I wish Susan Wise Bauer had been one of my college professors! One can only benefit greatly from her writing and dedication to helping promote understanding, education, and wisdom, and helping her readers to remember who we are and why. This book was definitely a welcome addition to my bookshelves. I first experienced her writing in three huge history books: The History of the Ancient World, The History of the Medieval World, and The History of the Renaissance World, vast compediums of knowlage and many facts and personages overlooked unfortunately by today's educators in many cases. These three books, along with The Story of Western Science, should be "must" reading for the student of history, science, and the mind of humanity. I am currently hoping she addresses the history of the Reformation World next....!

While I'm only just into the beginning, I like how she leads me through the classics of science. Although I've read some of them before, I have never read them as a chronological series. BYU used to offer a distance uni class that I didn't get around to taking before they got rid of it. This, so far, has been a great substitute, sans college credit.

The Story of Western Science covers major science advancements and the people behind them in topical and then chronological order. Each is explained to make it easy for the layperson to understand. The chapters end with links to pertinent writings and books (sometimes down to the edition) to read for more information about the topic. It would be very easy to turn into a science course for a high school student or for personal enrichment. I highly recommend this book!

The author covers an amazing sweep of history, boiling down the important points and making them clear and concise. She also provides references to the source material and discusses the different editions available.

This is a fantastic introduction to the people and the books that have created the modern world. Each chapter does a great job setting the context and introducing the major primary sources of the scientific canon. Just reading the chapters is an education in the history of science and ideas. An excellent resource for teens and adults who want to understand the context of science as it has been practiced for the past 2000 years.

Fun and informative. Guaranteed to appeal to the your inner science geek. Bit of a dry read if you’re looking for entertainment but great for those who want to learn about the history scientific study. Also provides some interesting trivia about the origins of the various branches of “modern” scientific study began.

This is a great reference book. I am very much into history and enjoyed Bauer's trilogy on world history, and saw that she also authored this. It can be read from front to back, but I think it is intended more as a reference for other great works. In sum, it is a good addition to any library.

As a physician and having a close relationship with a sexual assault treatment center, this book illustrates very well the evils that are perpetrated on victims of sexual assault and abuse. Also, the addition of brainwashing makes the pain even greater. This book is a must read.

This was such a sad story, but it certainly proved that if someone dreams to have a future, even when the reality that she can is so against her, she can overcome her past & have that bright future. Misty is such a smart girl to have written this book, after having virtually no education. Highly recommended.

I questioned a lot of what might go on in an Amish community. Than I shared this book with a friend who used to be Amish. She said the author did a very good job with the truth. I was shocked. It is upsetting to me that parents (mothers, brothers, sisters) can be silenced and that's ok. NO, its not ok and I appreciate Misty Griffin doing something about it.

I could not put this book down. It was so sad what the author went through. I wanted to know what became of her after all she went through. I have read many stories about the Amish so some of this was no surprise to me. I just wish people would have helped her and believed her story when she and her sister were younger

This book was truly eye-opening. I have read dozens of Amish novels, and, I must admit, had developed a very one-sided view of Amish communities. I do hope that what Misty described is more the exception than the rule. I can hardly believe the difficulties that Misty had to go through the first 2 plus decades of her life. She is, indeed, a strong woman. I cannot fathom the level of cruelty of her mother and step-father toward Misty, Samantha, Fanny, and the Grandmother.What Misty described about the Amish is truly ironic. A person is reprimanded for a hem being one inch too short, and yet someone else can get away with terrible cruelties. I cannot imagine what it would be like to be the victim of sexual abuse and still have to live with the offender, knowing that nothing will be done.As a teacher, I want to be more vigilant in looking for signs of abuse/neglect in my students. It is hard to believe what Misty and Samantha went through all those years and no one knew.

I really enjoyed this book and it gives you insight into what may be happening in some of the Amish communities. It makes sense that women and children loose their rights when a secret society is left alone and law enforcement doesn't want to disturb them. Also if doctors are not allowed to see the bodies of girls that may have bruises all over them, and the reason they are not allowed to raise up their long dresses is because their religion doesn't allow for that, then the abuse won't be found out. I remember having a good friend who had 2 children, her 2 year old son had a terrible gash in his cheek, she told me that he had fallen on the toy box. I found out from another friend that she had backhanded her son very hard and that her ring tore his cheek. Years later when I was older I would remember how I would try to interact with her daughter, but her daughter was always quiet and didn't interact back with me. I look back now and figure that she was probably an abused child, I wish I had figured that out when I was young and gotten her children some help.

This is a story of horrific abuse and a child's strength, resourcefulness and undying hope that enables her to survive what would drive most of us to utter despair or insanity. At times her candid accounts of extremely cruel behavior by her parents or elders is very difficult to read. Ms. Griffin calls attention to the problems of child abuse, sexual abuse, elder abuse and the evil which human beings are capable of, which seems to know no bounds when left unchecked by either conscience or society. What is amazing about her story is how her own sense of morality, her faith in God and her love for others remains intact despite the most dehumanizing and frightening conditions, and how she slowly gathers the courage and strength to face down her abusers. What goes on behind closed doors and in closed communities can truly shock the senses, and I admire her ability to raise awareness about this. Her account of life in a strict Amish sect is eye-opening but very fair, as she explores the various issues she encountered in the context of her life story. Thank you, Ms Griffin, for your honesty, your love, and for holding onto your sense of hope in a way that only God makes possible.

I just finished this book. I don't remember how I came across it on Amazon, this is not a typical topic I read. At any rate, I purchased it and read it. The story of abuse starts right out of the gate-not much leading up to the craziness. I appreciated the grammatical errors as they added to her authenticity. I enjoyed reading how Misty kept putting one foot in front of the other and continued to make her own life decisions and was accountable for her thoughts and actions. She certainly has an inner fire and strength that has guided her throughout her life- giving her the courage to stand up for herself and others while suffering repercussions. She is a testament to the strength of the human spirit given so much adversity and abuse. Good on her! This world needs Misty and those like her to advocate for the truly helpless and forgotten. As Misty states in her book, the only true victims in life are children and the elderly. Keep your fire burning, Misty.

I absolutely loved the story of Jetton and Julie! It was a fun read and I couldn't put it down. Who needs sleep when you have an awesome love story to read instead, right? This book is 100% clean and I had a slap-happy grin on my face during the almost kisses - and, of course, the kisses themselves, too! - between our two love birds. Another great story from Amberlee Day!!

I really enjoyed the characters, their development, and their interaction. I appreciated hearing from both sides. It was sweet and tender mixed with fun dialogue and romantic tension. I very much enjoyed it!

The concept of the Billionaire Cove series is an intriguingly fun fantasy in its own right, but the premise of this 3rd book in the series is one I've not seen before. I've seen the kind of restaurants where families & friends can fix their meal together. What a great idea to extend it to a personal home version to build & repair family bonds with a romance for dessert!The main reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is that the attraction between the two was a little too insta-love, and felt slightly clunky, initially, but by the 2nd half of the story it had smoothed out & felt more natural.I was surprised that the story's conflict wasn't the classic one it originally appeared that the author was setting up. Which was refreshing, but it did leave me wondering about Affton - was she trying to make up for what she had done to Julie, or was she maybe trying to help her get enough new business it would get her out of Jetton's house? Or was she just clueless that Jetton was attracted to Julie? And we never find out how things ended with her & Jetton.Still, these are relatively minor quibbles, and I still very much enjoyed the story. Looking forward to the next in the series!Clean romance level: sweet kisses

Too often, books in this genre tend to be little more than a checklist of physique (too perfect male and female form), hair (color and amount), eye color, etc., with money/income too often treated like a character. THIS STORY IS NONE OF THOSE THINGS. Yes, physical description is mentioned but not belabored. Money is not flaunted or overly important. Characters are written with depth and intelligence. More importantly, the themes explored could apply to any family regardless of whether annual income is 9-figures or 5-figures - family dynamics, career roadblocks, grief, emotional limitations, internet child exploitation, struggles to overcome the past, work/life balance, and faith. This is a story with depth - all the while staying clean and sweet, and is NOT at all the typical fluff I expected to read (and immediately forget) when I borrowed the book. I've added this title to my list of books to purchase. (Oh, and kudos on using a cover model that actually looks like the character described. Well done!)

I love visiting The Cove. I enjoy cooking, so I really was intrigued by Julie showing a family how to cook and have family time together

This book was so fun! A man raising three kids after the death of his wife grows closer as they have someone come in and teach them to cook.

I want to start off by saying that I have never read any type of Manga or comic type book. So I don't know all the correct words or whatever. But I will say that I loved reading this. Clockwork Angel is one of my all time favorite books. I have re-read and listened to the audiobook so many times. I wanted to try something else, so I picked this up. I liked it so much I have already ordered the rest of this series and I am looking for more Manga books to read.I highly recommended reading the book first. if you haven't, some things might get lost in translation. I didn't miss anything because I knew exactly what was being left out but I have read a few reviews that complained about that. So take that into consideration.

The Clockwork Angel graphic novel is a book that has sort of fluttered around the periphery of my awareness for awhile now, but overwhelmed with LIFE and reading commitments this year, it was a book that managed to slip through the cracks of my over-saturated TBR. And then I finished Clockwork Princess, and was doing my post-"Ohthefeels!" ritual that follows the end of any Cassandra Clare book which consists of trawling through the TID fanart that deviantART has to offer, when I was suddenly reminded that "Hey! There's a graphic novel! Lots and lots of Will, Jem & Tessa. I think I might want it. I think I might need it."I'm always a little apprehensive of seeing a beloved story come to life visually on paper or screen. What if the characters don't look like I imagined? What if the artist/actor/director doesn't grasp the subtleties and nuances of the characters and their relationships? What if they leave out or change vital pieces of the story? What if it's just done poorly? Will it forever change my mental image of the the way I imagined the world and the characters -- the way I look at the book?It's a risk. It might suck. It's inevitable. Then, that'll suck too. And maybe.So with all of those questions and fears hovering in the forefront of my mind, what'd I think of this graphic novel?That it was awesome. HyeKyung Baek brought Tessa, Will, and Jem's stories to life beautifully and brilliantly... and sometimes terrifyingly and creepily. It's like Baek took a peek inside my mind and translated my imaginings of Shadowhunters & Co. to the page, capturing them perfectly. Sure, this version of the story is an abbreviated one, but I am impressed with how much of the story is crammed into 250+ pages, how much detail there is, how rich the character and relationship development is. I got to see with a new perspective where certain plot points had taken root, details I had missed, and tidbits I had forgotten.Also, another random observation I'll throw in for free. Being exposed to this story again helped me remember just how much interaction there was between Jem and Tessa in the first book. When I first read Clockwork Angel, I was so hung up on Will ("Aww....look how obviously and tragically tortured you are, and how you cover it up with such reprehensibly cruel behavior! Just let me love you!!!" *Elmyra hug*). I considered Jem to be a romantic foil - a distraction - to the greater love story of Will & Tessa, that I didn't really pay as much attention to Jem & Tessa's moments. They're quiet moments, but meaningful ones with a lot of depth."Oh, the feels!"Suffice it to say that reading the graphic novel makes me want to reread the original novels again now that I know things.Overall. Beautiful, gorgeous, and perfect, The Clockwork Angel graphic novel satisfied my craving to see the Infernal Devices world for myself and gave me the opportunity to live in it a little bit longer, because I'm still not quite ready to leave it just yet.

I have read the mortal instruments and infernal devices and expected to be disappointed. But I found this manga to be rather good. The art work was beautiful and most characters portrayed perfectly. Some details were askew but overall I loved it. I read in a comment that the drawing can at sometimes be "childish" but I need not see it to be so. This is because these drawings are chibi. I did not like how Henry was drawn and thought that even though Charlotte is small she should have looked older and the opposite for mortmain. He was a bit too old an ugly. I love love LOVED Jem! I never cared for will as much but I liked how they show his dark tortured side as well as his kind heart more than Cassy ever did in the first book. Even though this is in black and white the words make you see all the colors in the world of the infernal devices. Highly recommend.

I was really hoping that this book wouldn't ruin the original "Clockwork Angel" book, and I wasn't disappointed. The manga contains the entire novel, which was a huge plus for me, as I didn't want to have to buy several manga novels for one book. There were a few historical notes (The way Jessamine and Tessa wear their hair, for example) that were incorrect, but I'm a major history buff. Also, a few small notes of the book were incorrect (Like Sophie's hair color), but those weren't distracting from the beautiful style of how it was drawn. I wish that certain parts were in the novel (such as when Henry said, "Will! She Bit me!"), but they are not important to the story, so I can understand why they were cut. Over all, this is a very beautifully drawn version of one of my favorite books, and I can't wait for when the manga of "Clockwork Prince" comes out!

Haunting artwork! I understood the story via the graphic novel with more clarity than in the actual book. Concise and dramatic!

I love the TID books so of course I was excited when I found out that they were also coming out in a graphic novel. However I would advise that you pick one or the other. The reason being because I am a book person so I read the books first. And I was a little disappointed with the graphic novel it just doesn't give you the full experience. But if you are a graphic novel person then this would be perfect for you.

This is a fantastic graphic representation of the novel. I'm absolutely in love with it! The art is so beautiful and well done, everything from the character's expressions to the details of the setting, location, dress of each scene...it's just so beautifully done! I would, however, say that it's manga-style art so if you're not a fan of that you might not like this graphic novel as much as I have.They did a great job at shortening the novel for the purpose putting it in illustrated form, so for any first time readers of the story, they will be able to get the essence of the novel without missing on any of the details that make up this amazing story. For those that have already read the novel, this and the upcoming graphic novels are great companions to the books!

I truly enjoyed it and will, from now on, use it as a go-to reference not only because it's so clearly written and laid out but also, and especially because - it was written by Father Amorth, who in my opinion is the greatest exorcist of our times. I don't think the sacramental of exorcism has ever been so carefully documented and the experiences of its servants been so openly available to the public. This is a must read for all men and women of faith, not just Catholics. In our times, it's crucial, that we understand how the enemy acts and we are well-informed of how we can combat its evils... Father Amorth leaves a God-sent legacy, he is a gift of God to His Church.

Father Amorth, God Bless him, who has gone to Glory, makes sense from the often chaotic and wrong information regarding just what Satan can and cannot do to the humans who love God, the humans who do not, and those lukewarm on either side of the battlefield on earth. A must for the Christian who has a calling for the deliverance of souls from evil.

On this and related topics, readers would be best served - especially at the start - by familiarizing themselves with the Catechism and/or the Compendium of the Catechism.In An Exorcist Explains the Demonic, the late Father Gabriel Amorth warned of the "temptation of sensationalism" (p. 7), echoing Bishop Sam Aquila in his foreword to Father Jose Antonio Fortea's Interview With an Exorcist: "Although all Catholics should have a basic understanding of the reality of evil, we should also avoid being overly preoccupied with the topic of the devil. That is NOT to say that Father Amorth is any way devaluing exorcism!Those with a knee jerk skepticism about all things Catholic would no doubt be surprised by these words of Father Amorth:* "When signs appear that could be the result of an evil spell, my first advice, always, is to address the concerns to a psychiatrist" (p.84). And that is NOT to say that Father Amorth is any way being dismissive of spiritual suffering!

As an author of horror, I am fascinated by demons—especially as portrayed in movies like ‘The Exorcist,’ ‘The Conjuring,’ ‘The Conjuring 2,’ and the more comic ‘Supernatural’ television series. But as a Catholic, I am in truth terrified of the demonic. I believe they not only exist but are striving every day to win over our souls. Strong words? Well, we’re talking about the ultimate battle between Good and Evil, after all.Fr. Gabriele Amorth, who died in Rome this past September, was an exorcist and author. AN EXORCIST EXPLAINS THE DEMONIC is the first book of his I have read, and I intend to read more. I found his words to be both direct and comforting. Direct, because he doesn’t mince words when it comes to Satan. And comforting because, in the end, he offers hope for those suffering from ailments such as Possession, Vexation, Obsession, and Infestation.For authors interested in true stories of the paranormal, I can highly recommend this work. And I believe that if you’re going to write about something unfamiliar, you should research the hell out of it. For believers, Fr. Amorth offers advice on how to keep yourself safe from the forces of Evil. And for nonbelievers, the book is a fascinating read.

This is an excellent overview of the Church's teachings on the topic of the fallen angels and their power enlightened by Father Amorth' s vast experience. This book gave me insights into how to better manage my own personal spiritual life. I had quite a few "Aha!" Moments while reading it.

Fr. Gabriele Amorth is the real deal and has battled Satan and the demonic for decades until his recent passing. Well written and well worth acquiring. Fr Amorth opens the door to the reality of spiritual warfare and how to avoid getting snared in Satan's web.

About the Author

SCOTT C. SILVERMAN, Ed.D., is the Coordinator of Orientation Programs in the office of Student Life at the University of California, Riverside, his alma mater. His professional career began as a peer mentor, and later as a teaching assistant for environmental science and first-year seminar courses at UC Riverside, where he earned a BS and MS in Environmental Science. Throughout his tenure as a student, he was a heavily involved student leader and activist, having roles in multiple student organizations, student government, peer mentoring, and in community activities, including nonprofit work. While completing his MS, he started working as a graduate assistant supporting student organizations, and separately, running a campus-based community non-profit providing support services and educational programming to college students at UC Riverside, before transitioning into his current position.In 2007, Scott earned an Ed.D. in Higher Education Administration from the University of Southern California. His doctoral research on Facebook and other online social networks, “Creating Community Online: The Effects of Online Social Networking on College Student Experiences,” was chosen for the Outstanding Research Award by the National Orientation Directors Association (NODA) in 2008. Scott continues to be involved in NODA, serving on planning committees, as a regional representative and an Associate Editor of the Journal of College Orientation and Transition. Currently, he enjoys attending campus and community events with friends and family and, when the occasion arises, decking himself out in face paint and school colors on campus.FRANCES NORTHCUTT, Ed.M., is an academic advisor and admissions reader in the William E. This book had a lot of great information that parents tend to not think about. I purchased a second book for my daughter's friend as well.

Every spring I purchase a supply of this book to give out as graduation presents. I have helped coach a varsity soccer team for some years. I present this book with a personalized note to every senior at the banquet. The team loves this tradition.​

This straightforward guide is designed to help students navigate the transition to college and does a a great job! As an independent college admissions consultant, I sent it to each of my senior clients as a gift. All were thankful to receive it! Over the winter break, I even saw my son's copy open on his bed!!
