This is a very good book. I've had other travel books on Nicaragua and Central America and this is, by far, the best. I also found it to be very accurate. I was quite surprised. Outstanding.

Joshua Berman & Randy Wood have not left a pueblo unexplored nor a beach missed. IF you are going visit only Nicaragua, this is the guide to take with you. If, perchance, you will visit other countries as well, then my first choice is "Footprint's Cental America Handbook"Every city, town and beach I visited in Nicaragua was covered. I found their recommendations for accommodations, food and other service in the guide to be "right on". In our technology connected world the authors have the web addresses and/or email addresses for most hotels (not the hostels). Great.Very important for those planning to study Spanish in Nicaragua, this guide has a great rundown of most of the schools in various cities. This section is a must read before selecting a school (I speak from experience).I do need to point out the poetic license that is taken by the authors. The authors describing place with magniloquent words, that when the guide is held up to the reality of the place it is not half as wonderful as they say. Their writing on Leon is a great example. They write that being in Leon can give you an "exotic feeling" like the "one gets by walking down the cobble stone streets by colonial buildings". If and when you visit Leon you will be there a long, long time looking for that feeling and that street of cobbled stones. Maybe they meant "asphalt streets with pot holes".Although the guide is copyrighted 2003 I found that information regarding new hotels, restaurants and bars stopped at or around 2000. However, the authors introduction section (economy, government etc.) is through 2001. Do note, the upper priced hotels (over $100) only get the mention of their nameAnd how do you make a very good guide - GREAT!? Well, more maps and better maps, especially of Managua, would be a great place to start. The guide has information about many sites of interest with corresponding maps to help you navigate. Also, there is NO section that recommends books or videos. There is no list of foreign embassies to help a traveler locate their embassy in Managua. Finally, the crime is rising in Managua, but only in Managua, and the guide does not address this.These things said, I still strongly recommend this book. This guide and the excellent 'In Focus - Nicaragua' (see my review) should be in your hand before you go.

The above title says it all. I'm an experienced world traveler and have used a number of different guidebook series in many different countries and regions, including Lonely Planet, Let's Go, Moon, and Rick Steves'. The country-specific Moon Handbooks for Central America are hands-down the most superior guidebooks I have ever used. They are written by people who have lived in the countries and know about all kinds of hidden treasures that aren't mentioned in other guidebooks, and the information tends to be much more in-depth than in other guidebooks I've used. I won't go on since the other reviewers cover the high points of Moon's Nicaragua Handbook. All I can say is if you're going to Nicaragua, get this guidbook! You won't be disappointed.

I used to use the Lonely Planet Guidebooks for my travels in Central America. As good as they are, Josh Berman and Randy Wood's "Moon Handbooks: Nicaragua" is the class of the field.The two have done an excellent job of researching, exploring almost every nook and cranny of this amazing country. It is very thorough and factually correct.Beyond that, it is written with great respect for the land and its people, giving them the respect they deserve. They tell of the heroic struggle the Nicaraguans pass through every day, just to survive--and survive they do. The authors give the reader ample information the civic self-help organizations the people have created for themselves and their neighbors--and how to volunteer to help.If you want to know the real Nicaragua, buy this book.

This is not only the best guidebook for Nicaragua, this is the best guidebook, bar none, of any I have ever read for any location on the planet(and I've read lots). Berman and Wood have not only done their homework about where to go, they've included well-written segments on regional history, geography, culture, language, people-watching, environmental concerns, infrastructure availability, volunteer opportunities in addition to very well documented sources with contact information when appropriate. I have never read a guidebook with such complete information (and clearly-understood, clever writing) until this one. Even if you don't plan on travelling to Nicaragua, this book is highly recommended reading.

I have read most of the reviews here on this publication and two things strike me as odd. First are the reviews that complain about everything in this book and end up saying that it is basically trash. Second are the ones that bow to it as if it is the holy grail and praise it as the best thing since sliced bread. What is the truth?? Well, let me say this about that. We need to be aware (constantly aware..) that these reviews are opinion pieces. They are highly subjective in nature and as such must be read and assimilated with an open (and reasonable..) mind. If you are to have faith in a review it must be credible, and still allow for the possibility that another opinion may be different. As a writer and an editor, my mantra has always been "a reasoned response from a reasonable mind." And you, the reader, should take what is written and use it....along with your own reasoned thoughts....to form your own opinion. So,....the truth?? The truth is that both sides of this argument have merit, and a reasonable conclusion puts the "correct" rating somewhere in the middle between them.I started reading this type of book in the early 1960's. I read a lot of them...every year. This book is definitely one that should be on your list of books to own...especially IF you don't already have a prior issue. If you have an earlier one, then maybe you should wait...I purchase this 'encyclopedia' about every third issue. I find that is frequent enough for my use.Before I started writing this review, I went back and reviewed a couple of my earlier issues of COTW. I was hoping to find out where specific errors originated. What I found is a mish-mash of errors and editing boondoggles existed in the earlier volumes as well. So,...Is this one worse than previous issues?? I think the problems are slowly getting worse (or at least more visible..). The main reason for this, the more often something is read and written, and re-written, and re-edited, the more chances for additional errors to creep into the work. So, as some others have noted, things that in past issues were not notable have devolved into problems...largely editing errors. Some of these things do not really bother me that much. Misplaced photos, spelling errors, grammatical inconsistencies, and "lost" pages, all fall into this category. Sure, they detract from the overall experience, but in the larger context these are usually not fatal errors. The way I look at it is this: Imagine the time and effort required to get a book this large ready to go to press----and since it is largely fact based, not an opinion piece, the error checking protocols must be tremendous......To even imagine a complete re-write of this book boggles the mind.What is needed here is an effort to re-write the parts that need it and edit carefully....the whole book. This would require the efforts of proof-readers for text and readability, and others familiar with the content for fact checking and inclusion. This would be a BIG, BIG effort!! Would it be worthwhile doing?? I don't know. But it IS needed.Having said all of that, this book remains one of the authoritative works on firearms cartridges. This is largely because most of the work was done earlier and only "updates" have happened since then. This is also why this work needs to be renewed. I like this book. I always have. I enjoy reading it (even if it does give me a headache sometimes..). AND, there is a tremendous amount of useful information inside this binding. It is just getting a little harder to sort through it all.So, if you don't already own one of these books, you should probably get one. If you already own the 10th or 11th edition maybe you should skip this one. If all you have is an early edition, then this new edition will definitely add some value to what you already have. As a point of general interest, I have recently taken to reading a new publication Ammo Encyclopedia, 3rd edition. I have found it to be a rather nice counterview to COTW and well worth reading. I notice now that there is a newer version available as well.. 4th Edition The Ammo Encyclopedia. If you own one of these in addition to COTW, you will probably have everything you will ever need.So, 3 stars for the book COTW. With proper editing and more attention to detail would be 5 stars.

I have owned a copy of Cartridges of the World for decades. I buy a new edition every 3 or 4 years since new cartridges are coming out very frequently. I have found this handbood to be an extremely comprehensive source for all things "ammo". This book is for shooters, hunters, collectors, law enforcement and anyone having an interest. It fun just browsing through the book. New, current, obsolete, foreign, military, proprietary, wildcat, rifle, handgun, centerfire, rimfire; it's all there. For those contemplating acquiring a rifle or handgun, it helps to know what rifle or handgun would be satisfactory for the intended purpose. All in all, it's a terrific book if the subject matter is one of casual or serious interest. Highly rrecommended, worth the price.

This is a great product but lacks info on such newer cartridges as 300 Blackout. Note that documentation on stuff like that, 6.5 grendel, 6.5 creedmoor, 6.8 SPC, and other newer possible "wildcats" cartridges may require a newer version. It also lacks significant ballistic analysis, but that's not what this book is for.It's an encylopedia, basically. It has info on old, rare Japanese cartridges and other cool stuff. By that measure, it succeeds. If you fancy yourself a ballistic scientist or 1000+ yard shooter, try something else.

I'm sure the older editions of this book contained some unsubstantiated opinions here and there, but at least they were readable and reasonably well organized. This latest edition is screwy both for what has been changed, and for what hasn't been updated. As others have noted, some of the pages are out of order, and possibly missing. The handgun cartridges are now divided into "current" and "obsolete" sections, OK, but the "current" section lists such popular numbers as 8mm Rast-Gasser, 8mm Lebel and .455 Webley Automatic while the "obsolete" section has the ancient .221 Fireball and .357 Maximum.I noted a few of the cartridge illustrations were wrong. Most astonishing was the .378 Weatherby Magnum photo heading up the .38-40 info.It seems to me that some cartridges that were in my older edition are missing now... the Finnish 6.3mm rimmed sporting cartridge being one. I want MORE information, not LESS.I think the time has come to honor Frank Barnes for his past service, fire Layne Simpson as editor, and totally re-write this entire book with a new author.

I got this book because I am interested in how we became who we are today. The author uses a series of entertaining and well-presented chapters to answer this question. In a series of bite-sized, entertaining pieces that likely are taken from her class lectures, Dr. Lee artfully uses anecdotes to present man-kind's history. It is easy to connect these lessons with who we are today. The ease of reading is such that one might do the whole, little book in one reading. Or, take a bite every evening before bed. In the end you'll better understand yourself and others, even those on other continents and beliefs.This is a book for all ages . Teen-aged children will find it as interesting as adults.Gert this book. You will not be disappointed, quite the opposite!!

A well written, interesting collection of essays. Explanations of various aspects of human evolution that are usually not covered very much in a more traditional approach to the topic. Highly recommended.

Clearly and engagingly written account of research and findings on the origins of humans

I think my first caution about this book is that the chapters are very episodic. I.e., they just seem to cover random topics as they occur to the authors. Now, some of these are very good. At the same time, some of them just seem a little off.In fact, some of them - and some of the writing - seem to be just special interests of the authors. Not the kind of stuff that would go into what seemed like a very general survey.In addition, she seems to always want to center things around herself. Now, this is usually fine - it can add a little interest to dry material. This time, though, it seemed a little overdone. The tie-ins also seemed a little forced.Finally, I found the writing rather flat. Now, the authors do do a good job of writing for a lay readership. The style was just a little repetitious, drawn out, and rather blah.Sorry If I'm a little critical. The book's not bad at all. It definitely doesn't deserve all 4's.

Philosophers wanted to answer this question. Scientists wanted to answer this question. Poets and novelists also wanted to answer this question. We have made many theories and hypothesis, We probably know more than our ancestors did, as we have gathered a significant body of knowledge about ourselves. But, the efforts to know about ourselves are still ongoing. This book reveals that the heart of anthropology is nothing but pursuing the quest to answer the key question. And, the author did an awesome job at igniting a spark in readers' mind. If you haven't thought about this fundamental question for a while, take this book and read through. You will realize soon that you are taking an joyful journey to ask the question again.The author does not simply go through the history of human evolution. Her journey starts from us, the modern humankind, Homo Sapiens. Why are human fathers different from males of other animals? Why does human live so long to have grandchildren? Why do we have different skin colors? Then, she brings on various anthropological archeological data. She also goes over how our view of humankind has overcome the Eurocentric view in the colonial era through scientific research, which I enjoyed particularly. Her storytelling is like having a chat with friends over lunch. It is casual and fun and so easy to digest. Every chapter is sprinkled with fun facts and thought-provoking questions. Still, she never loses scholastic rigor. She makes you think and re-examine scientific evidence with her. Sometimes, you will get a new insight. Sometimes, you will question a belief you have kept for a long time. At the end of this journey, you will think of yourself in a different way. Hats off to the author!

Good food but not simple at all. Every recipe seems to call for soaking overnight or using a sauce from the book which takes extra time. It is in no way shape or form simple meals unless you modify and skip the sauce or spice but than where's the flavor? If you want to make food when you are hungry this is a frustrating book. It is more for meal prep planned out days ahead.

The kindle version of this book it useless. There are no sections, chapters, or index- no way to find recipes except to flip through every page, which with a physical book is annoying but doable, with a kindle impossible and aggravating.

I can't say enough good things about Matt Frazier. Together with Stepfanie Romine, they have written a fantastic plant-based cookbook that's centered on the athletic diet. You don't need to be an athlete to enjoy these dishes and the 100+ recipes aren't rehashes of the same old vegan mac and cheese (although the roasted red pepper version on p. 117 is fantastic!).Let's start in the middle of The No Meat Athlete Cookbook with a dozen dressings along with a blueprint for unlimited dressing design. Sauces and dressings are key to variety when eating a plant-based diet and their use isn't limited to salads. They can instantly transform a wide range of steamed, grilled, or baked vegetables into a satisfying and tasty meal. One thing that's obvious when dropping meat out of one's diet is that it's mostly just a delivery system for sauce - people don't eat boiled meat. When one spends as much time preparing vegetables as they do creating marinades for flesh, an entire world opens up to those who previously only seasoned veggies with butter and salt.I've been interviewed for podcasts by both Matt and Rich Roll (who wrote the forward) and these guys are amazing athletes. If one thinks that authentic athletic performance isn't possible on an all-plant diet, they are evidence that's an err in reason. They log thousands of miles and both of them "run on plants." Chapter 4 is loaded with recovery meals and Chapter 7 has a wide range of smoothies, energy bars, and rehydration drinks. The calorie bomb cookies at nearly 6000 Calories/batch should be good for 60 miles. The recipes are centered on whole foods and they provide for oil free options if extra Calories aren't on your training roadmap. This isn't a diet book, nor is it centered on ideology. Matt has been among the best bridge builders I've seen in the eat meat/don't eat meat worlds. He has strong personal beliefs and yet he never guilts and shames. I applaud that approach. He's a winner on all fronts.If you're an athlete and thinking about going plant-based, this book has enough content to assure you won't wither away nor will performance lag. If you're ready to branch out into some new areas of plant-based cooking, Stephanie adds some roadmaps for fun and variety with amazing recipes and meal plans.It's definitely a great resource for everyone!

I liked the other version, it gave the nutritional value after the recipe. Also, i preferred the organization of the other book by the same author, seemed less clutter.

I really like the idea of this book, and the foreword is a really great intro to vegan eating and cooking, however a lot of the meals are complicated (multi-step type recipes where 1 recipe might reference 2-3 other recipes in the book that you also have to make for sauce, etc) and the flavors of a lot of the recipes just aren’t my taste. So far I’ve enjoyed ~40% of the recipes I have made from this book

I absolutely love this cookbook! It has tons of great recipes with ‘normal’ ingredients that most people actually keep on hand. Plus the recipes are pretty easy and quick to prepare which is great for my active lifestyle when I don’t have hours and hours to spend everyday cooking. Also, I love that this book has lots of photos of the foods. For me, that is a big thing in a cookbook when I see a photo and it looks amazing, if course it makes me want to cook it more then just seeing the ingredients. I bought 3 vegan cookbooks so far and this one is by far my favorite so I highly recommend it to anyone even if you aren’t vegan!

About the Author

An early adopter of additive manufacturing and an innovator in the 3D printing space, Clifford Smyth was born in Fairbanks, Alaska, in 1968. He attended local schools and the University of Alaska - Fairbanks. Starting out with an early interest in technology, his first exposure to computing was using his mother's account on the University of Alaska mainframe. Learning some rudimentary Fortran, he "appropriated" system time from other users by gaining unauthorized access to the system database in order to satisfy his hunger for computing resources. Reflecting on this, he has mentioned that "at the time, it might not have been a felony", and that anyway, he was “9 at the time, and didn't get caught.” He refined his coding skills on an Ohio Scientific C28P he purchased with the help of his older brother in 1979. Writing mostly video games and simple bytecode interpreters, he went on to write and market a simple database application for the Timex-Sinclair 1000 home microcomputer under his in-house software publishing company "SmythSoft" in 1982. This was not a commercial success. Mr. Smyth currently divides his time between homes in Alaska and the Caribbean, writing books about subjects that intrigue him and pretending to farm coffee and avocados on a modest plantation on the island of Hispaniola. An admirer of Neal Stephenson, Dewey Lambdin, George MacDonald Fraser, William Gibson, and Tom Robbins, to name a few, he hopes one day to write books that are not as he puts it, “very, very badly written”. "Functional Design for 3D Printing" is truly what it says on the tin: it'll teach you to design 3D-printed parts that function in the real world. Most books with "3D printing" anywhere in the title are mostly fluff; 3D printing is great, rah rah, here's how to print desk toys. Most mechanical design books, on the other hand, are math-heavy textbooks.This book hits the middle ground just right. It focuses on pragmatic advice for designing useful parts that are strong enough to work in real-world applications. Topics such as infill, part orientation, overhangs and support, and other design considerations specific to FFM (fused filament manufacturing) are covered in great detail. While it's technical stuff, Smyth backs up his explanations with examples and diagrams rather than equations--this book is very much focused on pragmatism over theory.Some other reviewers fuss about the book being short. That's a plus in my opinion; I don't want to read a 400 page book when a 200 page book will do. This book is compact but, as far as useful information content is concerned, it hits way above its weight. If only other writers valued their reader's time so much.In sum, if you're looking to move past desk toys and use 3D printing for real stuff, this is the book for you.

My problem with this book is that the content is really great, but the graphics and the aesthetics of the book are terrible, more so than usual.Some of the images are so awfully presented that I can't get anything from them. For the most part, the images are lackluster and appear to be lo resolution, poorly formatted (aspect ratio problems), and poorly exposed/graded for black and white printing.It is a shame that this book looks so unprofessionally thrown together and that the graphics are so bad. The information is extremely good and worthwhile to have as a reference. Author should respect that his audience are a bunch of technical heads and could read a book/books on photography and publishing for visualization. Taking the time to make sure that the images are the right dpi (300 minimum) and that they can be understood easily is critical, especially for a technical primer.

Unlike many other currently available books about 3D printing, which are heavy with ra-ra encouragements about how great 3D printing is and how everyone can excel with a little effort, this book is simply page after page of useful information about the nitty-gritty aspects of actually trying to print good models. This is the kind of knowledge that beginning (and experienced) enthusiasts need to know to avoid any potential frustrations. Don't be put off by the rather short length of this book; there's more here than most other books that are hundreds of pages longer. Highly recommended.

If you're experienced at 3D printing this book will reaffirm the things you learned through trial and error, and probably teach you a few tricks you never thought of. If you're new to 3d printing, or new at designing parts that will be 3D printed, this book will save you a ton of time and materials.

Provides excellent perspective into the functional world of 3D Printing. Not going to knock any stars for the production quality of the book, but would suggest the publishers consider the full treatment on this one with high-res color imagery as well as supplemental materials. If you find this book "fits" your interests reader, then I strongly suggest his other on the same topic. I'd drop the zombie theme (I enjoyed it actually but would be concerned by those who think it somehow reduces the maturity of the content) and just consider it Vol 2: *Lean* Functional Additive Manufacturing. NOTE TO AUTHOR: I'm grateful for this work it was very accessible and I know that's not easy with complex topics. ALSO, I going to need Vol 3 Soon! just saying!

Short and to the point, this book has some great ideas for working with 3D printed designs. It clearly states the issues and provides nice real world solutions to the types of problems you can run into. I'm still a 3D printing newbie and this was a great help to me. The Kindle version suffers from poor rendering of the images, so I would go for the PDF version of the book.

Not a bad summary of design issues experienced with 3D printed parts and products. Provides some strategies for printing to promote strength in printed assemblies.Easy and quick read, with full illustrations.

I've been following Archana's recipes from her blog Ministryofcurry.com..Her recipes are simple, authentic and Instant Pot has made them easier than ever.Cooking Indian food is time consuming and needs monitoring. But with Archana's simple recipes in the Instant Pot it is possible to enjoy authentic Indian food without the fuss.My favorite recipes are Chickpea curry, Red Kidney bean curry, Paneer and vegetable biryani, Paneer in spinach sauce, cabbage rice (from her blog) and sweet rice porridge.I just received my copy of the book and I highly recommend this book as it has got recipes for breakfast, main course and desserts. She has also included recipes for some accompaniments with the main course like raitas (yogurt based side dish). It's nice to see how she has covered some of the most popular recipes across India.If you are unfamiliar with Indian cooking the book provides information on spice blends and items you need to stock in your pantry. This book belongs on your kitchen counter!

This is such a wonderful cookbook. Being from India, my mother always cooked a majority of these recipes in this book. However, when I was at the age to learn, I would watch her, and try and write down the recipes. It was a palmful of this spice, a smaller palm of this spice, etc., etc. Never did I get the exact recipe from my mother. So when I would try out various recipes I wanted to have, before getting married, there was a lot of experimentation going on in my kitchen. Enter "The Essential Indian Instant Pot Cookbook". Such wonderful recipes, all laid out clearly and easily, and in front of me, and yes I can still experiment with the spices, as my nine year old son, does not like his Indian food 'too spicy', so we always have to tone down the spices for him, but still maintain the taste.The reference at the end of the book is a great shopping list when I go to various Indian/Oriental stores, and make sure I always have the right spices I might need in the days ahead.Thank you for writing this book, and as an Indian-American (yes I am an ABCD) and for those that might not know what I mean ABCD stands for American Born Confused Desi (Indian). It makes all those recipes I tried to learn years ago, a simple task these days!

I have tried few recipes from this book. Very easy to follow and simple well explained steps. Makes delicious dishes. Normally Indian food is considered hard to cook. But this book makes it easy.I have been following Archana’s Instant pot recipes for quiet sometime @Ministry of Curry. It has made cooking for my family and hosting parties very easy ..always got great compliments !! I would say Archana Instant pot recipes makes it easy and AWESOME!!!!!!
