This is a nonfiction book filled with interesting pieces of trivia, arcane historical facts, and tidbits of little known knowledge, each little piece made bite-sized and easy to understand for the common man.The book has something for everybody, literally. The subjects contained in this book vary from art museums for only bad art, to zip-ties scaring away magpies, and from Andy George's $1500 sandwich to Zachary Taylor coining the term "First Lady". It has a handy index to find what you want, and the website resources for the author's material are listed thoroughly in the back if you are interested in learning more. Warning: such a diverse range of subjects does include several that are rather crude and/or adult in their nature, so this is not a book that children should read, as harmless as it may appear.On the negative side, I don't think that this book should be called an "encyclopedia", because it is very random in its layout and is not organized at all. Webster's 1828 Dictionary states that an encyclopedia must be alphabetized to fall under that name. Funk & Wagnalls Standard College Dictionary has a slightly broader definition: it says an encyclopedia has to be systematically arranged. This book is neither.Also on the negative side, the book sometimes goes to unreliable resources on the web (such as Twitter and YouTube), and several things that the author states as fact seem rather skeptical to me. I don't think the author is lying, not at all, and that isn't what I mean. I simply think that some of the information he was going on might have been exaggerated or incorrect. There's a lot of that on the internet.There were a few things that I didn't like about the book, but the pros outweigh the cons in my opinion. I'd give it 3 1/2 stars, or possibly 4.

I received this kindle edition for free in exchange for an honest review and wasn't disappointed. I have read many of this author's books and found them very addicting, because of his well researched facts. Bill O'Neill knows how to keep his readers intrigued. Every topic in the world is written about in an easy to read format, anyone can get a wealth of information easily with this. Kudos, as always to Mr. O'Neill

He has all kinds on all kinds of subjects. Presidents, Movies, Football, Baseball, whatever you like.

Steven H. Strogatz is professor of applied mathematics at Cornell University. He received his Ph.D. from Harvard University in 1986. I am using this book as a "practice-first" guide to mathematics for the guy in his thirties, who struggles to understand why his high education was not done right 15 years ago, and do it so by himself this time.Accompanied by the lectures on the subject (search the title on youtube), this is likely the best book on math out there for motivated unexperienced reader.It will throw you to many practical fields of mathematics, and, having enough time, one can continue wandering and hunting for different subjects while eating this dish chapter by chapter (or lecture by lecture). For me, who has the luxury of not following any education plan, this is a delicious experience.

I agree with what another reviewer said:"if all math books are written in this clarity, the number of students in physics/engineering would rise considerably".This is the one of the clearest textbooks I ever seen in my college life.Clear words, helpful figures, many examples, ...This book is perfect for self-study.

Preface: I'm a physicist first and a mathematician second, so rigor is less my focus than ideas. That said, this is the best math textbook I've ever read. I decided to start reading it the day before my class started, but by the time I walked into the class I was already to chapter 4 - the book was that easy to read. (I jumped into a higher level class because I knew I would be done the book in a week anyway.) If there was ever a math textbook I would recommend to people from outside of math, this would be it.

An outstanding book. I'm an empirical biologist with just a bit of (long distant) math background. This has been excellent source for me to supplement a systems biology course I am developing. I cannot say enough about how much I appreciate the appeal to intuition and specific examples and not just a series of one equation derivation after another. Well worth it!

This book was the textbook in a course on nonlinear dynamics that I took. The course covered most of chapters 2-8 (chapter 1 is an introduction and is very short), so please consider my comments from that context. Speaking personally as an individual student- I tend to rely very heavily on my textbooks for learning and generally read them deeply. This book was no exception.Overwhelmingly, the great strength of this book is the quality of the writing style. This is a very rare math book in that it is actually fun to read. The examples are for the most part very good- easy to follow and understand. The author focuses a lot on the big picture perspective of the techniques involved and does a superb job of developing a very good intuition and feel for nonlinear systems. In fact, the prose is so readable, I would not have any hesitation recommending this book for someone wanting to teach them self the topic (assuming the necessary background of course). I feel that this book could easily accommodate such a student.Another great strength of this book is the way that ideas build upon one another. The author has masterfully written a book in which your intuition about early concepts pave the way for understanding later concepts even though missing some ideas in the beginning will not cripple you in later chapters. (IE, in many books if you do not understand chapter 1, you will fail in chapter 2, etc...)The problems are very doable, but yet seem to capture the essence of ideas in the chapters well. This is in contrast to many books in which the easy problems are practically busy work, and the problems that teach you something require you to saw off your left foot. The author strikes a nice balance here. Another nice feature is that the author draws actual models from a broad range of disciplines to build the practice problem sets and worked examples.The only real complaint I have about this book (as a pure math guy), is that this book is VERY skimpy on the theory(as in proofs and connection with deeper ideas)- but I think this book is targeted to a non-mathematics or an applied math audience. Personally, I found this frustrating and somewhat unsatisfying, but consider the nature of the class/audience. The author does sprinkle some theory around, such as the occasional reference to Topology and a section on index theory- but don't blink, you might miss it. The author rarely provides proof for theorems, those that he does provide are generally very simple and seem to be provided for their intuitive value rather than rigorous completeness. I considered giving it 4 stars instead of 5 due to the lack of rigor, but both considering its intended audience and its effectiveness at building intuition dismissed that consideration quickly. If you are looking for a book that digs into the theory, this is definitely not the book for you- at least not as a primary reference.Another minor shortcoming (not so much a short coming as quality which is lacking which could make this book better) is that the book provides practice problems for use on a computer(appropriately) but does not provide any example code at all. This is not a big deal, a quick google search could easily provide you with a basic demonstration of the syntax necessary to plot a system using the language of your choice, but still. Personally, I would not let such a thing be a deal breaker for this book. (At least the author has not taken the other extreme and written the book entirely around one particular proprietary language!)Despite these shortcomings, I strongly recommend this book either as a primary text for a course in nonlinear dynamics targeted to a non-pure-math audience, or as a secondary reference for anyone. I think this is a great book that will serve you well!Oh, if the author is reading this post-ADD MORE COLOR PICTURES OF CHAOTIC SYSTEMS PLEASE!! I love looking at those!

I was referred to this book by a friend of mine who knew I liked the books of Malcolm Gladwell. I first read it near about when it came out, around 2002, and just got around to re-reading it. I had only remembered two of the stories from the book, so it was very similar to reading it again for the first time.The theme of this book is reflected in its three parts: Fallibility, Mystery and Uncertainty. Each part talks about a particular aspect of Gawande’s career as a surgeon that deals with the less-certain side of being a doctor. Each concept is accompanied by one or more anecdotal references to his own real-life cases that illustrate his point brilliantly.And that point is that doctors know a lot - but they don’t know everything. Their education and practical experience can help prepare them with knowledge, but skill comes from years of learned real-world practice. I could really sympathize with him and the stressors he has to deal with. I’ve been guilty as well of feeling my doctor must and should know everything that is right for me to do. The truth is a lot more complicated than that.This book doesn’t even take into consideration the patient frustrations with healthcare - cost, attention, etc. It really does focus on pulling the screen back and giving you a glimpse into the vast uncertainty that accompanies this sometimes wondrous profession.This is NOT a book that says, “I’m a surgeon. Here’s all the supercool things I’ve done and this is why I’m awesome and don’t you wish you could get me as your doctor?” This book shows the doctor, warts and all, and makes them much more human.

It is written in three sections.a. Fallibility (The shortcomings of physicians)b. Mystery (Mystery Illnesses)c. Uncertainty (Gray areas and diagnostic uncertainty)2. I get the distinct impression that the author wrote a series of essays and then chose the best of them as could be fit into this book. It's like he didn't write only as many "songs" as he needed for this "album." He had a whole bunch of them in a vault somewhere and then just pulled some number of them together and then made the concept of the "album" after the fact.***What can we learn from this book? Much, as it happens. I can give some of the things that popped out at me the most1. Medicine is an empirical science. A lot of things are learned/ decided on the fly and with more information they might have been decided differently. There are no algorithms or simple answers.2. There are questions about ways that surgeries can be set up. Do you train one surgeon to do many things, or do you train many surgeons (teams?) to do one thing only. The discussion of the hernia repair team and the way that they improved their efficiency by doing the same thing OVER AND OVER again (p. 35) is food for thought.3. The training of physicians has to happen on *someone*. And the training for procedures to be done on humans can only be done on humans. And yes, people who are poor and unable to purchase their own insurance are more likely to be guinea pigs. And that's just the reality of things.4. There are no clear mechanisms to sanction physicians when they are past their prime and start killing patients. This book is about 15 years old, but then (as now), government accountants and colleagues will catch the physician before any ethics/ disciplinary board.Verdict: Recommended. The fact that this book is still high priced in spite of being 15 years old is its strongest recommendation. The present reviewer is offering one more.

The author writes from the viewpoint of a resident and young surgeon covering such topics as When Doctors Make Mistakes, When Good Doctors Go Bad, Pain, Nausea, Obesity and the Ethics involved in end-of-life decisions. His excellent writing makes the hospital setting and the O.R. come very much alive. Doctors are portrayed as human beings with a high fallibility factor and surgeons are portrayed with very high confidence levels. Yet the doubts, the anxiety and the frustrations of the medical profession are also expressed very eloquently. His insight into the medical world is almost profound and his empathy with the patient is palpable. Gawande has written other medical books for the popular market that have gotten good reviews. I hope to read them soon.

As a former Navy Corpsman (Medic) attached to the USMC infantry, I have always had an interest in medicine, and science in general, and this book was a great insight into the medical and surgery field.As a young Corpsman with the Marines, I was thrust into medicine, and learned very quickly what did and did not work. "Watch one, do one, teach one" is how we were instructed to learn medical practices. From diagnosing (even though we couldn't "diagnose" as Line Corpsmen...we still did essentially) cellulitis, learning to place sutures, to removing infected toenails, I made mistakes, but generally our medical skills quickly flourished, and we were able to practice outstanding medicine for the grunts.Atul writes about this, and the decisions he had to make, which affect him to this day. As a surgeon and author, he actually cares about his patients, which is a great thing to have as a medical professional. While he doesn't touch on this very much in his book, his caring about the patients and following up is the mark of a true caregiver. For it is those doctors, medics, corpsmen, nurses, and other medical professionals that actually care and are empathic with their patients, yet know how to distance themselves when needed, that operate the best and can change medicine for the better.A truly great read, I would recommend this book to anyone interested in the healthcare system, surgery, medicine, and anyone who has ever worked in the medical field!

Whereas technology helped forestall crises in the past, it now uses up the very resources it's designed to preserve. Water desalination, for instance, requires energy intensive and releases many pollutants. Nuclear power would offer short-term hope but remains unpopular. The author sees only "radical behavior change" as a viable solution but does not say how this would work. Emmott's facts are enough to shake steely optimists, though the book's Malthusian pathos could be a bit cloying even for like-minded pessimists. (Sept.)

I too read this book in a single sitting of about one hour. I also have read a few of the reviews posted by other readers. From a pure scientific standpoint I agree professor Emmott could have added more references to back up the facts he has stated.This is always advisable and I am surprised he has not done so. Despite this he has presented the material in a manner that anyone can read and digest. Yes it may be a simple format but I think it's with good reason.Overall I feel I have to agree with most of what he has said. I am glad someone has finally had the $%lls to come out and state it how it really is ( I think others have previously but perhaps in a more refined manner ). I sense he is very frustrated, gobsmacked and deeply worried by the attitude of big corporations, politicians etc to the threat facing us all. Plus I agree humanity is to blame for the trouble we are in and that we ARE truly F%*KED. I am so relieved someone else agrees with what I have been thinking for years. The fact that the urgency and scope of the problem is STILL not getting across is why I believe he has written the book in the manner that he has.ALL civilizations have come and gone. I'm convinced ours will join them but how much of the rest of the inhabitants of the earth will we take with us and will there be anything left for life to start again ?

Short, direct, take no prisoners screed that lays out our core problem - there are already way too many of us and we are only making it worse. Malthus and Ehrlich were correct, although their inability or unwillingness to take into account human ingenuity made their timing terribly wrong, thus giving us a false - and arrogant - sense of security. This should be required reading for anybody that thinks climate change is the real problem. The earth is finite, and ultimately, so is our ability to increase our numbers infinitely. It's simple arithmetic.

This isn't really a book. It's more of a powerpoint broken into a book form. Literally maybe 15 pages of content in this thing. The content is good but nothing substantive that you could not find in many better and more in depth publications.

Concise, to the point and depressing.Every other author follows the dictate of journalism school: end on a positive note. Instead, Emmons tells it like it really is.Humans are not good at dealing with this type of crisis. Much easier to go into denial. Magical thinking is much more comfortable than acknowledge that humans are the planet's most destructive predator, hell bent on bringing about the sixth major extinction on planet Earth.Given our history, and the trends of population growth (exponential), resource depletion (we are currently using 1.5 Earths) and climate change, what informed person would bet on our survival?

I experienced this as critical reading, written in a massively accessible way.When you consider the enormous challenges we are currently facing and the unprecedented changes we must make in order to thrive - massive accessibility for a mass audience is critically important.This book serves its purpose perfectly. If you're looking for counter arguments and follow-up research, there is an abundance of it available. But I think we've moved past the "research" phase and it'll serve us to start taking massive action.

It's basically an informative power point. Not an actual book; It's a waste to publish this and waste so much paper and ink on it.

It is short and to the point, packed with statistics, a good reference to quote in conversations on environmental and especially human population topics.It spells doom and gloom but then I cannot see how we can possibly avoid that when the deterioration of the planet proceeds faster than the counter-measures taken by humans.

Quick and easy book to read, however, it is baffling why Emmott printed this book with a paragraph or less per page. Overall, the book is well done and will make you think critically about the paths our world is heading.

Me ha encantado la novela, no puedes parar de leerla hasta terminarla, pues la trama es bastante interesante, la vida de Camille muy sufrida por el maltrató físico de su padre y del cual tiene qué huir y es aquí donde todo cambia para ella y conoce a Bill que la ayuda a sobrevivir en las calles de Londres y al pasar los años conoce al amor de su vida y es donde empieza todo el caos. Te invito a que leas esta gran novela donde reirás, llorarás. 100% recomendada felicidades Sophie Saint Rose por esta hermosa historia.

Como siempre una estupenda historia sin duda lo es y de mis favoritas de echo , tanto que me la leí en un día jajaja es lo que tú pluma hace sophie que te engancha y una no para hasta que la termina sin duda alguna la recomiendo al 100% 😊 mil gracias por tus historias que nos dejan queriendo más y más , y esperando la que sigue por favor date prisa 🤗

Rawia Bishara is a treasure. I have been going to her Brooklyn restaurant, Tanoreen, for years. It is sublime. Her passion for cooking and the happiness of her customers shines through, whether you dine in her restaurant or read her cookbooks. Buy this. You will not regret it.

Having cooked several delicious recipes from the first cookbook from Rawia Bishara, I was excited to receive my copy of this second cookbook. Not often the case with cookbooks, this one was as good as her first! Not only is it such a visually appealing book, but the recipes are unique and yet simple enough for a novice like myself. Her recipe for Oil-Cured Chiles and Filet Mignon Shawarma Sliders were a huge hit with my guests and are the perfect appetizers for a party! I am so glad that I purchased this book. It was worth ever penny and I am planning on purchasing a few copies as holiday gifts for my friends!
