The reader gets to know Tulshuk Lingpa, guru and leader of the expedition, as well as several of his companions. I enjoyed the detailed account of their journey, and the way the author's interviews with the expedition members are weaved into the story. I don't know much about Tibetan Buddhism, but was intrigued by the premise of the book. It reminded me of an eerily similar event in my native country, Cuba, where members of a spiritual group went to the Escambray mountains in search of a paradise of sorts, and with similar results --through there are no glaciers in Cuba. it helped me understand how far people can go when a belief guides them. Can there really be a crack between two worlds? Quién sabe. Highly recommended!
I got this book because of my interest in Tibetan Buddhism and culture. I love the way it was an actual account with real people. Learning about the "crazy llama", Tulshuk Lingpa, gave me a very different view of a radical holyman. This book certainly kept revealing that nothing is as it appears to be......keeps us wondering what is real and true. I personally believe there are other worlds in other dimensions that we can enter under certain conditions. Could the avalanche that killed Tulshuk Lingpa so unexpectedly be the catalyst that propelled him into the paradise that was just a step away?
Compelling story with photographs of actual people involved which adds another layer of reality/ incredulosity. I will be thinking of this story when I venture next month to my first trekking trip in the Himalayas.
As soon as I started reading this book I was taken on a journey far from the everyday and brought right back to where I started, much richer for the experience. Every word describing the "crazy treasure finder" resonated with me on a level of direct experience, of beautiful truth. The words sang from the page with vibrancy. Some may fare differently in their experience but at the very minimum this is a fabulous journey of hidden lands, powers and traditions. At the most, it is a book highlighting the truth of what we all seek: liberation, and the journey toward that including the humility and power to transform and heal others (and ourselves). Whether we will find liberation in far-flung lands of immortality, or right here in the everyday, where the book ultimately leaves us, is left to the reader. An absolute treasure.
A wonderfully told tale of an extraordinary search. The legends and myths of hidden valleys, secret gardens, and parallel worlds can be found in every culture. Thomas Shor has documented a fascinating account of an eccentric lama determined to find the hidden valley on Mt Kanchenjanga on the border between Nepal and Sikkim. He tells of the faith his followers have in him and their willingness to leave everything - property, belongings, family - and follow him into the cliffs and glaciers of one of the world's highest mountains. They know that this valley is a garden in which they will find everything this world denies them; they will live there without want or fear.Shor also includes the views of an anthropologist who suggests that this myth of finding a hidden utopia was already accomplished centuries ago when the nomads of the Tibetan plateau stumbled upon the lush valleys of what is now Sikkim. Instead of suggesting that the Lingpa mislead all those people, Shor leaves the reader with an open question of the possibility that these hidden valleys could still exist. We just don't know how to access these parallel realities yet.Richard Friedericks, Author - Windhorse Warrior (about resistance to Chinese occupation of Tibet during the 1950's)
This is one of my favorite books. Tulshik Lingpa was an amazing person, it is so wonderful to hear his story. This story will definitely benefit your Dharma path
Thomas brings the mystery of Tibet within reach. Then, just as you think you might grasp an idea, a concept, a meaning and a way then someone tells him of another moment another opening and what we think of as reality is shattered over and over as each chapter unfolds.Thank you for the months of travel and hours you spent delving into the lives of everyone presented in order to share their stories.Riveting couldn't put it down.
I love this book. The author did a great job of pursuing this literally incredible story, walking the edge of what's believable and not and still leaving us to wonder...portraying the tantalizing, amazing character whose vision and practice transcended most everything around him.
