First, I would like to thank counselorchick, Kevin Johnson, bankee and any others who have obvious resentments towards AA. It is a program developed in the 1930’s and has been the most effective treatment for their members. It is a fellowship of men and women who have the same desire to stay sober. People who follow the program and commit to it eventually become happy, joyous and free. The program has evolved over time to what it is today. People who are cursed with this disease are NOT able to drink in moderation. I am not saying that I completely believe in the entire philosophy but most of it has merit. I think it is opalling and disgraceful for anyone to blame AA for hurting more people than they’ve helped! Are you f*****g kidding me? There is only one person to blame for the behaviors we exubed. Look in the mirror for the guilty party. The negativity in these posts truly proves how restless, irritable and discontent you are. I’m sure there are other programs that successfully help those with the disease of addiction. AA is not for everyone. It is also never AA’s fault when someone relapses. We are still there at every meeting, trying to help the next sick and suffering person.Your portrayal of the “program” is flawed and inaccurate to say the least. There have been 100’s of thousands of people who are now happy, joyous, free and living a life free of anger, depression, sadness and fear.

Simpley put this book will save your life and inspire you to find a path free of addiction . The first half of the book is how it works in AA the second half is all inspirational stories that truely do inspire you to live a better free of addiction life. Often at first when I first considered I might have an addiction problem I read the stories in the back of the book . I found every story I read was about me in some way . After a few reads I knew it was time to confront my addiction issues . Becuse of this book I am now free of my alcohol addiction and starting to piece my life back together . Any time I feel weak or need a bit fo inspiration I open the book and read for a while .This book is the back bone to AA and 12 step programs it will sve your life if you are honest ans willing . Its said you must hit rock bottom before you can make the journey to recovery but maybe if you read this book you will find a way that you can avoid the horor of the rock bottom experience. Good luck to you may you find the peace and serenity you so deserve in life give this book a shot and you will find a new way of life .

I'm not an alcoholic, but a good friend of mine suggested that I read this to gain a better understanding of "what she's all about." I'm truly glad I did. Not only did it deliver on her claim in spades, but it provided me with one hell of a perspective on everything she and so many others have dealt with, and just how vital a group like Alcoholics Anonymous is. I love reading things that provide me with that level of insight.

I’ve been sober almost six months. Thank god for AA and other such programs.About this book- it explains everything. First half talks about how AA came to be and last half shares inspirational stories of other addicts and alcoholics who have worked the program and now lead sober lifestyles. Very helpful and motivating.For anyone out there struggling with addiction, even if you aren’t ready to seek help, read this book. You at least will know you aren’t alone.

I'm so grateful for this book. My sweet daddy suffered from alcoholism and died unrecovered. Growing up in that, I had a lot of resentment and unresolved pain. This book showed me that my Dad was sick, and it helped me see that even though I do not drink- I was effected by alcoholism. Since I do not have this allergy/disease, I didn't understand it. It makes more sense to me now, and it has helped me on my healing journey. I cannot recommend this enough! I know you get audio chapters on Amazon (I believe it is the 1st Edition). I love the 4th edition. I believe it is worth buying even if you can hear it for free.

Don't get the Kindle version if you need to refer to page numbers. Cryptic "locations" (see pic) will not help if you want to use the "Big Book" for any serious work or study. There are plenty of free or online versions available that are paginated. As far as the actual content goes, who am I to argue with the cornerstone manuscript for a fellowship that has proven to help millions worldwide. IMHO modern medicine will never be able to come close to this free and ubiquitous prescription for dealing with ALL addictions (in MY lifetime at least).

Written many years ago and still relevant for todays alcoholic. I felt the book was telling my story and many times I was struck by the economy and perfection of the prose. i.e. 'a vision for you.' In my opinion this is very much an inspired novel that speaks directly to the alcoholic and offers a proven method of recovery and life seemingly beyond the reach of the active alcoholic....Indispensable information for the suffering alcoholics looking for recovery.

I was very disappointed that they showed images of a first edition big book published in 1946 (4 images) Also in the description, it clearly says it was published January 1st, 1946. But when it arrived, it was a reproduction (copy) of a 1st edition. If I could give 0 stars I would. Very misleading and deceptive. Still working on trying to get refunds. I bought 4, ($266.00 total) and have only been refunded for 3. Bad seller!!!!!

Manjiro and his fellow fishermen find refuge on a remote island after a storm destroys their ship. When they are rescued by an American whaleboat captain and given the chance to return home with him, Manjiro accepts the offer. His encounters with a land that he has been taught is barbaric and his subsequent efforts to return to Japan shape him into an admirable character. Preus places readers in the young man's shoes, whether he is on a ship or in a Japanese prison. Her deftness in writing is evident in two poignant scenes, one in which Manjiro realizes the similarities between the Japanese and the Americans and the other when he reunites with his Japanese family. A sailor named Jolly and an American teen express the racism he experiences in America. Both of these characters gain sympathy from readers as their backgrounds are revealed, and as one of them comes to respect Manjiro. The truths he learns about himself and his fellow men and women are beautifully articulated. Manjiro's own drawings are well placed throughout the narrative and appropriately captioned. This book is a wonderful story of a young Japanese man and his introduction to many new worlds. I learned so much about whaling and Japanese culture as I read. I loved the innocence of the main character: how open he was to the new ideas and experiences he came across. The characters and relationships that develop over the course of many years not shallow in the least. The fact that this is a true story (with actual drawings by the real main character displayed throughout the story) makes it all the better. This was in no way a quick read. Nonetheless, I was unable to end my day without picking up where I had left off and gently moved through the story. I will be adding it to our daughters' reading as we study Japan later this school year.

Very interesting, well researched, gave an intriguing description of survival and life on the high seas when whaling ships roamed the Pacific Ocean.Based on a true story of the lives of four Japanese teenagers. who eventually made an impact on US and Japan relations. Excellent reading for children and adults alike.

Read this to my 6 year old for bedtime over the course of a few days. He enjoyed it very much and wanted me to read several chapters every night. The chapters are very short and include what looks to be actual pictures drawn by Manjiro, the main character of the story. Good book for any child's library.

When Manjiro and his coordinates are finally rescued by an American whaling ship it opens his eyes to a world hidden to him by the Japanese government. Set over a decade,spent in America, Japan and in Margi Preus expresses the feelings of curiosity and eventual world changing decision making, as he pursues his dream of becoming a samurai despite his background. It deals with the topics of race and hereditary status, family and pursuing your dreams in Margi Preus’ brilliant debut novel Heart of a Samurai.

Heart of a Samurai is a great read for middle grade readers who think they don't like historical fiction. It is the story of a Japanese boy shipwrecked on an island in the South China Sea, rescued by an American whaling ship,trained to be a harpooner, then brought to the USA to be raised in MA by the ship's captain and educated in elite Massachusetts schools. It is based on the story of Manjiro, the first Japanese to step foot in North America, who as an adult returned to Japan and helped bring an end to Japanese isolationism. The story is adventure filled, but also realistically shows the racist attitudes and harsh working conditions for laborers during the 1800s. The descriptions of whale hunting are realistic enough to be stomach turning.

the author is a true artist in her descriptions of flora and fauna, places, the anatomy of the whaling ship, and her character arcs...bought it for my grandkids then purchased one for myself..

While the book is a fictional account of a true story, it opens your eyes to a history not well known. I had no idea that Japan's ports had been closed to the outside world for over 250 years. I had assumed that Japan had always been technologically advanced. This book will give the reader the desire to read more about Japan and her fisherman samurai. This is a must read! A great book club choice. It will open the group's knowledge. Our hostess served sushi and bean cakes.

I was and am thoroughly delighted to have read this book. It is not often, I find, that an author is so aptly able to bring an extraordinary character to life, fill in the emotions and moods of non-fiction, and tell a great story at the same time. As a teacher, I found this book to be perfect for class reading and discussion. I can already envision my students growing excited by the plot and intoxicated by the beautiful words. I highly recommend anyone of all ages to read this wonderful story.

If you are looking for a somewhat substantial cookbook with pictures,more direction or descriptions, you may be disappointed. The book is small and very basic and seems more like a self-published 61-page public relations booklet on Chinese cooking than other cookbooks you may have. Just received this so I cannot vouch for the quality of the recipes at this time.

This is a waste of time and money. The table of contents has no page numbers and neither does the book. The recipes are skechie and the directions leave alot to be desired. As a somewhat of a cook I could easily make these dishes better without this book. I bought it as a gift for my son along with a wok and all the accessories but it's so useless I'm going to send it back. Don't waste your money

After not doing math for 10 years I needed a major refresher for college since I failed the math entrance exam. I will have to take three remedial math courses but with this book I am actually sitting here doing algebra! I will be ready to retake the exam and place in college algebra. I also bought the workbook and the next level algebra books.

This is a good basic textbook to prepare students for algebra. I purchased this to use during the summer with my son, to sharpen his skills when he was out of school and to prepare him for Algebra I in the fall. He's doing well in math this year, so it was a good purchase.

It just sits on my night stand. Learning things from it only seems to happen if you spend time using it.

The book fit the description. My child said that it explained the concepts very clearly and in a way that was easy to understand. It was a great deal: Barnes and Nobles was selling it for around $90.00. It was in great condition, even for a used book categorized as good. Pre-Algebra Sold by allamericantextbooks

As a history teacher I enjoy the well researched historical novel which author Jack Whyte masters with few better. From that perspective I enjoyed coverage of the daily ins and outs of the people who lived at the time period. Was shocked that King Richard the Lionhearted had some peculiar appetites which I will not reveal. But as the story evolved and the character experienced the milieu of which he was part I began to wonder if the book would ever end. Could have done the story justice with half as many pages. It seemed like an endless journal rather than a novel. Have read dozen and a half of Whyte's books - this only one which I was not fully thrilled with the read , just too long with no purpose for it.

Well, it turns out most of the reviews were right.I hugely enjoyed the first book of the series, so bought this one (#2). And now, at end, I've been trying to fathom exactly why Jack Whyte actually wrote it.The best I can believe is that he wanted a novel that depicts what daily conversations between knights were like in the middle ages. Literally page after page after page after page after page after page after page after page of conversation. Interesting characters appear, like Saracen assassins, but we only get the barest introductions to them. Battles are a one or two page affair.Furthermore, if you are hoping for a novel with cool Templar or secret society ("Sion") action or scenes, you were be totally disappointed. There is almost none.I will not be buying the third book of the series and do not recommend this one.

Book two in a three book series is as exciting as the other two. The author uses historical facts with fictional license to create the vivid world of the Knights Templar. I found it difficult to put down.

Good historical writer, well researched and very nicely done tale of the Knights Templar. Need all three for the whole story .Painless history lessons suitable for youngsters too ! Reasonably accurate as best I can tell.

This book is adventure into the 3rd crusade where the reader lives this horrific event in every detail. True to its title, the heart of this story is the display of honor in its most exemplary form. I recommend it to readers who enjoy exploring the higher qualities of the human spirit.

Very good book and could not put it down

I am still reading "Standard of Honor" and enjoying every second of it. Can't wait to finish so I can read "Order in Chaos" I have never read any of Jack Whyte's books before i started the "trilogy" but now I will be looking for more!!!

I bought the whole series before reading any, a mistake
