2019 is shaping up to an amazing year of reading. This book keeps the momentum rolling as I devoured this book in about a week and then had to go back and read again to explore more deeply my highlights and scribbles in the margin.I really enjoyed the 25 words and has motivated me to think about my own words. What words with my youth teams pick? I found so many of the ideas concepts that can be applied as a teacher, youth coach, and parent. There are many universal truths contained in these pages that work no matter who you are. Additionally, I loved the basketball stories as I love reading about the drive of players like KG.I will be gifting this book to others, but for now it will be required reading for my own children so they can apply the principles to their own lives.

Kevin offers outstanding guidance in a precise, crisp prose. It's an enjoyable and easy read and you can dive in anywhere.I just ordered copies for several coaching friends. While he comes at his essential words from a sports point of view, the words are just as powerful from a career and life perspective. Any one, of any age, would greatly benefit from Kevin's elegant writing.

Enjoyable read and a quick at that. Eastman is someone I follow on Twitter and book matched what I would anticipate.

It was ok, got through it, wasn’t incredible wasn’t terrible. I’m not a basketball coach but love basketball, i think it’s best for them. Nothing earth-shattering. A lot of simple concepts.

As many reviewers said, it's NOT a tutorial in any way shape or form. It seemed like a bunch of "interviews" with various lettering artists, with questions like "favorite letter" and "favorite writing implement". Each artist does provide an alphabet, but there are few instructions.

This is a FABULOUS book. I have created several different art projects with it, including the letter art one (photo attached). As I was completing a large R, a neighbor child was playing in our house. She gasped and said, "That's beautiful!" Imagine her surprise a few days later when I made one for her...

I wish I could find a book that actually gave instruction and guidance on HOW to actually form and shape letters. This book has some amount of eye candy - but no real instruction.

This book has several samples of lettering by different artists. They even give you a step-by-step guide to try your hand at some of them. However I found the techniques not that "beginner" friendly. Step one sketch out your intended silhouette and lettering. (If I knew how to sketch out the lettering, I would not need a book on lettering.) Step three add soft shading using a paper stump. (paper stump?) Step five practice lettering on a piece of rough rag marker paper with a dip pen and black waterproof ink. (not really staples in my kid's craft kit). The book has beautiful samples by fantastic artists, no doubt. I was just hoping for something a little more simple to get my "not-a-natural-artist" tween a step further in her desire to make word art.

More of a cutesy lettering book than a real lettering guide. There are, all in all, maybe 5 useful pages for professional letterers.

I purchased this book as well as creative lettering for kids for my 10 year old daughter for Christmas. She absolutely loves both books. I would say that these books are more intended for inspiration and to give you ideas that you can run with more than a “how to” book. Which I actually prefer, and I’m so excited to get creating with my daughter. I adore Jenny Doh and I can’t wait for the companion book to come out.

I like the 2nd book better than this one. I had very high expectations for this book but when I bought the 2nd book, I was more impressed on the other one. I think the reason is because the examples in the 2nd book was more interesting to me.

This book is terrible. Is marketed as techniques for lettering, but gives no actual instruction on lettering, just how to copy others' art projects. Major disappointment.

It has given me information I wish I'd received "in the box" when I got my Explore Air. The author has taken pictures of her own Explore Air to visually show the material to which she is referring. She talks about older versions of the Cricut geneology, she describes the machine, she includes pictures from the Design Center to help with "getting started", she talks about necessary/helpful tools and supplies.I am very pleased with the book. Thank you, Amelia!

Although I previously owned the Cricut Personal (which I gave to a friend), I found it was too much work for things I wanted to create. I purchased the Cricuit Air 2 today and have create 5 projects my first day thanks to this book. This book is very informative, easy to read and gives step by step instructions and very good resources. I recommend this book to anyone who is new to the Cricut cutters or doesn’t feel comfortable using it. I definitely recommend it

I just love this book. Easy to understand and written in a language any one can understand. Lots of pictures and she has the same machine as I do so I can look from the picture to my machine. No reason to have any questions when you get done with this.

I am a new Cricut user, and I find that there is not much written material on the how-tos of the machine and system. The unit doesn't come with a manual, and that's unfortunate. There is a LOT to know about using the machine and how to design and create projects. I found this booklet (it's not large, thus, I am calling it a booklet) useful, but too pricey for what it gives. One complaint I have is the visuals she provides to "help" y ou understand the process. They are small screen shots that are either too small, too faint, or both. In either case, you can't READ them to help your understanding of what she is trying to tell you. I'd've given it 2-1/2 stars, 'cause I really don't see it as a strong 3-star.

I was very disappointed in the book. The instructions were not clear and the examples were poor print quality and were difficult to read. A waste of money.

I read this book when it was first published and fell under its bizarre influence. Did Aickman create a new genre with this collection? It might parallel magic realism, but it is distinct from it. Perhaps it is related to "The Metamorphosis," but no. Again, it has a flavor of its own.Aickman has this knack of making his reader feel uncomfortable in the most delicious way. He knows just what image to pop into your head. Not violent images. Not horrific images in the Lovecraftian vein. Images that disturb nevertheless. His stories wriggle back into your head over and over again. There's something going on in these tales, unspoken, potent and beyond understanding.

Since the Robert Aickman books are short-story collections, no single answer (to the above survey questions) is applicable to all stories. But in general, the excellence in writing completely supersedes any need for graphic violence or explicit sex to engage the reader. Certainly, these events are implied, from time to time. But the reader isn't told what's happening; the reader is lured into the depth of events by nibbling about all the edges, with such ravenous attention to each bite, that he finds he has completed the meal a heady morsel at a time, and is never full, but left always salivating for the next course.

As a lover of ghost stories, I took a chance on this book, in spite of certain suspicions, doubts, and misgivings. SUCKER!!! I don't know whether it was Aickman, or his publisher, who concocted the con-job of affixing catchy titles to his collections of drivel, and marketing them as some-kind-of-ghost-stories, but I have to admit that I fell for it. These stories are not even remotely scary, and they have absolutely nothing to do with ghosts. They also have no character development, plot, purpose, or rationale. They merely end (which is the best part) without reaching any conclusion. The only 'disturbing' or 'haunting' thought they leave me with is being annoyed with myself for wasting my time and money on them.The stories are worth only one star out of five, but I'm feeling merciful, so will give the book overall a two-star rating, only because Aickman CAN, when he wants to, string words together like a master craftsman. But a story teller, he is not.

Loved Aickman’s writing style. Not graphic splattergore horror, instead he is a slow burn story teller, dread constantly growing, restrained old school British, letting these “weird stories” play out in unexpected (and sometimes inconclusive) ways. An excellent introduction to Aickman, and I’ll read more of his books.

An odd writing style, almost mirroring Edwardian / Victorian horror. Occasionally Aickman does not clarify his ending or climax but you still come away with a spooked out feeling. A fun read for sure.

The thinnest of Faber's three recent collections of marvelous short stories by the undeservedly neglected horror writer Robert Aickman, COLD HAND IN MINE also shows his most obvious debts to Isak Dinesen, as another reviewer writes below. Dinesen's stories, at their best, very often refuse simple explanation exactly like Aickman's, and he seems to acknowledge his debt to her by means of the vaguely aristocratic characters and the Continental settings of two of the finest stories in this collection, "Niemandwasser" and "Pages from a Young Girl's Diary." Although this collection also has "The Swords," Aickman's allegory for the terrors of sexual coming-of-age, and "The Hospice," his nightmarish tale of being unable to get home (which might involve a hellish imagination of the state of being dead), it's not the place to begin with Aickman, and I would best recommend it for completists who have enjoyed his other two collection from Faber, THE WINE-DARK SEA and THE UNSETTLED DUST.

I doubt it is possible to characterize this, or any of Aiken's other books, except as " Strange Stories",But that is to damn them with faint praise. They are above all other things literate-- so, unlessYou are 1) over the age of 45 and 2) exceptionally well educated, you shouldn't even be permittedTo read them. She offers a nuanced exploration of the other factors that contributed to her disorder, such as finicky childhood eating habits, negative and positive comments about her body, and unwanted sexual advances from a predatory self-professed healer. Straightforward text and vivid imagery combine for a powerful, achingly honest memoir. Spare artwork devoid of color other than beige, gray, or sepia backgrounds reflects Green's despair. Controlled linework gives way to arresting, chaotic imagery. A cloud of scribbled black lines, symbolizing Green's ever-present stream of self-criticism, threatens to engulf her. At times her nude body floats through space, whittled down or engorged, or is depicted with the skin flayed, revealing her organs. Green realistically portrays her transformation over time from a rigidly controlled adolescent stymied by fear of failure to a young woman willing to take risks. Lighter Than My Shadow is Katie Green’s story of her life with anorexia. As a kid, she had the typical struggles with her family over finishing dinner and changing tastes. She was an artist from a young age, spending time alone in her imagination. Sometimes the things she found scared her, and she sought order and rules and rituals as a way to control her world.Her happy childhood was disrupted by oncoming puberty. Her best friend was growing up faster than Katie was, which drove them apart. Then there were bullying boys at school, where Katie’s achievement singled her out for more negative attention. Even her friends were catty to her about her lack of interest in the opposite sex. It all added up to a recipe for seeking ever more control over the one thing in her life she can control absolutely: what she eats. At first, her discipline, giving up junk food to start, made her feel healthy, but it soon came to consume her.Lighter Than My Shadow has a very different look from most graphic novels, as you can see at the book’s website. Her figures are simple, dot-eyed stand-ins that resemble toys, but they have an impressive sense of motion and emotion. The poses are realistic and well-observed.Most of the book is printed on grey or sepia paper, giving the whole thing a gloomy overtone that suits the material and focuses attention on the central figures. There are no gutters, and the borders between panels resemble torn paper edges. The despair that overtakes Green is shown as a black scribble, a simple but potent device that can be used as an overhanging cloud or a looming threat. Later on, she draws herself with a yawning open mouth in her midsection, the perfect image for how thinking about food and eating begins to define her.Green’s portrayal of her life is very approachable, which makes her gradual slide into disorder all the more understandable. Her depiction of her mental state, of how all this made sense to her and even how some attempts at recovery were just more ways of trying to be good, is incredibly truthful. The straightforward art makes this readable by even those not used to comics. I hope this book reaches outside the usual graphic novel readers, because its message of Katie’s journey could help a lot of girls and women realize they’re not alone in their concerns and mental struggles. This is a big book at around 500 pages, but it reads super quickly and is super engaging. It battles some really rough subject material (including, of course, anorexia, but also bingeing and rape). The subject matter is presented somewhat bluntly; the comic does not shy away from drawing uncomfortable illustrations, but by doing that, it feels very honest and real.

Katie Green's courage to talk about her life and what happened to her should be congratulated for sharing this very personal topic . Beautifully illustrated, this book deals with the harsh realities of eating disorders and sexual abuse. It is so important to bring these taboo subjects out into the light, and I appreciate the authors openness about her experience. I read through the book first and then my 14 year old daughter wanted to read it. It prompted many honest discussions between us about how we see ourselves, the demons we carry, how simple words can be so damaging, and more.
