Burtynsky has surpassed himself with the quality and content of the photos in this fabulous book. Steidel's production compliments and enhances the photos. The only sour note is Margaret Atwell's "poetry" which is smattered throughout the text and seems to consist of rather detailed and obscure/obtuse sentences being split into new lines at non-obvious places. It is soooooo b.a.d.
This book was purchased for a graduation gift for a very special young man who is receiving an honours degree in Environmental Science. He has also been very interested in art and photography and has been a huge fan of Burtynsky's work behind the cameras - whether in still life or moving video. So, especially with the quality of the book, I think it's been a wonderful choice.
Burtynsky's photographs are not just interesting and attracting. They are powerfully provocative. You will never be the same after reading the text in this book, absorbing these photographs, discovering the Margaret Atwood's poetry after each section, and contemplating the implications of it all.
