Not much in there, and the author spends way too much time telling us the obvious. Like three pages to convince us that twice the RAM, an ethernet socket, and an extra USB socket is worth the extra ten bucks.By contrast, re using the Pi for remote control, he says only "Simply hookup with VNC ..," Huh? How? What is it? Control what?Lewis, John (2013-01-30). Raspberry Pi: User Guide (Quick and Easy Guides) (Kindle Location 505). Echo Bay Books. Kindle Edition.

This is a great book to help decide if you would like to purchase a pi or start to become an expert pi user and everything in between. Enjoy.

"The quick and easy guide to raspberry pi" is utterly useless. The book provides commonly known information and resources that can be found by typing "raspberry pi" in a search engine (quiet literally, take a look at the wiki page). Most pages throughout the book are half written, sometimes only containing a few lines of text. Other pages contain dyagrams outlining the perifrial schematics of the raspberry pi. The only positive atribute of this product is the price. I would not reorder the copy I have; though, I wouldn't through it away either.

I bought this along with a new Raspberry Pi. I purchased other books as well, all in kindle version. The information was correct, easy to locate and follow. However, it overlaps with other books and so in hind sight I might have passed and just purchased the User Guide.

This book is not for someone who are techy or at least have some ideas about bits and bytes. This is a book for people who are completely new to the board and feels hard to grasp smallest information of it. The information in the book is the normal information that is available anywhere on the web but it is accumulated in this book in a very nice way so that any laymen person can also understand it better. I would call it the Raspberry Pi: Kick Start User Guide.

This guide is novel in that it packs a lot of info into a very few pages. Easy to read and understand. Thanks to the author who makes it seem anyone can do this; even a novice like me and my grandson!

Good introduction, and handy Kindle format. This information is out on the web, but hereit is in a handy place. But the book and a pi.

This short book gives you a brief intro to the raspberry pi computer. When finish, you will have a basic understanding of the device.

I was very impressed by this coloring book. I have bought several and most of them just show boobs, this one shows penises and vaginas. There are orgies, lesbian, gay and heterosexuals having all types of sex.

Enclosed is a coloring book filled with real erotic and sexy drawing of the human body. A mixture of couples of both sexes. The only thing I didn't like was the huge drawings otherwise I found it to be really drawn out professionally. I haven't colored anything yet because I am still reading books on how to best color people. I don't want to down play the coloring in this books because it's really life-like in some if not most of the drawing. It will be a challenge to make it come to life.

Amazing detail! If you are looking for a graphic coloring book this is it!

Fun, dirty, and catering to ALL tastes. Given as a gift, my wife LOVES this.

Arrived quickly and is printed on good paper. Nice dark black lines and no fading. Good clear drawing.

Beautiful Pics, and great detail!!

Love this, great stress reliever.

This is an incredible book. The art is fantastic! I'm really happy with this purchase! You won't be disappointed!

When I Was Eight

From School Library Journal

K-Gr 4-This condensed, illustrated version of Fatty Legs (Annick, 2010) brings the power of literacy to even younger children. An eight-year-old Inuit child from Banks Island in far northern Canada desperately wanted to learn to read English like her older sister, but her father refused to let her attend the Indian Residential School. However, her persistent pleading wore away his resistance, and he consented. They made the five-day trek to the Catholic-run school where Olemaun was stripped of her Native identity-her hair, her clothes, even her name. She was allowed to keep only her beloved copy of Alice in Wonderland. Renamed Margaret, she clung to her desire to learn to read, enduring humiliation and harsh treatment from cruel nuns and unkind classmates. She instinctively knew that literacy was powerful, and she used it to give her courage and "to carry [her] far away from the laughter." In a showdown with a nun, Margaret defied the insensitive teacher, who in turn tried to humiliate Margaret by demanding that she read a difficult passage aloud in class. However, she read without hesitation and triumphed. "There was no stopping me" is an accurate description of what happens when someone-child or adult-learns to read. Sprinkled throughout are details of Inuit life. The beautiful, expressive watercolor illustrations depict Margaret's journey from her village to the misery of residential school to her success. This book is a small but powerful reminder of the freedom that literacy brings.-Lisa Crandall, formerly at the Capital Area District Library, Holt, MIα(c) Copyright 2013. Review

The words and the art in When I Was Eight convey a frightful but honest story about perseverance... Look for it. Order it. Share it. (Debbie Reese American Indians in Children's Literature 2013-02-21)A searing account of assimilation policies and a celebration of the human spirit In this picture-book memoir, an Inuit recollects how she begged her father to attend the church-run Indian residential school so she could fulfill her cherished dream to learn to read... What she discovers is the school is draconian... Olemaun describes how a nun cuts her braid, changes her name, and assigns an endless list of chores... Even as she labors, Olemaun finds strength in memories of her father's love and uses every opportunity to study the alphabet and sound out words. Effective shadow-ridden illustrations capture the pervasive atmosphere of abuse, but the final picture speaks volumes about Olemaun's determination and triumph: her face appears as large and shining as the sun emerging from darkness, because she has taught herself to read... A searing account of assimilation policies and a celebration of the human spirit. (Jeanne McDermott Booklist 2013-04-30)Olemaun is a great character and an excellent example for young readers to follow. (Shelbey Krahn Canadian Materials 2013-06-21)Pokiak-Fenton's true story of her experiences at residential school, was originally told in Fatty Legs (Annick, 2010), When I Was Eight is an even more powerful read due to its emphasis on concise, affective text coupled with Gabrielle Grimard's quietly unpretentious artwork. (Canlit for Little Canadians 2013-04-28)Powerful and disturbing... Readers will admire her for her incredible spirit and courage. (Exeter Times Advocate 2013-05-31)Utterly compelling. (Kirkus Reviews 2013-02-18)When I was Eight is a powerful story based on the true story of Margaret Pokiak-Fenton... It is a story of a young Inuit girl who goes to a residential school and suffers terrible abuse from the nuns at the school... Through all these trials, she perseveres in trying to learn to read. One day in class she is finally able to stand up to the teacher and show her own strength by reading aloud. It is a moment of victory! Although this story may be intended for younger students who are studying the Inuit, it could also be used in upper grades when discussing social justice issues. The story ties in with anti-bullying themes as well... Highly recommended. (Lori Austin Resource Links, Vol. 18, No. 5 2013-05-31)This condensed, illustrated version of Fatty Legs brings the power of literacy to even younger children... The beautiful, expressive watercolor illustrations depict Margaret's journey to the misery of residential school to her success. (Lisa Crandall School Library Journal 2013-05-01)This excellent picture book, written as a companion to the longer version of it called Fatty Legs, is a powerful way to introduce the residential school experience to younger readers. In When I Was Eight readers get to see what it was like for a young Inuit girl to leave her family for a residential school. There are some very negative experiences there for her, but it is also a time for her to discover her own strength and determination.I have been happy to see more and more children's literature and non-fiction about the residential school era in North America. This is a time in history that our country should know about and should remember. I think there has been healing in the sharing of these stories and the more people that hear them, the better off we all are. This also fills a gap that we have. I am looking forward to more picture book memoirs like this.

This is a great book.

love it

A moving story that is great to use as a read-aloud.

great picturesprobably wouldn't read it as a picture book to younger kids b/c it's a bit "scary" with the Raven (evil teacher)

When I Was Eight by Christy Jordan-Fenton and Margaret Pokiak-Fenton is an adaptation of Fatty Legs, in which Olemaun recollects her negative experiences in a church-run residential school. Because I have read both books, as I review When I Was Eight, I will also be comparing and contrasting the two versions.I'll start with what I liked about When I Was Eight. The well-crafted writing style stands out more in When I Was Eight. There are many active verbs, such as "shrugged" and "begged". In addition, there's a lot of figurative language, such as "the sun slept" and "slumbering ice". The strong word choices exist in Fatty Legs too, but they feel more prevalent and significant in a picture book. When I Was Eight would make for an excellent mentor text in elementary schools. When I Was Eight is also more focused than Fatty Legs. The latter is about Olemaun (Margaret's Inuit name) and her family, her friends, her desire to read, her conflicts with a mean nun and brother, and more. In contrast, When I Was Eight is solely about Oleman's determination to read enabling her to withstand all forms of abuse from a nameless nun. In fact, the story is so tightly told that it develops a fairy tale quality, where the young heroine must battle an evil grown-up. Because of its overt theme, teachers could use When I Was Eight to help reluctant readers see how the power of books can change them.Next, I'll turn to what I didn't like about When I Was Eight. Due to the brevity of text required of a picture book, some important details were left out. For example, When I Was Eight tells readers that Olemaun enters the laundry room, stands beside a huge vat, and then "gets an idea" about how to get rid of the red stockings. In contrast, Fatty Legs tells readers tells how a tear vanishing into bubbling water gives her that idea.In my review of Fatty Legs, I highlighted its realistic characters because sometimes books that depict atrocities resort to portraying all of the "enemy" as evil but Fatty Legs avoided that trap. Well.... as I review When I Was Eight has eliminated the friend who provided support to Olemaun, and the kind nun, and really anyone who seemed nice. Instead Olemaun is on her own in her determination to read. Some critics have lamented the absence of a historical note in as I review When I Was Eight . I have mixed feelings about this. On one hand, in Fatty Legs I greatly appreciated the scrapbook and other supplementary material that provided context for the story. I ended up wanting to read more Inuit stories. On the other hand, the historical notes meant while reading Fatty Legs I remained keenly aware that I was learning about a real time and a real place. Whereas, as I noted above, When I Was Eight was more like a fairy tale. Both approaches serve a purpose, as does having two versions that are intended for different readers. Each book provides a glimpse into the way of life of the Inuit, while also containing an inspiring universal message. There are two more books in the set, another chapter and picture book combo. It'll be interesting to see what Christy Jordan-Fenton writes next about her mother-in-law's experiences of growing up Inuit.

"When I Was Eight" is a poignant tale of an eight-year-old Inuit girl named Olemaun whose one desire above all else is to read. She wishes to go to the outsider's school (Reservation school) but her father doesn't want to send her for reasons Olemaun comes to understand much later. When she does attend the school, Olemaun finds herself and the other Inuit students being put to work, doing menial chores, and sadly, Olemaun becomes the target of a cruel nun who taunts and humiliates the young girl. The story is depressing but as my eight-year-old read this to me during our nightly bedtime reading, we both rejoiced in Olemaun's tenacity and fierce determination to not only rise above her oppression but to also realize her dream of learning to read. Yes, the story is incredibly sad, especially when one considers the abominable treatment these young children had to endure in a place that was meant to shelter, care for, and educate them. I spent some time discussing the themes in the book with my young daughter and she expressed happiness and relief that Olemaun was able to learn to read, despite all that she had endured. After reading "When I Was Eight", I discovered that the author had also written Fatty Legs: A True Story, which is a chapter book on a similar theme geared towards readers ages 9 and up. My daughter has expressed interest in reading the book, and I for one intend to read Broken Circle: The Dark Legacy of Indian Residential Schools.

We read "When I Was Eight" for our homeschool history study. We also read "Not My Girl". I recommend reading both books together for a more complete picture of Olemaun's experiences. Both books were beautifully written and illustrated, and made even more special because they are true. Written from the perspective of an eight year old child, "When I Was Eight" was very accessible for my second grader, and she really connected to Olemaun, and the story of being bullied by an adult (a mean nun) and having to be resourceful and tenacious in order to survive and thrive in an alien and hostile environment (the school). Written from the perspective of a ten year old in "Not My Girl", Olemaun has feelings of not fitting in when she returned to her family, but there is so much love and patience from her parents that she finally feels at home again. We loved both of these books so much we are planning to also read the longer books as well ("Fatty Legs" and "A Stranger at Home").Thank you to the authors and illustrator for such a valuable document written for children. This review was written by alias "Jumping Fish", age seven:" I read the book "When I Was Eight". The little girl in the story has to go to a "Indian" school. Her name is Olemaun. The nun at the school is not nice. It is good, good, good !!! Olemaun is strong and nice. She understood that nun was trying to get a reaction and she ignored her."

About the Author

Jolene Brackey began her career as an interior designer after graduating from Iowa State University. But she soon realized that she derived great joy from helping people improve the interiors of their lives, rather than their homes. When she left her interior design job, the first job available was in an Alzheimer' special care unit as an activity director. She didn't know what Alzheimer's was but she knew she liked older people. Before long, she realized that God had given her a gift. She found ways to create positive outcomes and moments of joy for the individuals with the disease, their loved ones, and professional caregivers. Eager to share her practical solutions and insights, Jolene began speaking at educational seminars. Her message of hope, encouragement-along with generous helpings of humor-was warmly embraced by family members and professional caregivers alike. So, she established a business, Enhanced Moments, to help guide people through the Alzheimer's journey. Jolene and her husband, Troy, live in Polson, Montana with their children Sidney, Taylor, and Keegan.

If you want to need to deal with a person who has dementia or alzheimer's, this is the most inspiring, uplifting book you can read on this subject. I have tried to read several, but they were too depressing. This book gives the reader a lot of ideas and specific instances of how to deflect worry and confusion. I have given this book to my family members and friends. I never dreamed I'd read a book about alzheimer's and be inspired! My favorite story was of the mother who wanted nothing more than to go to the beach and stick her feet in the sand one last time. The family took her on a major trip to the beach. On the way home, she said "all I want to do is stick my toes in the sand one more time." Instead of the family going nuts and saying WE WERE JUST THERE! They quietly said, 'we'll be there in about an hour'. In an hour, she had forgotten completely what she had wanted. Of course this only works if they don't remember! I can't say enough good things about this book. It will truly save your sanity!

One of the better author and books on the subject of any dementia or similar, such as Alzheimers! An absolute must read for not only professional care givers, but any and all caregivers, family members, friends, etc. If you want to understand how to react and give positive moments of joy, this is it!! This book will inform you how to react, talk and have peace in what you do with this issue. Have met this author and attended conferences where she has spoken! You cannot go wrong with this edition or any addition she puts out as time goes by for this subject covered!! Cannot recommend a more resourceful book, it is one of the best type books of any book on this subject by Jolene Brackey I've read! As an R.N. I feel most adament about this, with this particular book, absolutely!!!!

This has to be the best book ever on Alzheimer's. As hopeless as this disease makes us feel, it truly presents uplifting, compassionate methods on how to help the Alzheimer's victims and help caregivers find and create "moments of joy". The author encourages caregivers to think outside the box when needed and the rewards are priceless! (ordered on Kindle)There is a 5th edition of this book that I recently purchased as well, it has even more information and ideas (Creating Moments of Joy Along the Alzheimer's Journey). This one I bought in paperback as my working copy - I will take notes on what I discover about my loved one and, as this wonderful book suggests, pass on the information to others who love and care for her.

So many books about dementia focus on the clinical aspects of dementia or the challenges in being a caregiver. This one is refreshingly different because the emphasis is on giving your loved one the best day they can have today. The person many not remember for long what you did that made them happy, but the endorphins of that happiness will stay in their system for awhile and help them to feel good. At the same time, it explains in a very compassionate way, how the person with dementia experiences the world around them. It has helped me to show my mother better ways of taking care of Dad and understanding his actions. It has also helped me to find ways to give my Dad a few hours of fun at the same time that I brighten Mom's day. What I learned from this book proved invaluable, too, when it came time to find the right care facility for Dad to live.

Enjoyed this so much, I bought a copy for a sibling. Was great for understanding what our mother was dealing with (she was in her 80's when I bough this), and to see things through her eyes. Great ideas on how to not only communicate but to make visits enjoyable. Also brings a little peace about the disease. It is a horrible disease, but it makes you understand what the person is going through and how to handle it better, as many times you feel lost yourself, or at a loss, or hopeless in knowing what to do or how to handle a situation, and it helps to make your relationship with the person the most and best it can be during this very difficult time. A great read for sure!!!

This is the best possible book for grabbing little pieces of encouragement when working with or loving a person with Alzheimer's. It is written by a director of a memory care center with so much love and compassion. Jolene Brackey is helpful beyond measure for those of us struggling to manage on a day-to-day basis. And that's what she does. She allows us to find little ways to bring joy and often, redirection to calmness, so badly needed by loved ones. I am a psychiatric nurse, an education director for a large hospital, and a daughter of an Alzheimer's sufferer who no longer remembers me. I have bought five of these books for my family. It is easy to pick up at any point in the book and find a helpful tip. My family is so distraught, that I highlighted their copies with the relevant information and gave them back. Thank you, Jolene Brackey, for caring.

This book was an excellent resource to me when my mother began her experience with several communication and cognitive challenges... expressive aphasia where her words wouldn't come from her mouth and a level of dementia. This book not only helps family and friends who are supporting people with cognitive issues but for me, it was a way to relate better with the elderly despite their conditions. The book helped me be more patient (instead of trying to finish sentences or relate that "I've heard that story before") and to reach my loved one where she was at the time- moving in to her world. The book is a great resource into how our responses are received by the loved one and how instead we can Create Moments of Joy for where they are at. After moving my mom from one facility to another, a caregiver said how they had observed how patient and loving I was with my mom...I attribute it all to this book. You won't be disappointed- it explains the why, is funny and makes a heck of a lot of sense. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this book and have given it as gifts a couple times already.

Accidentally I received two of the same book.I gave it to my friend.I like the conditions of the bosok. Thank you.

Back to school. Cross-Cultural Psychology: Research and Applications is a new edition of a now classical textbook and reference manual aimed at senior level and graduate students in the field. As one trained in psychology at a point in time when culture was first making dent in the instructional preparation therapists, this encyclopedic tome is both a revelation and a frustration to this reviewer.First, the revelation. This book is testimony to how much work has been done in the field over the past forty years, both from the perspective of theory and research as well as that of practical application in and beyond the realms of therapy and education. When I was doing my doctoral studies, focused on educational psychology in the context of the Human Potential Movement, it was common for psychotherapists to regularly diagnose and treat Latino mothers as co-dependant. It is therefore gratifying to arrive at a time when we are seriously engaged in looking at "Culturally Informed and appropriate psychology," this being a chapter title, in effect "decolonizing" Western dominance of the field and interpretations of psychological realities and admitting indigeneous perspectives.Being grandfathered into intercultural work at a time when this discipline was at best starting to be created, it is gratifying for me to see how both validation and questioning from surrounding and complementary fields of study can help us get a larger and more well thought out picture of what we do. This reviewer makes no pretentions to an ability to pass judgement on the many theoretical propositions about human psychological and psychosomatic functioning, which is in fact the work that the multiple authors of this volume are engaged to do for us. The key to their evaluation and positioning of the many theories and studies in the field, however, can be found in the authors' deliberate choice of moderate universalism as their overall operational standpoint. We live in a world where nature and nurture are always simultaneously in play if in fact they can be distinguished from each other. We inevitably vacillate between identifiable functions of culture that display some firmness and stability though hardly absolutes, and, at the same time, see endless variations at play, ever more so as globalization brings us face to face with ourselves in each other. This review will be largely from my perspective as a member of the practicing interculturalist community, searching for and underlining what seems enlightening and useful for our profession and, I suspect that moderate universalism is in fact also the operational code for most though not all of us.Cross-Cultural Psychology, both the book and the field are essentially interdisciplinary. Reading these pages we empathize with the senior student whose intercultural interests lead to wondering, "Whither shall I go?" Psychology, anthropology, sociology, political science, biology, healthcare, business, pedagogy, etc., all beckon and inevitably have fingers in the pie in whatever field of intercultural study one embarks upon--none stands alone. The definition of cross-cultural psychology found in the introduction recognizes this interdependence:"Cross-Cultural Psychology is the study: of similarities and differences in individual psychological functioning in various cultural and ethnocultural groups; of ongoing changes in variables reflecting such functioning; and of the relationships of psychological variables with sociocultural, ecological, and biological variables."All the more important, then, that we understand the structure of the field(s) of study involved and their interplay, as well as how they are organized, in this volume if we are to find our bearings on what we want to explore and learn. The introduction goes on to define and position the field of cross-cultural psychology and provides guidelines for research and interpretation. We then move on to Part I, which examines Similarities and differences in behavior across cultures. This brings together theories, research and interpretation, individual development at various stages of the life cycle, as well as social behavior where culture is defined as a social psychological construct. Five areas of human functioning are examined in detail, a chapter each for personality cognition, emotion, language and perception. The question to be answered is: How and, if so, to what degree does cultural difference affect the development and behavior of human beings in each of these capacities? Copious research is reviewed often with helpful notice of its historical development. Here is where perhaps the readers' frustration, mentioned above begins to appear. Especially if one is addicted to certainties, history shows that extrapolating our "scientific" conclusions about other peoples often morphs into erroneous if not prejudicial beliefs. It is the journey of research that enlightens and educates rather than the destination. While there may be hostels of tentative conclusion along the way, the pilgrimage of inquiry is an ongoing one and the landscape endlessly changes. Thus the authors kindly guide us, concluding each chapter with a look at the map, tracing the terrain we have covered, and offering us bearings on where we are most likely positioned in the inquiry to go next--a practical expression of the moderate universalism they have espoused.Part 2, looks at Relationships between behavior, culture and biology, examining the contributions of the disciplines of cultural anthropology and evolutionary biology to our understanding of culture and hence of how cross-cultural psychology is conducted. If, as practicing interculturalists, we sloughed off Part 1, and found our interest piqued somewhat by Part 2, it is likely to peak in Part 3 which looks to Applying research findings across cultures--it is after all about our real world. The chapters on Acculturation and Intercultural relations found here also shine, no doubt due to the active engagement of the majority of the book's authors with issues such as immigration, acculturation and intercultural relations. One finds considerably more clarity here about the nature and kinds of migration, as well as psychological and social acceptance processes both in the individual and social contexts from which migrants come and into which they move. As an aside, most of the literature I have seen on so called "blended culture" and "third culture kids" could benefit from this overview as well as from more intense study of these dynamics as found in other studies made by several of the authors.Given this, the following chapter on Intercultural education and training is largely about dealing with "sojourners," people temporarily in or in contact with other cultures, expatriates, students and the like. We intercultural practitioners are confronted with the issue that "empirical tests of the effectiveness of training have tended to trail behind the development of new training." What exists frequently indicates very little empirical evidence of results, despite the "branding" of cultural competence tools. While the use of broad cultural dimensions seems to be the most widespread element of training interventions, it is problematic that "most differences that are found tend to be very situation specific or domain specific." This seems to give greater credibility to processes where "assimilator" types of tools and critical incidents are employed. Certainly those of us who design interventions could benefit by the small extra effort involved in encouraging researchers to explore what works, why it works, and under what conditions.Equally challenging and fascinating for the practicing interculturalist is the chapter on Work and organizations. The authors have narrowed down the vast literature now available in this area to focus on how ambient culture affects the structure and particular culture of organizations and how these spell themselves out in the values, behavior and dispositions toward work in both management and employees. An organization's culture is developed not just from what it makes or the kind of service it provides, but by the legal and socio-political philosophy of where they are formed and where they operate. Ecology, size and economy may be factors. Organizational shape may be in conflict with function and individual motivation and collaborative behaviors may be key to understanding what is going on in the enterprise.Neither the classical studies of Hofstede nor the more recent GLOBE research program provide a satisfying analysis of how values operate in the context of organizational behavior. If we are to develop clearer understandings of how values may either drive or be driven by organizational contexts, there will need to be much more research that isolates culture specific value sets that currently are all too easily lumped into the generic values terminology that we see in the dimensional literature. In short we must get to the stories that express and drive values locally, rather than rely on what seems to be our addiction in the social sciences to statistically driven survey results and their interpretation. The penultimate chapter addresses Health: mental health, pathologies and therapeutic interventions across cultures, as well as the cultural context and ecology of bodily health around the world. Of course psychology and corporality are inseparable. Health is handily defined as the WHO does it, "a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being, and not just the absence of disease or infirmity." Psychology has a task here, both in helping us define the cultural factors conducive to healthy living as well as addressing the creation of attitudes and the mentality of policies that seek to improve healthy living. While Western taxonomies of disease and prescribed means of diagnosis and care are widespread, they are interpreted by culturally diverse recipient mentalities and culturally diverse conceptions of pathology and cure. This leaves the area of psychopathology and its role in overall sickness and health difficult to define. While mental disorders have been repeatedly classified, whether they turn out to be biased or not toward a specific culture or seen and evaluated differently across cultures remains an open question, begging considerably more study. The authors highlight this challenge and attempt to briefly explore it by looking at three psychopathological conditions with worldwide prevalence, namely: organic disorders, schizophrenia and depression, while admitting that a universal set of psychopathologies is likely not identifiable. Even in the three categories cited, the role of culture is extremely difficult to pinpoint in the origin, expression and cure of the condition. That culture plays a role is evident in the social expression of sickness, for example, where a person in one culture will complain of feeling sad where elsewhere a somatic symptom emerges, such as a headache or other localized pain.Psychotherapy can be described as indigenous, if client, therapist and society share the same culture, or as Multicultural, where the intervention takes place without the concurrence of these variables, and must therefore be exercised with cultural savvy and sensitivity. While we can consider Western psychotherapy as indigenous, Morita and Naikan in Japan as well as Caribbean Voodoo are cited as other indigenous examples. Frankly speaking as a counselor for many years, the reviewer is of the opinion that virtually all systems are multicultural because clients will share in many cultural identities even within their native society. Not only must the caregiver be sensitive to these, but also be aware, as the authors suggest, that the trust, belief and acceptance of the client are critical elements in the success or failure of the intervention and that cultural adaptation is very much implicated in creating these attitudes. The chapter ends with some psychological observations about improving quality of life in a world of economic disorder and poverty, infant mortality and transmissible disease.Culturally Informed and appropriate psychology, mentioned earlier, is the final chapter topic. Here both the diffusion and dominance of Western psychology are examined along with expositions of several indigenous psychologies in the light of seeking what is needed to create a global praxis. This clearly requires mutual respect, openness to the beliefs of others, as well as discovery of pertinent knowledge and collaboration. It is tied to ethical concerns, not only rising from the practice of of the psychological professions, but also from the political and economic factors that de facto create conditions for illness to flourish. The search is for what can be universal in a discipline that is culturally diverse. The text concludes with an Epilogue. The authors ask themselves as well as their readers if their work has met expectations, and what might be needed next. Here the frustration surfaces again, simply because there is so much important work to do. Their hope is that this textbook will stimulate not just interdisciplinary but also intercultural collaboration on critical topics, that it would engaging psychologists from all societies, in a context that says culture matters. We must congratulate the editors on making this massive book readable in terms of layout, typesetting, color and illustrations, though it exceeds my kitchen scale's kilogram assessment. Eleven pages of Key Terms are defined and explained to assist the user to refresh and focus perspective amidst the plethora of terminology used in the chapters. 124 pages of Bibliography plus Author and Subject indices make the volume appear more daunting than it is. In addition, the authors do not hesitate, where useful to provide linkage to more extensive resources accessible by Internet, often signaled in the margin of the page.

I read a long about various fields of science and academia, but it's a long time I hadn't read a book so poorly written. It is unnecessarily abstract and lacks examples. The whole book reads like a long bibliography, in which the authors essentially mention papers by other psychologists, but without explaining or summarising their findings. It takes energy to decipher their dense prose, and when I look back on the chapter I have read and look at my notes to see what I have learned,it turns out thee was very little content of interest. The book doesn't provide any statistical data, graphs or tangible comparisons about world cultures. They mention studies and books that do, but it would have been much more useful and enjoyable if they had tried to explain and summarize those other studies. It is supposed to be an educational book, but it feels like a book written solely to display the authors' knowledge of other people's work, without making any attempt to make the reader want to check those studies. Very disappointing

This book was frustratingly boring and wordy. I expected this book to be thought provoking but some of the examples were simply dull and unimaginative. But my main problem with this text is the authors over engineered the sentences. They seemed to take the view: "Why use 10 words when 30 will do?".

This book was a great book to have for class. The details are well explained.

Review

“Hugo's genius was for the creation of simple and recognizable myth. The huge success of Les Misérables as a didactic work on behalf of the poor and oppressed is due to his poetic and myth-enlarged view of human nature.”—V. S. Pritchett

About the Author

Victor Hugo (1802–1885) was the son of a high-ranking officer in Napoleon Bonaparte’s Grand Army. A man of literature and politics, he participated in vast changes as France careened back and forth between empire and more democratic forms of government. As a young man in Paris, he became well-known and sometimes notorious for his poetry, fiction, and plays. In 1845, the year that he began writing his masterwork, Les Misérables, the king made him a peer of France, with a seat in the upper legislative body. There he advocated universal free education, general suffrage, and the abolition of capital punishment. When an uprising in 1848 ushered in a republic, he stopped writing Les Misérables and concentrated on politics. But in 1851, when the president proclaimed himself emperor, Hugo’s opposition forced him into a long exile on the British Channel Islands. There, in 1860, he resumed work on Les Misérables, finishing it the next year. With the downfall of the emperor in 1870, Hugo returned to France, where he received a hero’s welcome as a champion of democracy. At his death in 1885, two million people lined the streets of Paris as his coffin was borne to the Pantheon. There he was laid to rest with every honor the French nation could bestow.

I advise those perusing these reviews to take with a measure of salt the dogmatic pronunciations on the quality of Rose's translation. Provenance is important, and one should always "consider the source." (Yes, even with me.)A number of interviews with Rose are available online, in which she discusses her work, and her work on this novel. The novel has a lengthy and detailed Translator's Preface, in which she discusses the novel, the translation process, and her approach to it. You also can find online some independent articles about this translation. The great translator of Spanish language literature, Edith Grossman, said:"I can't say what makes a book translatable, but I do think that all texts can be translated. The question of whether or not a work is "translatable" stems from a mistaken and widely held notion that a translation is really a one-for-one set of equivalences with the original--a straightforward lexical problem--when in fact it is a rewriting of the first text. Some, of course, are immensely difficult (they're usually just as difficult in the original) and challenge the translator's sensitivity to nuance, levels of meaning, and artistic impact in both languages. I see my work as translating meaning, not words."Rose has spoken similarly about her work."I think the essential difference is that...and I'm not saying that translators always have to do this, there are reasons for departing a little bit further from a writer's text where it just won't work in English. I found on the contrary what really worked better in English was to follow Hugo much more closely than anyone else seems to have done. So I've actually followed his syntax as closely as possible, I've followed the rhythm of his sentences and I've actually broken it up the way he has and stuck more closely to what he says." -- Julie Rose, interview, 2009She's translated more than thirty French works into English -- plays, poetry, novels, genre fiction. She worked on Les Miserables for three years. She has been awarded three international prizes for her translations. I'm willing to take the leap of faith -- she is "fluent in French." I recommend others accept the facts in plain sight, and do likewise.I stopped reading works in translation in the early 1980s, and didn't start up again until around 2005. The reason I stopped was that I concluded that I could not hear the author's voice in the translated work. The reason I started again was that Rose, Grossman, and some others showed that they understood this challenge, accepted it, and that it is possible to capture the author's voice in a translation, by actually listening to the author's intent.According to one account, the Rose translation is almost 100,000 words longer than the 1976 Denny "translation" -- that's how much material he excised from the novel to "improve it." Denny, in fact, is on record as saying that Victor Hugo was a terrible writer, and needed some "tidying up." If you're just looking to pad your reading CV with another of the "great books," then it doesn't matter which one you read. Might as well go with a shorter one. If you're looking to read the translation of Les Mis, that will make you feel like you are reading the original, hearing Victor Hugo's voice, then pick up Rose's translation.

Thank God I got the Kindle version for my Kindle Keyboard 3G. I read through 12% of the book before wondering 'how long will it take me to finish!!?". So I measured my reading speed pages-per-minute and estimated the total reading time for the entire book to be 64 hours. Seriously. So I took a different approach: I would read for an hour or two, then when fatigue started setting in, I pressed the "shift-sym" keyboard shortcut to activate text-to-speech, and just sat back or laid in bed while the kindle AI voice read it to me. This book famously takes place in France, and a lot of the names of people / places / streets are in French, so it's nice having the AI effortlessly pronounce them. My favorite was hearing it pronounce "Champs-Élysées" over and over again. It was pleasant, almost hypnotizing. Text-to-Speech allowed me to focus on the incredible story and not hassle through the pronunciations. Victor Hugo goes off on many tangents, such as 30+ page histories of the battle of waterloo, and the construction of the sewer system in Paris. It's quite fascinating and adds much to the story. There are many nuanced scenes that I continually go back to in my head, like the back passages behind the court room for transporting lawyers, and the one for transporting the criminals. And the ideas of whether a person can ever redeem themselves in society, contrasted with the situation that society is often times a poor judge of how to redeem oneself, and whether they should be deserving of redemption. It is an honest critique of criminal justice that is probably as relevant today as it was then.My understanding is that this "penguin classics" version has a better translation than the "free" version going around on the internet. It you're going to devote ~64 hours to an experience of life and death in old France, best put in a few bucks to get the best translation possible. For today's generation, the length of the story can be a bit jarring and leaves you wondering "will this story ever end?" I say this book is not at all to be treated as a story. It's not a television show. It's not a movie. It's not a musical. Les Miserables is an EXPERIENCE. So get the good version on Kindle, and have the AI voice continue the reading when fatigue starts to set in.

I am by no means a scholar . I cannot compare translations as this is the first book by Victor Hugo that I've read. After seeing the musical I decided to read the book. I'm glad that I did it in this order. Having seen the musical I did not get lost in the book's twists and turns and I had patience when the story went off into different avenues. Likewise I could selectively read the sections on history. I have always been moved by the story's theme of morality based on law versus morality rooted in love. This book is unquestionably worth reading!! The development of the characters and their struggles are so rich that I found myself crying during parts of the book. While the musical is a moving and touching story , it is nothing compared to the book itself. The best compliment I can give to a book is that touched my life and that its main characters shall live on within my heart. My life is richer for having read this book. The many sections that I have highlighted I shall revisit over and over for years to come.
