When I was in law school, from time to time I would have a little intellectual banter with my classmates. We would quiz each other on the composition of our ideal United States Supreme Court if we could draft justices from any era (very exciting group of people, we lawyers). My own went something like Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr., Hugo Black, John Marshall, Joseph Story, James Wilson, John Marshall Harlan, Charles Evans Hughes, Louis Brandeis, and Lewis Powell. If I could pick judges who never made it to the highest level, I might substitute one out for Henry Friendly, Learned Hand, or Chancellor Kent. What was notable about our game, however, is almost no one picked justices from the current Supreme Court. This is in no small part because every one of them is a bland, unoriginal writer. The only near-contemporary I might name is the recently deceased Antonin Scalia. In his later years on the bench, he became the most prominent member of the federal judiciary as he published law review articles, granted television interviews, and gave talks across the country. A collection of his speeches, Scalia Speaks: Reflections on Law, Faith, and Life Well Lived, has been edited and recently published by Edward Whelan and the justice’s son Christopher Scalia. It performs expertly its task of showing a more personal side of the most important justice of the last thirty years. The central theme of this book is Justice Scalia’s ardent defense of originalism. There are two closely related but distinct theories of originalism: original intent and original meaning. Original intent looks at the text of a legal document and attempts to discern what the drafters intended for it to mean; original meaning, on the other hand, takes the text and interprets it using the understanding of the words as was common to the time of the law’s creation. Justice Scalia believed in the latter. The corollary to original meaning is textualism, the idea for modern statutes that words plainly mean what they say unless a different definition is provided.Another important theme of Justice Scalia’s work was the need for judicial humility and avoidance of reading one’s own views into a statute. In a speech to the Dominican Order, the justice explained Thomas Aquinas believed any written code opposed to natural law was immoral and invalid. Natural law is the idea that there are certain moral truths discernible by anyone using right reason. Justice Scalia’s argument against this position was twofold. First, it is impossible for any one individual to always correctly discern the moral arc of the universe. Even if particular issues seem to have a clear-cut answer, this type of judging will ultimately descend into choosing one’s own personal policy preferences. Second, as a practical matter, attempting to implement an equitable interpretation of the law, rather than what the words say, leads to unpredictable results. One of the most famous examples where Justice Scalia applied this argument was abortion. For him, Roe v. Wade and its case law progeny were a tragedy, not just as a member of the Catholic faith, but also for reading into the United States Constitution a right to abortion contained nowhere in the text. Justice Scalia argued that it should be left to the legislature, as the democratically elected branch, to determine whether or not to allow abortion; if the legislature chose to permit it, Justice Scalia would apply the law despite his personal disagreement with it as a policy.Justice Scalia faced a few major criticisms while alive. One was that he allegedly applied his own judicial philosophy of originalism inconsistently. Another was the concern of many that the Constitution is a relatively bare-bones text and legislatures are often lethargic or unresponsive in crafting laws supported by broad swaths of the public, so Justice Scalia’s philosophy did not account for the challenges of the modern era. Whether those criticisms have merit is left to each individual reader, but undoubtedly Justice Scalia’s views continue to have an outsized influence on legal interpretation.Justice Scalia covered a wide range of other issues, including his general hostility to using foreign law to interpret American rights outside rare circumstances, eulogies lamenting the passage of time and friends, his pride in being a Catholic and Italian-American (emphasis on American), the value of a college education for newly-minted graduates, and an encomium on turkey hunting that may be the best defense of sportsmanship by a federal official since Herbert Hoover’s advocacy of fly fishing. One section praising his personal heroes included a piece on William Howard Taft. Taft is a footnote in presidential history always coupled with Theodore Roosevelt, but Justice Scalia pointed out his pivotal role as chief justice in lobbying for the Supreme Court to receive their own building in Washington, D.C. and supporting the passage of a bill giving the court discretionary review over its appellate docket. This was always part of my esteem for the rotund man, and I am glad Justice Scalia concurred. My favorite speech in the collection, however, may be his defense of dissenting opinions. In his later years, Justice Scalia became increasingly stinging in his critiques of the direction the Supreme Court was headed. Sometimes a dissent is a cry from the wilderness unheeded at the time and later viewed as prophetic, other times it is an expression of individual quirkiness, and in some instances it represents the position of a substantial chunk of public opinion. In each case, it is an attempt by the dissenting judge to stake out his own intellectual domain and provoke the reader into considering a new view. Few performed this job better than Justice Scalia.Sometimes he would save those criticisms of colleague’s opinions for private discussion, rather than score easy political points with public criticism. As Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg noted in her touching foreword, “Now and then he would call me, or stop by my chambers, to point out a slip I had made in an opinion draft. He did this, resisting circulation of a memorandum, copes to other justices, that might embarrass me. When we disagreed, my final opinion was always clearer and more convincing than my initial circulation. Justice Scalia homed in on all the soft spots, energizing me to strengthen my presentation.” With the bitter partisan bickering that plagues both the Republican and Democratic parties, it is nice to know that tucked away in the far corners of government some people still have the capacity for personal respect during instances of professional disagreement.Justice Scalia’s absence from the Supreme Court leaves it poorer. Even on occasions when one disagreed with him, the force of his character and intellectual acumen challenged his opponent’s preconceived notions and pushed them to make their own arguments sharper. This collection shows the gifted mind and warm personality that defended American law for decades.

Beautifully written....Judge Scalia is a legend and, I believe, history will show him to be one of the most honorable judges to sit onthe bench... a man of great wisdomIn reading this book, the reader is quick to relate to this great man and his great compassion for those he serves...ALL the people. This bookhas given me the desire to look for those things which I can do to become more active in everyday life to seek opporunities to serve my fellowman and woman in quiet acts of random kindness and love'

I'm just barely into this book; but love it already! My limited impression so far is that this is REAL "stuff." Real LIFE "stuff." Wisdom flowing our of the Justice's mind and lips, with personal experience, humor, .... and this great "life stuff" that I can relate to. For me, it is a book for quiet, in-interrupted (fingers crossed! :) ) time; perhaps sipping hot coffee or tea, puffing on a pipe, or sipping slowly, on a Cordial or wine. Think. Listen intently; Don't read this book with the TV blaring! Be QUIET and listen to a voice - so far, mind you, I've just read a few chapters, - a voice of wisdom! I have communicate with one Justice of our Supreme Court; but how I regret never having written to Justice Antonin Scalia! I know I would cherish his reply. And I believe I would always receive a reply from him.

Chris Scalia has made his Dad, my dear friend Nino, a very proud Papa indeed. This collection of Nino’s speeches and writings, as his good friend and colleague Justice Ginsburg writes in her Foreword, confirms Nino’s indelible stamp on Supreme Court jurisprudence, indeed one of the best if not the best Justice in our Nation’s history.Chris reveals the good man his Dad was, a remarkable family, Nino’s loving wife Maureen McCarthy, who made Nino, the proud Italian American, eligible to become a member of the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick! Reading this wonderful book is bittersweet for those of us lucky to be in his company and to have him as a very dear friend. It is a book for all, irrespective of whether one is a lawyer. To understand our Nation and the rule of law, this is a must read, for Nino was truly a man for all seasons.

Buy it. I aspired to be a lawyer in my youth because it seemed like a good way to afford a Ferrari. That didn't work out, but my affinity for good legal logic always lingered. Reading this book enhanced the respect for the great minds of our jurisprudence. The mind of Justice Scalia, coupled with the moral compass that directed him, is so impressive, makes one cry out in agony for his loss to our highest court.

Justice Scalia was a great man. One who didn't try to impress people, but one who did anyway. Brilliant, but easy going. A good sense of humor along with a fine legal mind. The co-authors did a great job of putting this work together. You will enjoy this book and the Justices humor. His love of family, love of country and love of friends is evident throughout.

Love the style of this book from actual speeches and public engagements. While not a wild fan of some of his ideas and positions, Scalia certainly was the type of person almost anyone would have liked and this book makes you understand why. His commitment to communicating well and with anyone willing underlies his almost fanatical curiosity about people and wanting to understand them. This book does such great justice to a Justice who, while built from the upper echelons of the best institutions, was a commoner at heart. The higher and more prestigious he got, the more emphatic he was to champion the idea of the American Dream and the idea of the level playing field. There should be more books like this about people taken from their verbal interactions in which there is little place to hide, shade or misinterpret - and no commentary telling you what they just said.

Highly recommended. Thorough, easy to read, loaded with interesting anecdotes. If you’re going to the Nairobi Railroad Museum, read this first.

Personally, I consider this a definitive work on East Africa and an enjoyable read. This should be a "must read" for anyone wanting to spend time anywhere in modern East Africa. This book has been out of print a very long time, but timeless in historical content. I am replacing a copy that was "borrowed" just to have it on the shelf.

Brilliant. I had read it before and to search around to find it again, it being out of print, eventually Amazon found a source in America. A great story of the building of the East African Railway line across Kenya to Uganda. Tales of derring do and man eating lions. The accidental founding of Nairobi in a swamp. They ran out of rail! The crossing of the Rift Valley. How the train was often held up with elephants and rhinos on the line. A wonderful story and all true. Highly recommended.

Book spine was discolored and with a drop mark. The hardback was 'loose'. Looked like it was poorly stored, maybe in the sun to cause discoloration. Have just recd. it and started reading it. Very historical relatively recent history of the East Arfican Railway System. Looking forward to reading it with joy.

Good product, good price, good delivery

A spectacular account of the history we take for granted; great vocabulary for an English language novice. A must read for every Kenyan.

Love it. It goes to the core of those who were born and brought up there.Humorous historical comprehensive account of the British drive to built the Lunatice Express the Railway System in East Africa. It would be awesome if Hollywood were to make a movie based on this book, as it is replete with storytelling factual material.

It is very worn, but its a hard book to find! So I'm happy to have it! It's a fascinating book!

#45,046 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

I bought this book and its companion cookbook quite a few years ago, when the information was still current. At that time, both of the books were extremely useful to me. But then last year, I pulled them out again to study for my LPIC3-Security exam, and found that ALL security-related DNS info in this book is woefully out-of-date. (And, there's a lot of non-security-related stuff that's also out-of-date.) The newer versions of BIND have introduced a lot of new security features, and have a whole different way of doing business when it comes to both security and keeping things updated, and this book doesn't cover any of that.Otherwise, this book is extremely well-written, and is quite easy-to-read. Ten years ago, I would have cheerfully given this book the full five stars. I look forward to the day when Cricket Liu finally updates this book, so that I can give five stars to the new edition.

The encyclopedia of DNS books, meaning thicker than a phone book.I like the fact that this book is thick but so easy to read and follow along with. If you know nothing about DNS, this book makes it easy to learn about DNS. It starts with the history of DNS and then explains the hierarchy of the DNS tree. A must read if you want to improve your understanding of the internet and what happens under the hood for name resolution.

Foreword: I have been running my own DNS servers on OpenBSD and FreeBSD for about 4 years. All of my previous DNS knowledge was obtained from the man pages and online tutorials. The book is great because the example network used throughout the book is built upon, showing you how to "grow" your DNS with your expanding network. The design and implementation presented is priceless and covers some of my favorite topics: placement of slaves, hidden primaries, building root servers, split views, daisy-chaining, forwarders, partial-slaves, address maintenance issues, etc. The pros and cons of each setup are weighed and best practices are suggested. If you like a generous helping of diagrams, examples, and tables as a learning aid, you won't be disappointed. One specific example of weighing the pros and the cons is presented on page 479 as follows:"Could we have saved a few bucks on hardware by using our external authoritative nameservers as forwarders, too? Sure, but that would have presented a risk." After that statement, they proceed into all the details of "why."There is adequate coverage on security. The authors preach defense in depth. An implementation example includes hiding your masters and only exposing bastion slaves. Securing communications between the masters and slaves is also covered in the security chapter using DNSSEC and TSIG. I think IPSec is another way to add a security layer, but that is probably another book. After reading the book, I started to implement my new DNS infrastructure and found myself referring to the index often. It is fairly consummate, however, I found a few things missing, such as the $GENERATE statement. Also, some of the configuration details were lacking slightly. For example, the order in which ACL elements are processed and how negated elements affect the processing outcome. Another question I had was, what would happen if an ACL name is negated, and what if that ACL contained some negated elements. Well I found my answer by actually trying it and verifying with the canonical reference docs on isc.org.I gave this book five stars because of its effectiveness in presenting the concepts and implementations of DNS using examples, good writing style, tables, and diagrams. If you're looking for the last 4 percent of the diminutive details of DNS, you will find it on isc.org.

If you manage a bind instance, this book is indispensable. There are a number of clear examples of the configuration files, along with insightful and helpful hints that will help keep you out of trouble. Given how easy it is to screw your environment to the floor by messing up these files, you really need this book if you manage bind.

This is a classic. I have edition one and now the current version.

Overall it was an OK book. I am already "competent" with DNS, specifically the BIND9 implementation but I got the book as reference material since the official documentation is a little sparse. The fifth edition (not sure about the others) even covers, albeit a little too briefly, how to deal with reverse lookup zones with subnet masks that do not fall on octet boundaries.

DNS is one of those concepts that is almost kept in mystery in the tech world. The knowledge seems to be passed by word of mouth, and there doesn't seem to be one good repository to go to as an information source. That is not to say that this book is all inclusive, no book can contain every piece of knowledge you need/desire, especially on such a complex topic. This book however does a phenomenal job of demystifying the subject and giving a good, practical understanding of how DNS and BIND work.I would highly recommend this book to anyone, whether it be the new network/sys admin who has just had complex networking needs dropped on his lap, or even the seasoned network admin who needs a good convenient reference on occasion.

A solid reference to those that work in the DNS, Internet world

Review

“A searing critique of the rehab industry.”—Psychotherapy Networker“As always, Dr. Dodes offers a humane, science-based, global view of addiction. The Sober Truth is an essential, bracing critique of the rehab industry and its ideological foundations that we have much to learn from.”—Gabor Maté M.D., author of In The Realm of Hungry Ghosts: Close Encounters With Addiction“Like Breaking Addiction and The Heart of Addiction, The Sober Truth makes an important contribution to the field by raising central questions about how treatment and self-help programs operate and whether commonly used treatments for addiction are effective. Dodes and Dodes thoughtfully and rigorously trace the history of alcohol treatment and the role of such treatment within the “rehab” setting. Perhaps most importantly, The Sober Truth examines the failure of science to provide answers to fundamental questions about addiction treatment. People struggling with addiction deserve more than science has provided, and The Sober Truth should stimulate a fundamental dialogue that can move the field forward. Finally, and not to be missed, this book also serves as a treatment guide for anyone seeking help with their own or a loved one’s alcohol use.”—Howard J. Shaffer, Ph.D., Associate Professor, Harvard Medical School; Director, Division on Addiction, The Cambridge Health Alliance“Lance Dodes and Zachary Dodes have the guts to take on clearly, perceptively, and with solid scientific grounding the nude king of American addiction treatment: AA and the 12 steps. Not only do these shibboleths yield no benefit for the mass of alcoholics and addicts in America, they leave cold—even harm—far more people than they help. Read this book!”—Stanton Peele, Ph.D., author of Recover!“Provocative, illuminating, persuasive, and lucid, The Sober Truth will enrage some, reassure others, but inform all. The Dodes's write beautifully (so rare in this field), and they also hold fast to common sense (also rare) while backing up their contrarian statements with utterly convincing evidence. Read this book before committing to any 12-step course of treatment, then decide for yourself.”—Edward Hallowell, M.D., author of Answers to Distraction and Superparenting for ADD

I am 34 years old and have struggled with addiction for the past 15 years. It culminated with the loss of job, home, large retirement savings, many friends and family. I studied extensively to try to figure this stuff out on my own but continued to fail. Mind you i have numerous professional accreditations, degrees, and am of very high intelligence. Many of my friends referred to me as the "smartest and dumbest person they'd ever met." It was a weird statement to take pride in but I did as I knew it to be true. I simply could not abstain from drunken or drug induced outrageous behaviors including arrests, wild sexual parties, expensive damage to professional and personal reputation. It plagued every relationship I entered to the point where I became infamous.I entered a 90 day treatment facility and benefitted from some of the stuff we did there but if i ran the cost/benefit analysis or measured it based on the time commitment the results were pathetic. Most of this was due to the sheer insanity of the 12 step mentality, and the bogus "disease model of addiction" which i knew going into treatment was based on faulty reasoning and industry profits. This book walks you through all the stages of addiction studies and why they are inaccurate and then targets the true underlying causes of addiction. It tells the merits of rehab and 12 step based groups then provides valuable insight as to what these groups lack. An absolute must read for anyone serious about beating addiction.

When I read the first chapter, I had the feeling like I could have written it. I am a psychologist who worked with parolees, and when I'd get a referral involving a substance abuser, it would be as a last resort, after traditional AA programming had failed. The philosophy in this book works, & I have seen it work many times.

This book is of course, correct. It rightfully debunks the myth that god-programs of the 12 steps come even close to qualifying as "treatment." But people have been debunking this myth for decades now, and I've seen nothing change. The U.S. "treatment" centers are still overwhelmingly based in faith-healing, even though faith-healing has long since fallen out of fashion as a type of legitimate treatment. For every other medical issue, we do not tell people to get better by praying to the skydaddy to rescue them, yet this is what the 12 steps are based upon. I'm frustrated reading the same work over and over again, and seeing nothing change. The Sober Truth is accurate, full of explanations as to why god-programs and faith-healing do not work (what a shocker!) and contains some interesting personal stories. But this book is not ground-breaking or full of particularly new information; indeed, the most sober truth about the matter is the sad fact that a book like this still needs to be written and read, because the U.S. is so stubbornly steadfast in its make-believe ideas that addiction is a moral failing marked by "character defects" and the solution is a-higher-power-god-skydaddy-rescuer. No wonder addiction is an epidemic in this country.

In 160 pages of text, don’t expect this book to be a literature review of studies relating AA to treatment receptivity and treatment outcome, although it does offer some representative examples. I found The Sober Truth less of a polemic against AA than Rational Recovery. Both books seriously undermine AA claims to effectiveness and minimization of its religious underpinnings. The Sober Truth further overviews the marketing of AA by its proponents to the front lines of popular treatment without much empirical evidence to support its efficacy.Until I read this book I did not know that AA took its famous twelve steps directly from a fundamentalist religious organization founded in the early twentieth century. I did not know that Bill W. even after he stopped drinking was a heavy consumer of cigarettes and coffee, was serially unfaithful to his marital partner and experimented with hallucinogenics. I did not know E.M. Jellinek, the originator of the disease model of alcoholism, eventually distanced himself from the conceptualization. I did not know that five US circuit Courts of Appeals ruled against mandatory referral to twelve-step-based treatment on the basis that there is “no doubt” that AA meetings are “intensely religious events.”As a practicing psychologist with over thirty years of experience, I’ve certainly seen AA proponents and detractors along the way, including a subgroup of proponents who recoil at the religious infrastructure. Moreover, I am attuned to the paucity of adequately designed research published in peer-reviewed journals after the 70+ years AA has been around that demonstrates utility much above chance levels. Even the COMBINE study published by JAMA in 2006 comparing medical management (e.g., naltrexone) with “combined behavioral intervention” lumps “twelve-step facilitation” with cognitive behavioral therapy, motivational interviewing and support system involvement rather than as a stand-alone treatment. If it is so effective, why is it not considered as an independent variable? The fact is it is not very effective as a stand alone intervention with success rates estimated between 5-10%. Even “success” is variously defined. Is it percentage of days abstinent from baseline? Is it the reduction of drinks per day?The authors propose an alternative approach to understanding and treating alcoholism. They assert the psychological function of addiction is to reverse a sense of overwhelming helplessness and that every addictive act is a substitute for more direct behavior. The reversal of helplessness is a function of addiction and the powerful drive behind addiction is rage at that helplessness. Alcoholism is treated as a displacement (substitute behavior) that can be reversed through psychodynamic psychotherapy aimed at understanding, managing, and learning about oneself so the direct action can be undertaken without being seen as either impossible or forbidden. Addiction as a misguided quest for empowerment is possible, even plausible. However, these assertions are offered without proof, without citations from peer-reviewed journals – suffering from the same weaknesses with which the authors indict AA. Anecdotal data is weak data prone to selection bias, accuracy limitations of self-report, mistaking correlation for causation, among many other things that limit its utility. Maybe that is in one of their other books. In this book, case study method offered (P. 157) as “the only way to describe [psychodynamic] treatment” would be anecdotal as well.I quibble with the authors’ contention (P. 124) that any AA group should be interchangeable with another AA group if the twelve steps were the active treatment components for addiction. Any psychotherapist who has done theme-based groups (e.g., divorce groups) or treatment-based groups (e.g., cognitive behavioral therapy) understands each group has its own “personality” regardless of conceptual constancy because of the different personalities involved..Any treatment of alcoholism and other addictions may be considered successful if the individual lives a life in which there are no longer negative consequences, broadly defined, as a result of the behavior whether abstinence or temperance is achieved.Would you take a medicine wherein ~69% discontinued use due to unacceptable side effects within a year and only 5 to 10% of those who used the medication found relief from symptoms – a rate not appreciably different from spontaneous remission (those who discontinue substance abuse without treatment)? That is the analog to AA as well as the question posed by this book.
