About the Author

Victor Hugo (1802–1885) was the son of a high-ranking officer in Napoleon Bonaparte’s Grand Army. A man of literature and politics, he participated in vast changes as France careened back and forth between empire and more democratic forms of government. As a young man in Paris, he became well-known and sometimes notorious for his poetry, fiction, and plays. In 1845, the year that he began writing his masterwork, Les Misérables, the king made him a peer of France, with a seat in the upper legislative body. There he advocated universal free education, general suffrage, and the abolition of capital punishment. When an uprising in 1848 ushered in a republic, he stopped writing Les Misérables and concentrated on politics. But in 1851, when the president proclaimed himself emperor, Hugo’s opposition forced him into a long exile on the British Channel Islands. There, in 1860, he resumed work on Les Misérables, finishing it the next year. With the downfall of the emperor in 1870, Hugo returned to France, where he received a hero’s welcome as a champion of democracy. At his death in 1885, two million people lined the streets of Paris as his coffin was borne to the Pantheon. There he was laid to rest with every honor the French nation could bestow.

Some, of course, are immensely difficult (they're usually just as difficult in the original) and challenge the translator's sensitivity to nuance, levels of meaning, and artistic impact in both languages. I recommend others accept the facts in plain sight, and do likewise.I stopped reading works in translation in the early 1980s, and didn't start up again until around 2005. The reason I stopped was that I concluded that I could not hear the author's voice in the translated work. The reason I started again was that Rose, Grossman, and some others showed that they understood this challenge, accepted it, and that it is possible to capture the author's voice in a translation, by actually listening to the author's intent.According to one account, the Rose translation is almost 100,000 words longer than the 1976 Denny "translation" -- that's how much material he excised from the novel to "improve it." Denny, in fact, is on record as saying that Victor Hugo was a terrible writer, and needed some "tidying up." If you're just looking to pad your reading CV with another of the "great books," then it doesn't matter which one you read. Might as well go with a shorter one. If you're looking to read the translation of Les Mis, that will make you feel like you are reading the original, hearing Victor Hugo's voice, then pick up Rose's translation.

Thank God I got the Kindle version for my Kindle Keyboard 3G. I read through 12% of the book before wondering 'how long will it take me to finish!!?". So I measured my reading speed pages-per-minute and estimated the total reading time for the entire book to be 64 hours. Seriously. So I took a different approach: I would read for an hour or two, then when fatigue started setting in, I pressed the "shift-sym" keyboard shortcut to activate text-to-speech, and just sat back or laid in bed while the kindle AI voice read it to me. This book famously takes place in France, and a lot of the names of people / places / streets are in French, so it's nice having the AI effortlessly pronounce them. My favorite was hearing it pronounce "Champs-Élysées" over and over again. It was pleasant, almost hypnotizing. Text-to-Speech allowed me to focus on the incredible story and not hassle through the pronunciations. Victor Hugo goes off on many tangents, such as 30+ page histories of the battle of waterloo, and the construction of the sewer system in Paris. It's quite fascinating and adds much to the story. There are many nuanced scenes that I continually go back to in my head, like the back passages behind the court room for transporting lawyers, and the one for transporting the criminals. And the ideas of whether a person can ever redeem themselves in society, contrasted with the situation that society is often times a poor judge of how to redeem oneself, and whether they should be deserving of redemption. It is an honest critique of criminal justice that is probably as relevant today as it was then.My understanding is that this "penguin classics" version has a better translation than the "free" version going around on the internet. It you're going to devote ~64 hours to an experience of life and death in old France, best put in a few bucks to get the best translation possible. For today's generation, the length of the story can be a bit jarring and leaves you wondering "will this story ever end?" I say this book is not at all to be treated as a story. It's not a television show. It's not a movie. It's not a musical. Les Miserables is an EXPERIENCE. So get the good version on Kindle, and have the AI voice continue the reading when fatigue starts to set in.

I am by no means a scholar . I cannot compare translations as this is the first book by Victor Hugo that I've read. After seeing the musical I decided to read the book. I'm glad that I did it in this order. Having seen the musical I did not get lost in the book's twists and turns and I had patience when the story went off into different avenues. Likewise I could selectively read the sections on history. I have always been moved by the story's theme of morality based on law versus morality rooted in love. This book is unquestionably worth reading!! The development of the characters and their struggles are so rich that I found myself crying during parts of the book. While the musical is a moving and touching story , it is nothing compared to the book itself. The best compliment I can give to a book is that touched my life and that its main characters shall live on within my heart. My life is richer for having read this book. The many sections that I have highlighted I shall revisit over and over for years to come.

It isn’t a pretentious guide to being perfect but a beautiful celebration of being your authentic, self with a splash of color and fun! Wanderful gives you a taste of what it would be like to go to specific locations and helps you plan your outfit, your playlist, and whatever survival items you would need for your next adventure.

Wanderful makes me want to throw jeans and my kimonos in a bag and hit the road! This book is insightful and witty, informative and wander-inducing!I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 because in Chapter 8, the Rock and Roll Highway, it says the The Shoals are in Birmingham, AL, like a neighborhood. The Shoals consists of three small towns about 2 hours northwest of Bham. A pretty inaccurate representation of Alabama geography.Other than that blaring mistake (to a local) the book is wonderful!

What a beautiful book!!! I have been a fan of Andi's for years and loved her first book so I have been anxiously awaiting the release for Wanderful and I am happy to say it was well worth the wait. Gorgeous photos, beautiful layout and great travel tips. I can't wait to plan the ultimate road trip using her advice.

This book is pure magic. It's like you're peeking inside all the cool spots in each city before you even visit; If you're looking for a road trip route for summer (or whenever!) that's off the beaten path, you need this book! You get a feel for the essence of each place, the style, local haunts, and stories from the people who live and love there. It's also a great convo starter piece for the coffee table for all the travelers out there.

This is the travel guide every free spirit, travel loving girl needs! I love to travel and while I love the traditional travel guides,I often find myself doing lots of digging to find treasures off the beaten path. Well Andi has saved us all a lot of time because she's done the digging for us. I love that the book shares packing and style tips along the way. And the pictures are amazing. This book will make anyone want to abandon their real life, rent an RV, and take a journey off the beaten path.

Such a cute book! Love all the photos, and small tidbits about some of the places!!

Finally a travel guide written for ME! A must have for any bohemian with a wanderlust heart. Not only is the book full of beautiful + inspiring images, the guides and tips are so on point. Planning a California coast trip with Wanderful as my guide at this very moment!

I rarely give full marks for a book based on logical criteria. This book earned its five star rating from me because: it was interesting, organized, relevant, and coherent. The author gave scientific rationale for each step in the method described, as well as giving information on technique, and addressing personal preference. I enjoyed the matter-of-fact presentation, and I learned a lot. The book also was devoid of snobbery, and seemed supportive of the new learner of the skill in brewing espresso with crema. As a home espresso roaster-grinder-brewer I know this book will be a valuable reference as i build my skills. Other thoughts: the book is succinct, clear, gives some history without becoming boring, and is not pedantic. I highly recommend this short-but-highly-informational text.

This is a very informative book that share lots of information not only on picking the right beans, but also additional factors involved in making great espresso. You can not read this book and not feel like you learned from a person with true knowledge on the topic.

Good overall perspective with a heavy emphasis on crema.A few details seemed off or downright incorrect (ex. Never heard of a cylindrical burr but I do know flat ones are common. Also the temperature settings for different roast levels are the exact opposite of other brew methods so this seems either incorrect or needs more explaination on why it's different from other brew methods)Claims of science arent always backed up but overall pretty good there. As an engineer I really appreciate the more technical explaination of what crema is and how it forms.Seems like a deeper dive on many details wouldnt be too much to ask as much of the information isnt far beyond whats readily available online for free. Mostly it was a little more science and actually a broader range of variation than is common.One thing that would make the book better is a deeper troubleshooting guide. Maybe consoder adding a few graphics as well for things like color to help the espresso novice.Overall a good summary though a bit short for what I paid.

Many years I ago I was a young busy mother, curious and interested in volunteering with those with chronic illnesses or approaching death. My dream was to volunteer at Bailey Boushay House in Seattle. (first hospice to welcome AIDS patients in the nation and now a hospice for AIDS and those with terminal illnesses) Many years later with kids grown and gone, I set out with a plan. That plan involved volunteering with Bailey Boushay House, returning to school in healthcare (Occupational Therapy) and enrolling in the End of Life Program at the Metta Institute (Frank Ostaseski, founder). I bought Franks' "Being a Compassionate Companion" CD as I embarked on my journey. Having listened to the CD, narrated by Frank and then attending the End of Life Practitioner Program, I can tell you, this book has so much "voice"! IT is like being in the same room having a conversation or lecture with this author. I think about what the movie "To Sir, with Love" taught us about life lessons that still resonate today, well THE FIVE INVITATIONS takes us on a journey where the "approach" to death is actually approachable and the birthing of new insight into the end of life is sorely needed in this world. I usually give away my books after reading them , not this one....it will be reread over and over. As I closed the last chapter, my eyes filled with tears......this book touched me in a deep and profound way......it leaves you "okay" with not having all the answers and a up close personal feel with a subject our culture avoids...

When I was 12, my mom died of cancer. It spread from her lungs to her brain, briefly going into remission to cruelly give us hope before slowly killing her. For years, I was mad at the world because of this and I turned that anger inward on myself. It was a poisonous way to live, mostly devoid of joy or love. No one could understand how I felt, I thought, so I wouldn't try to explain it to them. Over the last few years, I've learned how to stop poisoning myself. After finishing Frank's book last week, I have a whole new set of tools to use death to embrace life. I also have a new view: We all live and we all die, therefore we all have been touched by death in our own ways. If we haven't been touched yet, we will be. This, to me, means that love and compassion are the ways forward for humanity, even with our enemies or people we've fallen out with.Perhaps I sound like a flit yogi or Woodstock washout, but I'm OK with that if it means I don't have to be owned by pain and fear of death. I know that my mom is within me still in some way, even if just as a lovely memory. Perhaps you can catch of my same high and also gain some new tools for living more fully and with more love from Frank's book. It's very good - I found myself laughing, crying, and rapt by Frank's stories and knowledge at different points of the book. It's a very sweet, helpful, and compassionate book. Frank, who worked has at an end-of-life hospice in San Francisco for decades, has an intimate relationship with death. You'd think this would make him callous or cynical like my childhood self, but quite the opposite is true: he embraces death as reality and is therefore able to live more fully.You can embrace death for a more full life, too. Any of us who have had a relative die might remember their regrets or sorrows, the "I wish I could have.." or "I'm sad I won't be able to..." before death carries them away. We likely know what our own wishes and sorrows are; why wait until the end to address them? Why not learn from our loved ones?Frank's methods for using death to live a more full life are sound. "Don't wait" is his first invitation, and I'm sure we've all had opportunities and moments pass by while we said "Hm, maybe later." Well guess what? This happens with life, too. Don't wait. Frank's anecdotes - sometimes sweet, sometimes gut-wrenching - will help you see how his invitations have worked over the years. I was touched by the many people who died next to Frank, all who seemed to show an immense, seemingly improbable strength in the face of death. Frank's message: we can show this strength in life, too, but it may not necessarily be what we think of as "strength." Vulnerability can be strength, he writes. So can acceptance.Even if all you get from this book is the fact that death is part of life - one that shouldn't be treated as life's deranged cousin - then I think you'll have your money's worth. However, you'll get more than that.A very good book. Read, and then live. But be careful doing both at the same time- after all, we're trying to accept death here, not run toward it.

I was captivated by The Five Invitations, reading it cover-to-cover in a 24-hour period. As I got closer to the end, I found myself reading much slower because I just didn't want it to end. I was inspired by the stories of people both young and old at the end of their lives. The part that impressed me was that it was not just stories of inspiration on how I can embrace my days, but also I found wisdom as a new mom, and how to savor these moments with my little one more. There was a chapter about grief that hit me in a way that was very profound and moving, it opened up a place in my heart about a the loss of a dear friend many years ago, that just hadn't healed. Reading Frank's book gave me a new understanding on how to "be" with that loss and feel complete with it's incompleteness. Thank you for your beautiful book.
