Five stars hands down. The only memoir I ever related to as much as this one was Samantha Irby's We are Never Meeting in Real Life. I feel so connected to Ms. Irby after reading both of these and I understand SO much of what she has been through. She is incredibly open, honest, and humorous even when describing the most painful experiences she's had to endure. I wish she were my friend in real life and I hope to one day be able to write as well as she does.

Samantha Irby is an amazing person for sharing her life with all of us. Intimate details of her bouts with family, love life, health issues, social life, and always bounces back with maniacal laughter. We all had those hard times we all suffered through, but are too embarrassed to talk about it. She goes all out to expose herself (on many levels) to the world to say it like it is. It is hard not to fall in love with her, sometimes seeing your own life situations reflected in this book. Easy and fun to read, I recommend this to anybody who was once (or is) a teenager full of angst, or an adult that felt like the world needs to be shaken upside down by it's ankles. I just love Sam!

I absolutely adore Samantha Irby's writing - there is no other author that puts me at more risk of laughing out loud in public (and occasionally crying in public, as well). I'll buy anything and everything she produces!

Sam Irby is my favorite person to pretend is a real-life friend. Her writing is warm, hilarious, and betrays a deep insight into the human condition. I love every essay in this book and WANMIRL and her blog. I wish she could outsource her book tour so book #3 could get into the world faster.

I first stumbled across Bitches Gotta Eat based on a friend's recommendation. I love the blog and the insightful yet no-holds-barred humor. Meaty is fantastic--insightful, tell-it-like-it-is, girl-don't-even-ACT-like-you-can't-relate humor that left me laughing so hard no sound came out. THE DREADED "SILENT LAUGH", Y'ALL! Very few things can elicit that level of pure joy from me. Buy it, read it, share it with a friend...but be sure to get it back, because you'll want to read it again when you have an everything-sucks-let's-just-stay-in-bed-and-sulk kind of day. It'll make it all better, I promise.

I found this collection of essays to be more emotionally wrought than her second book, but there is still the sense of Irby's understanding of the world and wry sense of humor. I found myself relating to here throughout the writing, and also wishing the best for her. She feels like a friend as she shares her history and her trials, along with her thoughts & feelings.

A great compilation of some of the "Bitches Gotta Eat" blog posts. If, like me, you prefer to read old-fashioned paper books instead of electronic screens, this is perfect. It includes some especially personal accounts of Irby's childhood that I didn't know before, and I think those round out the collection with more depth.I hope more of her compilations are published in book form!

Yes, Samantha Irby is extremely vulgar and writes candidly about everything (I do mean everything). She's a bit too self-deprecating and negative most of the time. But her writing is undeniably great. While very easy to read, it still makes me laugh and think. Four stars with ease for that feat.

#629,113 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

This interesting book gave me a new view of Ellen White and her prophetic ministry. I grew up at a time when the church held her every word to be inspired and in some cases, even more instructive than the Bible. Over the years, I have had a number of experiences that helped me modify that view of Ellen White and her work. I was surprised to discover that much of her communication was severely lacking in specificity. Thus, many times her counsel was ignored or misunderstood. Several years ago, I visited Elmshaven, Ellen White’s last home. Her granddaughter was caretaker of the home and gave tours through the place. Some out-of-town guests were with us for our tour. They were very conservative and even a bit fanatical regarding Christmas. They viewed it as almost a sin to have any of the trappings of Christmas in their home and even worse in a church. My friends asked if Ellen White allowed them to have a Christmas tree. The granddaughter’s reply was quite memorable. "Oh my, yes!” she replied. “Grandma would go with us children up the canyon to make sure we selected a nice tree.” The granddaughter then described how Ellen White would sit in her chair and supervise the children as they decorated the tree. It made her seem so human. Valentine does the same, documenting her frailties as well as the great contribution she made to the growth and development of the Seventh-day Adventist church. He also recognizes the spiritual gift of administration, especially as seen in the work of A. G. Daniels. The last chapter which provides A Hermeneutical Paradigm for Understanding Ellen White in the 1890’s is worth the cost of the book. It provides an enlightened view of the nature of inspiration. If the book has a fault, it might be in the tremendous amount of detail the author presents. However, what some readers might view as tedious trivia, I found enjoyable and informative. I would recommend this book to every thoughtful Adventist, especially those searching to gain a greater understanding of the prophetic gift.

Valentine, G. M. (2011). The prophet and the presidents: Ellen G. White and the processes of change, 1887-1913: A study of Ellen White's influence on the administrative leadership of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. Oshawa, Ont., Canada: Pacific Press. ISBN: 9780816324859, pp. 383. Kindle edition, $9.99.Reviewed by Stanley E. Patterson, PhDStanley Patterson is the Executive Director of the Christian Leadership Center and Professor of the Christian Ministry Department of Andrews University in Berrien Springs, Michigan, USA.This book exposes a period (c. 1888-1913) in Adventist history and in the life of Seventh-day Adventist prophet Ellen White that has been poorly reported and historically underexplored. Many of the episodes dealt with in the pages of this volume can be appropriately described as painful and troubling. As the Seventh-day Adventist Church matured and adopted organizational structures to deal with the complexities of growth, human nature and the predictable corruptions wrought by power and control revealed themselves in the lives of men and women charged with the sacred duty of providing spiritual leadership. The church and the ministries functioning as extensions of the church suffered the dysfunction and at times the abuse of leadership gone awry.During these years Ellen White, though physically distanced from the General Conference leaders due to her move to Australia, remained active in bearing testimonies intended to guide and influence actions and the direction of the church. Valentine makes a biblical case supporting her intense involvement in church governance by referencing the political behavior of prophets such as Samuel (loc 429), Nathan (ibid), Ahijah, Micaiah (loc 437) and others who counseled and advised kings and rulers as a regular part of their prophetic ministry. Ellen White’s testimonies like those of her ancient counterparts were often resented, ignored, or misunderstood. Her relationship with the presidents were consequently fraught with tension and at times conflict due to the failure on the part of leaders to act on her counsel. The narratives shared also raise a question regarding Ellen White—whose voice was being expressed, God or hers? Was she influenced by the shabby treatment she received from church leaders and especially leaders in the publishing work and did this poor treatment influence the tone of her testimonies? As Valentine delicately points out, “some aspects of temperament and personality became perhaps, more noticeable during her sunset years…” (loc 5556). In plain words she became at times quite harsh in her words and reactions to leaders who seemed to be doing the best they could in a challenging context. Thus we see a human side to the prophet that should not surprise us since her ancient counterparts again were presented in both their failures and in their victories. But, “such things did not invalidate her gift” (ibid). This is not a book for the immature. It reveals the raw challenge of leading and in turn being led by God’s servant. It reveals not only the humanity of the prophet but lays open the humanity of the leaders who served during the uncertainty of the “turn of the 20th century” church. The reader is exposed to the reality of the personal debt carried by Ellen White incurred by her in agreement with leaders who later betrayed her by withholding royalties that might have mitigated the debt. This indebtedness was so restricting on her life that there were times she fell months behind in paying something as essential as grocery bills not to mention the salaries of people dedicated to helping with her publications. In some sense the candid expose of this period is refreshing to a reader who too often reads only the good news but is “shielded” from the adventures and follies that make up life behind the scenes. Though painful and sometimes difficult to read, this book is a must for anyone wishing for a candid snapshot of life for the church in these formative years. The battles, the broken relationships, and the amazing growth that emerged from what at times appeared to be irreconcilable chaos provide powerful lessons for us more than a century hence. The book is especially helpful as a resource to church leaders who would wish to avoid the pitfalls that ensnared early leaders, some of whom completely lost their way and separated from the church.Read it, reflect on the narratives, and praise God for a Spirit that has allowed the survival of a church that has subsequently blessed millions.

Dr. Valentine is FANTASTIC in his scope of understanding and ability to share the struggles and the blessings experienced by the leader Ellen G. White and her charisma. If you thought you knew about SDA church history...you'll be surprised at how much you don't! Pick it up, give it a read. The quotes from letters and journals...amazing.

This is a well written treatise about the inner circle of the Seventh-Day Adventist church at its inception and during its first sixty years. Its spiritual leader, Ellen G. White, is revealed in an honest and insightful manner; one can see why God chose her to lead this great movement.

The Book Thief (Anniversary Edition)

Review

“Brilliant and hugely ambitious…Some will argue that a book so difficult and sad may not be appropriate for teenage readers…Adults will probably like it (this one did), but it’s a great young-adult novel…It’s the kind of book that can be life-changing, because without ever denying the essential amorality and randomness of the natural order, The Book Thief offers us a believable hard-won hope…The hope we see in Liesel is unassailable, the kind you can hang on to in the midst of poverty and war and violence. Young readers need such alternatives to ideological rigidity, and such explorations of how stories matter. And so, come to think of it, do adults.” -New York Times"The Book Thief is unsettling and unsentimental, yet ultimately poetic. Its grimness and tragedy run through the reader's mind like a black-and-white movie, bereft of the colors of life. Zusak may not have lived under Nazi domination, but The Book Thief deserves a place on the same shelf with The Diary of a Young Girl by Anne Frank and Elie Wiesel's Night. It seems poised to become a classic." -USA Today"Zusak doesn’t sugarcoat anything, but he makes his ostensibly gloomy subject bearable the same way Kurt Vonnegut did in Slaughterhouse-Five: with grim, darkly consoling humor.” -Time Magazine"Elegant, philosophical and moving...Beautiful and important." -Kirkus Reviews, Starred"This hefty volume is an achievement...a challenging book in both length and subject..." -Publisher's Weekly, Starred "One of the most highly anticipated young-adult books in years." -The Wall Street Journal"Exquisitely written and memorably populated, Zusak's poignant tribute to words, survival, and their curiously inevitable entwinement is a tour de force to be not just read but inhabited." -The Horn Book Magazine, Starred"An extraordinary narrative." -SLJ, Starred

She takes an immediate like to Hans, who is kind and thoughtful, but takes much longer to warm up to the abrasive Rosa.Liesel makes friends with next-door neighbor Rudy and establishes herself as a self-proclaimed book thief. Becoming unlikely friends with the Mayor’s wife Ilsa affords Liesel the opportunity to read the books in the Mayor’s massive library. Along the way, Liesel is witness to the atrocities of war, heartbreaking events, love, loss and other life-changing events.I saw the movie The Book Thief several years ago and loved it. When I decided it was time to read the book I was absolutely captivated. Although the book is 550 pages long, I read it in just two days – it was THAT good. The book is different in several ways, ways in which I won’t go into in my review. Suffice it to say that I’m glad I saw the movie first and then read the book. I think I might have been disappointed with the movie version if it had happened in opposite order. This just goes to show how well the author has written this important piece of fictionalized history. The time period, location, mood, characters, etc. come to life as the story unfolds.I was surprised at some of the other reviews, stating that the book was just plain depressing. I’m not at all sure how a book that deals with the systematic extinction of a race of people can be written about in an uplifting, happy way. Yet, the book is so much more than a story about a German girl who is living in Nazi Germany during WWII. There are many lovely, tender elements to be found in The Book Thief. The additional anniversary edition footnotes written by the author (at the end of the book) provide wonderful insight.I think it’s extremely important that all generations read books like The Book Thief. This is part of history and, as poet and philosopher George Santayana said, "Those who do not remember the past are doomed to repeat it." This is a book that is emotionally draining, but very much worth the read!

I waited way too long to read this book. I don't even really know why I waited so long, other than Courtney and I started this blog around the same time that I actually bought the book and it took me a while to get to the point where I started reading some of the books that I wanted to read instead of just books that we received requests for.If you follow my blog at all, you know that I love WWII era historical fiction. What I loved about this book is that it showed the lives of average Germans during the war. That's not a perspective I've seen a lot (or ever that I can think of off the top of my head). But Liesel's foster family wasn't exactly average either because they held unfavorable opinions about Jewish people, at least unfavorable by German standards during the war.Another highlight of this story was that it was told from the perspective of Death. It was a bit odd to get used to at first because he jumped around a bit, as Death is wont to do in the course of his work, but once I got used to it, it was a fun way to see things. While death isn't exactly omniscient, he does have access to information that a human narrator wouldn't have.I realize that I'm late enough to this party that you've probably already made up your mind about whether you want to read this book or not, but if you're still on the fence about it, you should absolutely not wait any longer. You're likely to regret it if you do, like I did.Overall I give The Book Thief 5.05 stars.

With a heart full to overflowing and eyes quite moist, I finish this novel of a young waif of a girl in Hitler’s Germany whose body, soul, and spirit ought never have survived her furnace of affliction. Yet survive she does, grittily and even poetically, with the aid of a good friend, a tender father, a Jewish refugee in the basement, a mother whose harshness runs only skin keep, and a traumatized mayor’s wife who loves to have her books stolen. As the old proverb—old but still true for all its rusty years—would tell us, ‘The book is far better than the movie’. This has never been more true than with Markus Zusak’s phenomenal achievement. The book is narrated by Death, the Grim Reaper. Yet he is not an evil presence, indeed his tender observations are endearing. In the end, the circumstances of 1940s Europe keep him far busier than he’d prefer. Yet he cannot take his eyes off these dismal, glorious humans. They haunt him, these human beings do. He sees such majesty in them, and such cruelty. The circumstances that call him into hard labors allow him to peer into the human condition at its best and, simultaneously, at its best.He cannot look away from them, these horrible, beautiful, haunting beings. This reader revels in the deeply biblical substratum of this compelling novel, whether intended by its author or not.The best book I’ve read in a year. And I’m hardly alone, for this work has virtually nailed itself to the top rung of the New York Times Bestsellers List. As another old proverb might have it, 50,000,000 Elvis fans can’t be wrong.Buy it, read it, remember it when you least expect.

Agree with all the others giving one or two stars: who in hell thought this was a good book? the style is exasperating and there is no much meat or story. Some say that is because it was intended to young people, but I wonder how young you have to be to enjoy that kind of writing. Tried to come to terms and finish it but I could not waste more time on this.
