Colorful illustrations and the text is sweetly done. I have had many Chinese children look at this book. It is eye catching in our library. Gung Hay Fat Choy. There isn't much text in this book but, it is interesting. It is marked 3.5 for Accelerated Reader but, honestly I would read it to K and 1st graders. 2nd graders at the most.

I bought this board book for a friend and borrowed the hard cover copy for my daughter from the library. I'll need to order my daughter her own hardcopy soon! She loves the fold-out dragon at the end of the story and I like that the illustrations and story reflect our family's culture. She sees a family that looks like hers honoring traditions we do at home. I absolutely love that her experiences are reflected back to her in this book. Lin's illustrations are vibrant, fun and you can pick out new details with each read.

Good book to introduce Chinese New Year! I purchased this book for my son's preschool room. The teacher and the students were all enjoying reading the book.

MAY 2013: This is a great book. So simple. I've read this at play groups for 1.5-2year olds & they loved it. But it still captures the attention of older kids. Well written, bright colors. I love this book.MAY 2014: i have yet to meet a child that doesn't love this book. I have read it at Lunar New Year themed playgroups with children up to 9 years old. Every single child loves it and learns the basics of lunar new year from this book. It's a perfect introduction to chinese new year. the fold out dragon is the favorite of course! We always read it at least twice in a row.the second time we have children volunteer to do each activity (i.e. one sweeps out the new year, etc)

Not as representative as it could be about the Chinese new year traditions, such as the way the dumplings were made and the dresses females wore. Maybe more about the new year traditions in southern China (e.g., Hong Kong)?! Everything else is generally informative and accurate.

Love Grace Lin’s delightful illustrations and storytelling. I bought this one about Chinese New Year for my toddler after reading and re-reading “Dim Sim For Everyone,” also by Grace. This story has more text than Dim Sum for Everyone and is probably more age-appropriate for kids 3-6 than my toddler. She’ll grow into it though, so we’re gonna hold onto it. In any case, I got to learn more about my own Chinese culture, and I’m in my thirties!

Great book for kids to learn about different heritage. My grand kid is part Chinese and they love this book

I bought this book for my cousins. They love it.The story is engaging and the vibrant colors are terrific.Grace Lin is a talented writer and artist. Thanks, Grace!

The Hidden Rules of Race: Barriers to an Inclusive Economy (Cambridge Studies in Stratification Economics: Economics and Social Identity), by Andrea Flynn

Review

'The Hidden Rules of Race shines an objective light on the discriminatory systems and structures that perpetuate disparities between black and white Americans. The authors' call for a comprehensive reorientation of our perspective on economic and racial inequality is bold, timely, and deeply necessary for those of us who wish to build a more inclusive future.' Darren Walker, President, Ford Foundation'Anyone focused on social change knows that there are a set of written and unwritten rules that incentivize and fortify the status quo. The work of social change - the work of undoing racism - is changing those rules. In The Hidden Rules of Race, the team at Roosevelt has created a clear and actionable analysis, instrumental to identifying some of the most important interventions we can make, and to help us do the work better.' Rashad Robinson, Executive Director, Color of Change'Race matters. As our racial landscape dramatically changes, we must pay more attention to the racial inequities that continue to plague many communities of color. In The Hidden Rules of Race, we get a roadmap to why and how we must rewrite the racial rules in order to pave the way for racial and economic justice.' Deepa Iyer, Senior Fellow, Center for Social Inclusion'For too long, efforts to combat racial inequalities have been pitted against efforts to combat economic inequalities, in ways that have only empowered those who benefit from both. The authors of The Hidden Rules of Race show how in virtually all spheres of American life, the nation operates with explicit and tacit rules that perpetuate both race and class inequities. They advance proposals that should be central to national debates on how to pursue more truly equal rights and opportunities for all.' Rogers M. Smith, Christopher H. Browne Distinguished Professor of Political Science, University of Pennsylvania'This book draws on a variety of data sources and methods to demonstrate how the racial rules affecting wealth, income, education, criminal justice, health, and democratic participation continue to produce suboptimal outcomes in the largest economy in the world. It identifies not only rules that exclude large numbers of people from participating fully in the economy and in society, it also provides examples of rules that have minimized inequality and that produce greater equity. To say that The Hidden Rules of Race gives timely clarity to one of the most pressing and fundamental issues in our society today would be a vast understatement. This is essential reading for economists, policymakers, corporate leaders, and all participants in our modern economy and society who would like to see [black Americans] achieve their maximum potential.' Lisa D. Cook, Associate Professor of Economics and International Relations, Michigan State University

Sends positive messages about how race is evaluated

GREAT READ

It provided a different perspective into the dynamics of race in America. It validates the statement race, class, and socioeconomic status is intertwined and can be readily substituted.

Andrea Flynn is terrific

Great read

With their book, "The Hidden Rules of Race," Andrea Flynn and her various co-editors associated with the progressive Roosevelt Institute, have contributed mightily to a new conversation we need to have in America about what progress means in the 21st Century. The analysis they offer, and bolster with the addition of select articles by allied thought leaders like Darrick Hamilton and john a. powell, is most thoughtful and timely. At its essence, the book argues for meaningful new efforts to encourage a major shift in U.S. economic thinking and policy towards rules and legal concepts that fundamentally encourage and expand mobility and opportunity for poor, working, and middle class Americans who have been mired in stagnation for now nearly 40 years under "Trickle Down" conservative and neoliberal economic priorities. Their analysis keenly surfaces largely unrecognized but still powerful barriers to economic opportunity that bear down especially hard on African American citizens and communities. These include institutional and legal inequities that persist largely under the radar in areas ranging from education and access to capital to predatory lending and intensifying gentrification and housing segregation. Additionally, criminal justice and health are central foci of the book's attention. The book closes with important insights on key aspects of American democracy and politics that are also compromised in terms of precluding--rather than promoting--opportunity and inclusion; and they offer a range of thought-provoking ideas, strategies, and prospective reforms in law and policy that would more actively facilitate a more winning approach, to better serve both struggling American workers, families, and communities, as well as the larger society and economy. This work is an important complement to recent groundbreaking research supported by the Roosevelt Institute in collaboration with Nobel Prize-winning economist, Joseph Stiglitz ("Rewriting the Rules of the American Economy: An Agenda for Growth and Shared Prosperity," Stiglitz, J., 2015). The "Hidden Rules of Race" is essential reading for this critically important, transitional moment in American political economy. It is well written, informative, and inspiring. I would give this book the highest possible marks and urge all who are concerned about the recent course of advanced capitalism and governance in the U.S. to purchase and read it.

There are a lot of books and articles about racism in American society, but none that I've seen do as good a job as Hidden Rules explaining its structural causes and impacts. The book has a ton of good information and sources, and is very well laid out, so you can follow or skip around as you please. I definitely recommend the searchable e-book.

No society is truly equal but inequality should not be caused by one’s race, gender or another personal factor. This is a specialist book, looking at whether creating economic equality could solve racial and gender inequality. It is written from a pro-U.S. perspective, which is no bad thing when the country allegedly is conscious about discrimination, despite the obvious inequalities that can be found. Poverty is not, of course, restricted to a certain demographic, just as sickness knows no boundaries, but there is a powerful argument that says inequality can disproportionate place people into an economically disadvantageous situation. It is sensitively written, rather than being a firebrand book, letting the stories and figures speak for themselves, noting that progress has been made on one hand with equality whilst it has been held back on the other. There is more to be addressed, but is it necessarily a simple action? This is a book that demands your attention. It can be hard-going in places due to its authoritative, academic nature, but the subject also deserves a certain focus from the reader. Its coverage within the sphere of economics is broad, looking at underlying structures, wealth inequality, education and societal challenges, criminal justice and even the wider issues of democracy. A lot of the issues are described as ‘hidden rules of race’, and this sounds appropriate and in no way ‘tin foil hat’ territory. Consideration is also given to what could be changed and how this may be instigated. As you would expect in a book of this kind, there are extensive bibliographic resources to inspire further and deeper reading. The authors do not pull their punches, rejecting some conventional viewpoints in the process to advocate their nuanced beliefs. It makes it an interesting book, even if you are not an economist nor directly affected by such inequalities and a worthwhile consideration to your reading pile nonetheless.

This was a good introduction to antennas. I'm not a total beginner, as I have a basic understanding of electromagnetism and related concepts. This did help quite a bit to understand relationships between antenna height above ground and radiation patterns, etc. The section on types of matches to use with yagi antyennas was especially useful. However, I felt the book should have been written a a stand-alone book, rather than relying upon (and to some extent, advertising) antenna design software.I read about half of the book, focusing on the basic concepts and later, designs that most closely apply to my planned applications. It left me feeling like I couldn't easily analyze antenna designs without purchasing the recommended software. So, 4 stars for teaching me quite a bit. But in order to get a full five stars, it should have been written to stand on it's own, omitting the chapter dedicated to the software. I just hate buying a book only to learn that I have to buy software in order to make full use of an entire chapter.Still I would definitely recommend this book to anyone wanting to understand the basic concepts.

While not an 'in depth' or advanced look at antennas, it more than covers the basics of how antennas work, covers designs of different antennas for different frequencies, and the math involved in antenna design. Especially useful for new amateur radio operators who are looking for alternatives to the over priced commercial antennas available. Found it very useful.

Oh boy where to begin... ARRL Basic? Antennas. Loved the book, I got out of it just what I wanted and that was the Formulas for making wire antennas and understanding Balanced and unbalanced antennas. Do I understand Impedance now, nope. But at least now I know what questions to ask other Hams that can help me. So as I learn more of my hobby I am sure this book will be of great help.

This book is on basic antenna designs. A must for beginner or intermediate radio enthusiasts. If you are thinking of shortwave or any radio listening as a hobby, this is a great starters instrucion book. If you don't have a well planned antenna set up, no matter how good the electronics, you will get poor or no acceptable reception.

This also is another great book to help any one that is interested in amateur radio to look into as it will help you to understand more about the main object of the ham radio hobby, because the antenna is the principal & what I mean by that is that even with a cheap little radio you can talk further and better if you have a bigger and better antenna. This book will help you to understand antenna's

This book stinks. It should show how to build an antennaAll the techno stuff needs to be in there. But useless unless you have a degree electrical engineeeingDon’t waste your money if you are look for some simple designs

Amateur radio is well known as a DIY hobby. When I got my ham license I didn't really have any interest in building my own radio. However, even if you buy an expensive Yaesu or Kenwood radio that's ready to go out of the box, you still need to know something about antennas. That's where this book comes in. Antennas are usually the weakest link that you have control over in radio communication. If you don't know much about antennas, you'll have a very hard time making contact with others. This book is extremely essential because it gives you what you need to know to get on the air reliably. The ARRL Antenna Book is practically the antenna bible, but if you're just getting started in radio, this basic antenna book is what you want to have.

This is a great book for beginners. It goes really in depth, but is easy to figure out what to do next. I will be building my own antenna very soon. There are even a few kids in the book that show examples of what they have built themselves.

I wish Susan Wise Bauer had been one of my college professors! One can only benefit greatly from her writing and dedication to helping promote understanding, education, and wisdom, and helping her readers to remember who we are and why. This book was definitely a welcome addition to my bookshelves. I first experienced her writing in three huge history books: The History of the Ancient World, The History of the Medieval World, and The History of the Renaissance World, vast compediums of knowlage and many facts and personages overlooked unfortunately by today's educators in many cases. These three books, along with The Story of Western Science, should be "must" reading for the student of history, science, and the mind of humanity. I am currently hoping she addresses the history of the Reformation World next....!

While I'm only just into the beginning, I like how she leads me through the classics of science. Although I've read some of them before, I have never read them as a chronological series. BYU used to offer a distance uni class that I didn't get around to taking before they got rid of it. This, so far, has been a great substitute, sans college credit.

The Story of Western Science covers major science advancements and the people behind them in topical and then chronological order. Each is explained to make it easy for the layperson to understand. The chapters end with links to pertinent writings and books (sometimes down to the edition) to read for more information about the topic. It would be very easy to turn into a science course for a high school student or for personal enrichment. I highly recommend this book!

The author covers an amazing sweep of history, boiling down the important points and making them clear and concise. She also provides references to the source material and discusses the different editions available.

This is a fantastic introduction to the people and the books that have created the modern world. Each chapter does a great job setting the context and introducing the major primary sources of the scientific canon. Just reading the chapters is an education in the history of science and ideas. An excellent resource for teens and adults who want to understand the context of science as it has been practiced for the past 2000 years.

An easy to understand overview of the major players and ideas in the development of current scientific theory and practice.

Fun and informative. Guaranteed to appeal to the your inner science geek. Bit of a dry read if you’re looking for entertainment but great for those who want to learn about the history scientific study. Also provides some interesting trivia about the origins of the various branches of “modern” scientific study began.

This is a great reference book. I am very much into history and enjoyed Bauer's trilogy on world history, and saw that she also authored this. It can be read from front to back, but I think it is intended more as a reference for other great works. In sum, it is a good addition to any library.
