Dear ReadersI was first introduced to this title way back in 1972 by one of my physics professors from England. He was retiring that year and going back to England. ( A place where I wished I could have studied physics)And I remember asking him if he could recommend to me a book that would provide "Masters Problems". His response was to suggest I get a copy of "Leighton".(Which I eventually did.)He then went on to say that he thought the level of the problems in this book were fairly challenging. Something like, "there are problems in there I think that even Leighton can't solve". (I doubted his word but didn't say anything at the time)I have solved a few since that time but not all. Certainly the book is not trivial. And what I particualrly like about it are the spacings of the homework problems and how they are distributed throught the book.Much like Elmer Anderson's " Modern Physics and Quantum Mechanics".In this way Leighton allows the student to "pace themselves". Again, the book is perfect for self-study.( In fact as in Anderson there are some answers provided to some of the homework problems.) Not to mention that it is a wonderful classic. The publisher McGraw-Hill did a "lion of a job" on that series.Truly high quality paper and binding. Leighton is a co-author of the celebrated " Feynman Lectures on Physics" along with Mathew Sands. The Book is pure 1950's genre. When you look at it and hold it in your hands you feel awed by the fact that it has been part of that unique historical evolution of American Physics. Professor Leighton has even included a section on Quantum Electrodynamics. This topic the "Evolution of American Physics" is one that never ceases to fascinate me. Not only for its scientific achievements but the dramatically political upheavals that corresponded to what was accomplishedin physics at that time. With Best RegardsSouthern Jameson West
FEYNMAN 3 VOLUMES LECTURE, VOL2 ELECTRODYNAMICS, VOL3 QM, combine with leighton principle of modern physics, if the reader has studied halliday physics & university physics, he has a well preparation for the study of QED. QED is the study of photon & electon, perhaps can give some explanation on lightning & thumterstrom. helping dog to know more of the universe.
Looking at the other reviews written about this excellent book, I will add my own thoughts.I took the course (I believe fro Prof. Leighton himself) in the fall of 1962. I was a first-year graduate student in chemistry, fresh from UCLA, and thought I knew SOME physics. In the class in Bridge building (I think) I was surrounded by a fearsome bunch of Caltech undergraduates, who were a lot smarter than me. Well, I really learned a lot from Professor Leighton and from his book, which, a little worse for the wear, with signs where my bicycle handbrakes brushed it many times later at Stanford, is still on my bookshelf in Alabama. I have in it an obituary of Prof. Leighton (1919-1997) from Caltech News. Bright man, next to other very very bright and accomplished people (Profs. Feynman, Gell-Mann, Zwicky, Mößbauer, Fowler, and so many others). My copy is full of annotated answers to problems, as I worked them out, a physical chemist who would have been proud to be accepted by physicists. I am sure that Prof Leighton could solve most of the problems interspersed in his book. His explanations of special relativity and the Dirac equation were particularly elegant, brief, and to the point. Maybe imitation is the best form of flattery. When I worked on my own book (A Physical Chemist's Toolbox, Wiley, 2012) I very consciously used Prof. Leighton's model of interspersing problems to MAKE the students understand the subject by WORKING OUT the details. It makes a book shorter, more challenging, but not too "popular'. It is a shame that my own book was written after Prof. Leighton's death. As it is, I say to him now "That is how a good book should be" - terse, clear, encyclopedic, a great resource for the ages.
I don't understand why this great classic was allowed to go out of print. It is a real loss for graduate physics students. There is nothing like it in print today. Dover should republish it. The only sections that are out of date are the ones at the end of the book on particle physics (understandable since the book was published in 1959).
Old now but very well written.
