this religion is not learned or practiced by reading. You have to experience it. And when you become involved or initiated on any level, you understand how so much of it is simply oral and experiential and that it will never ever be fully represented in a bood of any kind. To me, this is a great book and a great read for newcomers.

This book was recommended to me by a Santero as my interest in Santeria has recently been piqued.Whether or not you have an interest in The Religion, this is an excellent book.It moves slowly in the beginning, and sometimes, Moreno Vega's jumps from past to present can be confusing. However, this is a beautifully written story of Moreno Vega's life, and her journey in Santeria.If you are reading this book just to read an autobiography, it's a great book. There's no way, however, that you can read this book without becoming even slightly curious about Santeria!Definitely buy it and read it!

I followed Aaron Hernandez’s trial with great interest and can say with confidence that I have read and watched *everything* publicly available on the case. From trial transcripts to news articles to Shayanna Jenkins-Hernandez’s appearance on Dr. Phil to the special on Oxygen to even that horrid James Patterson novel that I tore apart in a review here on Amazon—I have consumed everything I can find. I read the book against that backdrop of information and concluded:1. This book is by far the best resource on the Hernandez case.Hernandez was so secretive and, amazingly enough, the family and friends who were closest to him (so, not his brother and mother) have remained mostly mum. As a result, there has not been any illumination of his thoughts and decisions and reasons. Unless Baez is wholesale fabricating most of the book (doubtful since he has Hernandez-Jenkins’s approval), he got very close to Aaron and became one of his few confidants. As a result, this book really sheds light on Hernandez in a way never seen before.2. This book answers controversial questions.From Hernandez’s sexuality to the full text of his suicide notes to the lifestyles of the Cape Verdeans he was accused of murdering, Baez touches on topics that were hitherto unaddressed or for which confusing accounts exist. Virtually any question that has been on answered until now is addressed in this book. Having had my time wasted by James Patterson’s account, I really appreciated that Baez made this read worthwhile.3. The book is respectful both to Hernandez and to the victims.Whenever I read that an attorney is going to write a tell-all book on his client, my instinctive reaction is disgust. I think I am in the majority on that. Baez took what could have been a very sleazy exercise and makes it feel almost like the kind of book Hernandez himself might have written had he been able to tell his own story. Baez is true to his loyalty to his client and his love of Hernandez humanizes Hernandez in a way I did not think possible. Out of nowhere, I found my heart breaking not only for the victims, but also for the loss of a young, talented man who fought his way up from poverty with sheer force of will and talent only to fall so far short of what he should have been. I did not expect to sympathize with Hernandez. I also found myself believing that the acquittal in the second trial was the right verdict. I did not expect that. At the same time, Baez is fair to the victims. Such balance is not easy to achieve.4. This is book gives insight into Baez and is an excellent primer in how to try a criminal case.I picked up this book as much to learn about Jose Baez as to deepen my understanding of Aaron Hernandez. As a fellow litigator, I have long been intrigued by Baez. Despite media depictions of him as what happens when a bumbling, oafish cretin is crossed with a money-grubbing ambulance-chaser who will defend anyone for a buck, the man keeps winning. And he’s winning really tough cases. Lay people think this is because he is lucky or because juries are stupid, but as a trial attorney, I know it takes considerable skill to prevail against the odds his clients face.This book told me why Baez keeps winning. He is a phenomenal attorney. Plain and simple. Anyone with an interest in the law MUST read this book. Baez really understands investigations, trial strategy, and advocacy, and he conveys the information in a very easy-to-read, conversational style. The man should consider holding lectures and seminars.5. There are many life lessons to be gleaned.Even if you are not a lawyer or a law junkie, this book is simply a fascinating case study in how pride goeth before a fall, youths are sacrificed on the altar of football, and lives can be derailed by keeping the wrong company. Hernandez’s story is a true Greek tragedy. An unexpected lesson is the fact that everything we think we know about a case from media coverage can be so wrong.

Mrs. Andre here. Still crying after reading this. He didn't have to die this way. Much evidence points to his innocence and I am appalled and disgusted by corrupt law enforcement. How DARE they trying link him and only him to these crimes? The Patriots are disgusting too. They turned their back on him without giving him any benefit of the doubt. I'm glad he's at peace. The truth about CTE must not be concealed. I feel like Baez will fight for Aaron and all future players against the NFL. They can't continue to lie.

Báez is coming for everyone and we should all be here for it! 👏👏👏 After the James Patterson book proved to be as insightful as a poop-emoji essay, I had some reservations about another AH book. Hernandez never spoke to the media about any of his legal issues, he did not make any statements through his agent or lawyer, and did not grant any sit-down interviews about any part of his ordeal, which means wanting to report on him is going to limit you to either summarizing previously published think-pieces or interviewing someone's uncle’s co-worker's nephew's former neighbor — who once saw AH holding a footbal at Briston Central High School— in order to get some “insight’ into what happened. Watching AH's interaction in court w/ this legal team was priceless and this book does a great job of adding all the "behind the scenes."This book is a page-turner!

I started reading this book believing Aaron Hernandez was guilty. I’m from Boston and a huge Pats fan so the last thing I wanted to believe was that Aaron was capable of this but everything I heard on the news pointed to his guilt. I was one of the many people who believed Aaron got annoyed over a spilled drink so he shot and killed 2 people - I assumed he was some lucky punk who felt untouchable but I’ve changed my mind.I couldn’t put this book down! Jose Baez really broke the case down and explained everything so well. It’s unbelievable to me how the prosecution could put this man on trial with no real evidence. And I still can’t get over the street sweeper 😳What could have been such a beautiful life ended so tragically. Clearly Aaron Hernandez was in a lot of pain and is hopefully at peace now.

Not sure where to begin...I was able to complete this book in one day. Not because it was a short read, quite the opposite. I was so intrigued with every detail and word coming from Jose. I felt like I was there in the trial and shared the experiences with Aaron along with the lawyers. It was very engaging. So many facts that were shared that I wasn't aware of. Born and raised in Florida, we KNOW who's who for football. Aaron was "that" guy! Such an enormous talent. We can't go back in time, but I honestly believe if Jose Baez would have taken on the first trial, Aaron and Shayanna would have had the life that was expected. For those who have NOT read it, I don't want to give details away, but it will be well worth the money. The trial was boring to me and I couldn't follow, but Mr. Baez wrote the book so we as readers could understand and follow. All of the intricate pieces of evidence were presented and now I see how a NOT GUILTY verdict was rendered. The media was only out for ratings, but if you want to know the facts, read the book from the people who were actually involved. I was deeply touched. If for nothing else, I hear the proceeds from the book will go to Aaron's daughter, the truly innocent victim in all of this.Thanks Jose, job well done.

Let's identify and then count the number of shells we find. Sweetly written and inspiring! Gave my Grands this book as a warm up to their upcoming vacation. By the number of times they read this book, I suspect those little fellas will not only be able to count to ten, but identify their beach shells as well! Endearingly written for girls or boys!

Nice story and illustrations. good for kids about 5-8

I started collecting shells with my grand son when he was 3 years old. I didn't realize that he would become fascinated with them and want to learn about the different kinds of shells. He now has a collection that includes shells (and stones) from Florida, Hawaii, Mexico, Malaysia and Michigan. He compares his shells to the ones pictured in the book and we learn about them together. Great beginner and intermediate book. I learned a few things about shells that I didn't know!

I bought 3 books for our vacation to the Gulf Coast. This book was great! It definitely helped my 6 year old identify the seashells she found and the critters she saw. Cute story too.

I love the illustrations in this book. I love the story line of the children's adventure to gather shells. I love that their is a family element.This is a great book for Elementary and Kindergarten students to learn about shells and collecting shells. This is also a great gift to go along with something made of shells or in a shell shape. You can take a bag of shells you have collected and look through the illustrations and match them.

This a cute book, but the board book version is surprisingly flimsy. I’ll have to mind my child when he is handling it.

I like this book because we live on the beach and it's a great way to teach the grandchildren about collecting seashells. I have gathered up most of the shells listed in the book and I'll have the children pick them out as we are reading about them.

I bought this book for my son as a gift. We were planning a Florida beach vacation and I wanted to find a book that would get him excited. This is a great book and the illustrations make you want to be on the beach. We ended up finding many seashells on our trip and he was so excited because we had read this book prior.

This book fills an important gap in large scale data science.Spark has emerged as the big data platform of choice for data scientists both from the ease of use as well as the performance / optimization point of view. In a few lines of Scala code, Spark allows you to write iterative algorithms that scale out very well. For a data scientist who wants to explore large scale data sets, Spark is a great starting point (this is incredible progress in the Spark community given the project is just about 4 years old). However, Spark itself is moving fast and maturing with time, and Spark and Scala as well as distributed algorithms are typically not in the arsenal of many data scientists today.What this book does is teach you how to think about data science problems at scale, in the context of Spark. By well chosen examples covering both supervised and unsupervised learning, the authors take you step by step from a practical problem definition (say how to recommend music given user's history of music listened to) to what features are relevant, what machine learning algorithm to use and how to tune parameters to optimize the solution and how you can use Spark to do all of this in an interactive / iterative manner. As a bonus, they also point you to well engineered data sets that you can use to follow along the discussion and learn by trying out the examples yourself.By embracing the feature engineering steps and data cleaning/ error handling and tuning /feedback steps, the authors manage to show how real world data science works and how you can do full stack data science using Spark and gain immensely from the interactive nature of the Spark REPL.Overall, I highly recommend this book, and though it is the first book on Data Science using Spark, it sets a high standard for subsequent efforts.

It is a so, so book. Examples are okay and the codes provided are "elegant" - certainly the result of spending hours and hours optimizing them; but that is not what a typical Spark users will face in life. The explanations are hurried and they make it very hard for the reader to connect the dots. It seems that the book's intent was right, but the application was woefully inadequate. If you do all the work in the book, you will be very competent at reading csv files - but is about all. The authors have a habit of providing esoteric "helper" functions to clean up the files but you don't really understand what is happening because either the explanations are thin or there is none to be found. A big part of data science is preparing the data - anyone can turn the crank on clean data but how do you go from the start to finish. This was their opportunity and they left a big gap. Spark's ML examples are nicer than what is presented in this book; paying for a book to get minimal information is a bit odd. I was really looking forward to going through this book and I am glad I did; it makes me appreciate authors who spend time writing good books.

TL;DR If you are looking for a intro to data science, data analysis and machine learning at scale - this is the right book. Sure, there are others, maybe more popular books from O'Reilly considering these topics, but the authors of those are using R and Python and the books are not focused on the performance and scalability. To sum up, I recommend this book to every data scientist - because it demonstrates advanced topics like workload distribution and scaling on an enjoyable examples.

Pinecar is not Pinewood Derby, it uses a solid axle and different wheels.As far as construction instructions go, I own every Pinewood derby book and I'd say this is the worst one I have read. I have high expectations, and I was not disappointed.Aside from being a Buddhist monk, scholar, meditation teacher, mathematician, and science geek, Shinzen is also a linguist, so he's very particular and precise with his use of words, pronunciation, and diction (especially with foreign languages). He likes to define and clarify any ambiguity in the terms he uses in his discourses. He doesn't go into too much philosophical conjecture and speaks in a friendly matter-of-factness tone.The bottom line: Shinzen Young demystified the concept classical enlightenment, making "happiness independent of conditions" a realistic and tangible goal for people who choose to tread the path of liberation.Thanks to Shinzen Young I now realize that my kind of practice is Vipassana, my proclivity is towards Theravada, and that, when I grow up, I want to become a hard-nosed rationalist Buddha :)~C

In a global era we can't expect for things to be the same and to just be involved with people the same as we are. This book sheds some light over the way these relationships work and the many ways people have to make it work for them.

Engaging and informative for those families who would choose to raise their children with knowledge of more than one religion and tradition. This is a story about faith and belief and move beyond the boundaries of one particular tradition so that children and adults are aware of the sacred through two sets of eyes--and engagement. Most families are learning about Judaism and Christianity--but there are examples of other combinations as well.

Being Both is an insightful, thought provoking book showing how interfaith families, after decades of being told no you can't, are demonstrating that yes, they absolutely can raise children dual-faith and do so in a way that is not at all detrimental. Susan Katz Miller's primary research, including surveys and extensive interviews of couples, children, young adults, and clergy, as well as sharing her own personal interfaith experiences result in rich, moving story. As a spouse in an interfaith marriage raising dual-faith children, it was inspiring and comforting to read about others who are trying similar approaches and to know that obstacles can be overcome. I was so glad to read a book that is so clearly enthusiastic about the experience of raising children in more than one faith. I found myself saying "amen" (silently, in my head, since I was on the plane) almost every page!I really hope that this book gets widely read and distributed. I feel that the interfaith communities where children are educated and families celebrate are still really hidden, so that when people do hear about them they act as if they are part of some crazy, untested theory rather than something that has been going on for years. I was surprised at how old some of the "where are they now?" kids were!I also want to thank you for your honesty in sharing your story. It's not easy. I totally understand the "sighs" you talk about. Good work.

As my husband and I discussed the idea of marriage 21 years ago, we read every book about interfaith relationships we could find. There weren't many available but they helped guide us get to where we are now. Susan Katz-Miller's book is so comprehensive and honest and hopeful. It has reaffirmed for us that the choices we made were the right ones for our family and that we are not alone. This book is great for everyone whose lives are touched by interfaith relationships at any stage of life...interesting, helpful and easy to read, it's a great resource for this day and age. Miller’s book is a self-serving discussion justifying multi-faith religious education of children. This book is not about pluralism, interfaith dialogue or religious tolerance. However, the book is a good read on what interfaith families have to endure. The book is well detailed and document in an attempt to justify the "embracing of two or more religions in one interfaith family". The book provides much source material for the "muddying down" of religious traditional observance by replacing it with interfaith observance by children outside the mainstream of religious observance. The parents of interfaith marriages are being portrayed as being already ambivalent about institutional religion themselves with some being raised in interfaith or religion-less families. The result being that their children are being manipulated into determining which religion or religions by being made to choose for themselves being educated in two or more religions because their parents are unwilling make that choice for their children or themselves. My major concern of the book is that institutional religions are falsely portrayed as being hostile to interfaith families and children. My wife and I in an interfaith marriage of 27 years have attended both mainstream church and synagogue regularly and have been welcomed in both settings. We also raised two children. The book's objective is to have children "cherry pick" their religion or combination of religions of choice in adulthood absolving the parents of responsibility. The book’s real purpose is to portray traditional religious observance as being hostile to interfaith families already struggling to raise children in a religious environment by negating what the traditional religious education and observance has to offer.

This is probably among the five worst books ever written. I'd rather read the instruction manual for a blender written by someone with limited English proficiency. The book is about four car races, but I promise that you won't care at all who wins. Instead, you'll just be waiting for the story to end so you can tuck in your precious child and then go bang your head against the wall out of frustration that you wasted good money on this work of literary garbage. My son made me upgrade the review to two stars because he said it's mean to insult a birthday gift. If your child has any friends you're not particularly fond of, give them this book as a birthday gift and they will cross you off their friend list.

This is a nonfiction book filled with interesting pieces of trivia, arcane historical facts, and tidbits of little known knowledge, each little piece made bite-sized and easy to understand for the common man.The book has something for everybody, literally. The subjects contained in this book vary from art museums for only bad art, to zip-ties scaring away magpies, and from Andy George's $1500 sandwich to Zachary Taylor coining the term "First Lady". It has a handy index to find what you want, and the website resources for the author's material are listed thoroughly in the back if you are interested in learning more. Warning: such a diverse range of subjects does include several that are rather crude and/or adult in their nature, so this is not a book that children should read, as harmless as it may appear.On the negative side, I don't think that this book should be called an "encyclopedia", because it is very random in its layout and is not organized at all. Webster's 1828 Dictionary states that an encyclopedia must be alphabetized to fall under that name. Funk & Wagnalls Standard College Dictionary has a slightly broader definition: it says an encyclopedia has to be systematically arranged. This book is neither.Also on the negative side, the book sometimes goes to unreliable resources on the web (such as Twitter and YouTube), and several things that the author states as fact seem rather skeptical to me. I don't think the author is lying, not at all, and that isn't what I mean. I simply think that some of the information he was going on might have been exaggerated or incorrect. There's a lot of that on the internet.There were a few things that I didn't like about the book, but the pros outweigh the cons in my opinion. I'd give it 3 1/2 stars, or possibly 4.

I really enjoyed this book. I have gotten a few of Bill O'Neill's books. I especially liked his Movie Madness Book Because I love Movie Trivia!! This book though The Fun Knowledge Encyclopedia is great because it's a little bit of everything all in one book!! If you like Trivia like I do you will love Bill O'Neils's Trivia books. He has all kinds on all kinds of subjects. Presidents, Movies, Football, Baseball, whatever you like.

As a person who enjoys trivia, I foound this book to be really good at minute facts and events - that could be used in light conversation at a social gathering or event. You'll enjoy reading it too! recommended.

If you love learning interesting tidbits of life you never stopped to think about, this is the book for you.

This book contains a wealth of information, presented in an easy-to-read style.It would benefit from the attentions of a proofreader.
