Straightforward text and vivid imagery combine for a powerful, achingly honest memoir. Spare artwork devoid of color other than beige, gray, or sepia backgrounds reflects Green's despair. Controlled linework gives way to arresting, chaotic imagery. A cloud of scribbled black lines, symbolizing Green's ever-present stream of self-criticism, threatens to engulf her. Lighter Than My Shadow is Katie Green’s story of her life with anorexia. As a kid, she had the typical struggles with her family over finishing dinner and changing tastes. She was an artist from a young age, spending time alone in her imagination. Sometimes the things she found scared her, and she sought order and rules and rituals as a way to control her world.Her happy childhood was disrupted by oncoming puberty. Her best friend was growing up faster than Katie was, which drove them apart. Then there were bullying boys at school, where Katie’s achievement singled her out for more negative attention. Even her friends were catty to her about her lack of interest in the opposite sex. It all added up to a recipe for seeking ever more control over the one thing in her life she can control absolutely: what she eats. At first, her discipline, giving up junk food to start, made her feel healthy, but it soon came to consume her.Lighter Than My Shadow has a very different look from most graphic novels, as you can see at the book’s website. Her figures are simple, dot-eyed stand-ins that resemble toys, but they have an impressive sense of motion and emotion. The poses are realistic and well-observed.Most of the book is printed on grey or sepia paper, giving the whole thing a gloomy overtone that suits the material and focuses attention on the central figures. There are no gutters, and the borders between panels resemble torn paper edges. The despair that overtakes Green is shown as a black scribble, a simple but potent device that can be used as an overhanging cloud or a looming threat. Later on, she draws herself with a yawning open mouth in her midsection, the perfect image for how thinking about food and eating begins to define her.Green’s portrayal of her life is very approachable, which makes her gradual slide into disorder all the more understandable. Her depiction of her mental state, of how all this made sense to her and even how some attempts at recovery were just more ways of trying to be good, is incredibly truthful. The straightforward art makes this readable by even those not used to comics. I hope this book reaches outside the usual graphic novel readers, because its message of Katie’s journey could help a lot of girls and women realize they’re not alone in their concerns and mental struggles. Anorexics sometimes feel as though they want to erase themselves, and the comic format is a perfect venue to illustrate that literally and symbolically. This is a big book at around 500 pages, but it reads super quickly and is super engaging. It battles some really rough subject material (including, of course, anorexia, but also bingeing and rape). The subject matter is presented somewhat bluntly; the comic does not shy away from drawing uncomfortable illustrations, but by doing that, it feels very honest and real.

Katie Green's courage to talk about her life and what happened to her should be congratulated for sharing this very personal topic . This book could be the encouragement for others that can relate to this book, to be able to go forward in life. I read this in one sitting. Super worth reading. Extremely educational for all ages about the deep negative impacts of problematic societal/gender expectations of women and sexual abuse. Art is amazing also!

Beautifully illustrated, this book deals with the harsh realities of eating disorders and sexual abuse. It is so important to bring these taboo subjects out into the light, and I appreciate the authors openness about her experience. I read through the book first and then my 14 year old daughter wanted to read it. It prompted many honest discussions between us about how we see ourselves, the demons we carry, how simple words can be so damaging, and more.

An incredible emotional journey and story. Beautiful artwork with just the right amount of silence and space for deep reflection.

This book has an excellent street map of Budapest that we used daily, and was a great little pocket guide for hitting the highlights of most everything we wanted to see. I used my sister's more comprehensive guide for better detail on the places we were seeing, so it's not great for that.

We got this book for our trip to Budapest. This book was incredibly helpful! There is a pull out map inside that was really helpful. We loved the size of it as well. Much smaller and easier to carry.

My wife and I enjoyed carrying the small size resource around as we walked this amazing city.

I don’t usually post reviews but this pocket guide was very useful. Definitely get it if you are going to Budapest. It’s small enough to fit in a purse and yet complete enough to guide you through the city.

In 2006, Ford brought in Alan Mulally to help rescue Ford Motor Company from itself. Mulally’s first task was to change Ford’s management style from “every man for himself” to “every man for Ford”. Ford management’s transition from hiding problems (so you didn’t get fired) to acknowledging problems (so you could fix them) could only happen as the braver managers took the leap of faith that Mulally wouldn’t fire them for admitting the serious problems that existed within their own areas of responsibility. Reading about that process was interesting on its own; but, as I was reading, I was also thinking “these guys don’t yet know that the Great Recession is coming”. That event took the drama of Ford’s attempts to survive its past missteps to a whole new level. Wonderful, interesting and exciting book about Alan Mulally, Ford Motor Company, the auto industry and corporate America.

Growing up in the Detroit area I've seen Ford both at their best and their worst. Their incredible transformation over the last decade was nothing short of incredible. I have to confess that this book was a complete stunner. I purchased it hoping to get a decent idea of what Ford went through during the economic crisis of 2006-2009, but this book proved to be a detailed, engrossing story that I could barely put down. Anyone who follows the news is well aware of the debacle that was the US auto industry in 2007, but Hoffman provides such depth in describing the issues facing the industry and the corporate in-fighting that it almost reads like fiction.You are instantly endeared to Bill Ford as a man that can put aside his own ego for the good of the company he loves, and you root for Alan Mullaly throughout the book even though we already know Ford made it through to the other side. His belief in his system and his ability to completely change the corporate culture of a multi-national company are truly inspiring.Outside the story itself, there are all sorts of interesting factoids to be found such as how the common stock was set up to ensure the Ford family maintained voting rights, and how neither Chrysler or General Motors would've survived if President Obama had stuck to President Bush's original requirements. The book delivers on so many different levels. I highly recommend to anyone with an interest in business or just an interest in a great story.

Author Bryce Hoffman details the incredible American comeback story of Ford Motor Company. His focus is largely on Alan Mulally, whom Ford hired away from Boeing in September 2006 to take over as their New CEO. Hoffman chronicles the events leading to Bill Ford's decision to step down as CEO and go outside the company and the auto industry to hire Mulally.The author describes the changes Mulally made to Ford's corporate culture as well as the approach he took to changing the mentality and necessity to work together for the survival and future of the company. Hoffman narrates the risks the company had to take to be able to keep it running. I especially relished the narrative of the three auto industry CROw's appearance before the Congressional and Senate hearings on the fall of 2008, when General Motors and Chrysler were asking for a federal bailout to keep those two automakers alive.Hoffman takes the reader into 2011 at a time when Ford was back in the black and on much stronger ground. He gives Mulally much of the credit for this amazing turnaround, but also praised Bill Ford and the other heirs of Henry Ford. Hoffman gives credit to many others within Ford for their courage and contributions to the comeback. This was the most interesting and enlightening books I've read about the American auto industry.

I'm enjoying reading about Alan Mulally.CEOs, CFO's, COOs, mid-level managers and especially consultants--there's something for everyone in this book.Some of my favorite points:1. Bill Ford was humble and willing to step away and letting someone else take over. He was great in keeping the family unified during thick and thin.2. What can we say about Mulally that hasn't been written elsewhere? I loved reading about the BPR process and his One-Ford strategy. He didn't just clean house either. He made a change here and there. A couple leaders left on their own. A couple were elevated. There's much we can learn about Mulally's leadership style.3. The bailouts - I found myself getting frustrated as I re-lived the bailouts of GM and Chrysler. Ford was at a complete disadvantage once the government took control of GM. Yet, Ford stuck to their plan.4. And speaking of that recession, it's as though Mulally had to navigate not one, but two turnarounds.That one and their serious issues when he first came on board in 2006.5. We know the rest of the story. Mark Fields is now the new CEO. Mulally embraced his abilities from day one. So this has a great ending. The fire didn't go out through a changing of the guard.I'm still amazed at how one person could change a leviathan in a stodgy industry. Sure, he built a team and had the full support of the Chairman. But this guy was/is unreal.I thought Gordon Bethune was legendary. I think Mulally's accomplishments are even more impressive since he turned around Boeing too.I also recommend the Audible version too as I listened to it while reading the Kindle version.

First, I would like to thank counselorchick, Kevin Johnson, bankee and any others who have obvious resentments towards AA. It is a program developed in the 1930’s and has been the most effective treatment for their members. It is a fellowship of men and women who have the same desire to stay sober. People who follow the program and commit to it eventually become happy, joyous and free. The program has evolved over time to what it is today. People who are cursed with this disease are NOT able to drink in moderation. I am not saying that I completely believe in the entire philosophy but most of it has merit. I think it is opalling and disgraceful for anyone to blame AA for hurting more people than they’ve helped! Are you f*****g kidding me? There is only one person to blame for the behaviors we exubed. Look in the mirror for the guilty party. The negativity in these posts truly proves how restless, irritable and discontent you are. I’m sure there are other programs that successfully help those with the disease of addiction. AA is not for everyone. It is also never AA’s fault when someone relapses. We are still there at every meeting, trying to help the next sick and suffering person.Your portrayal of the “program” is flawed and inaccurate to say the least. There have been 100’s of thousands of people who are now happy, joyous, free and living a life free of anger, depression, sadness and fear.

Simpley put this book will save your life and inspire you to find a path free of addiction . The first half of the book is how it works in AA the second half is all inspirational stories that truely do inspire you to live a better free of addiction life. Often at first when I first considered I might have an addiction problem I read the stories in the back of the book . I found every story I read was about me in some way . After a few reads I knew it was time to confront my addiction issues . Becuse of this book I am now free of my alcohol addiction and starting to piece my life back together . Any time I feel weak or need a bit fo inspiration I open the book and read for a while .This book is the back bone to AA and 12 step programs it will sve your life if you are honest ans willing . Its said you must hit rock bottom before you can make the journey to recovery but maybe if you read this book you will find a way that you can avoid the horor of the rock bottom experience. Good luck to you may you find the peace and serenity you so deserve in life give this book a shot and you will find a new way of life .

I'm not an alcoholic, but a good friend of mine suggested that I read this to gain a better understanding of "what she's all about." I'm truly glad I did. Not only did it deliver on her claim in spades, but it provided me with one hell of a perspective on everything she and so many others have dealt with, and just how vital a group like Alcoholics Anonymous is. I love reading things that provide me with that level of insight.

I’ve been sober almost six months. Thank god for AA and other such programs.About this book- it explains everything. First half talks about how AA came to be and last half shares inspirational stories of other addicts and alcoholics who have worked the program and now lead sober lifestyles. Very helpful and motivating.For anyone out there struggling with addiction, even if you aren’t ready to seek help, read this book. You at least will know you aren’t alone.

I'm so grateful for this book. My sweet daddy suffered from alcoholism and died unrecovered. Growing up in that, I had a lot of resentment and unresolved pain. This book showed me that my Dad was sick, and it helped me see that even though I do not drink- I was effected by alcoholism. Since I do not have this allergy/disease, I didn't understand it. It makes more sense to me now, and it has helped me on my healing journey. I cannot recommend this enough! I know you get audio chapters on Amazon (I believe it is the 1st Edition). I love the 4th edition. I believe it is worth buying even if you can hear it for free.

Don't get the Kindle version if you need to refer to page numbers. Cryptic "locations" (see pic) will not help if you want to use the "Big Book" for any serious work or study. There are plenty of free or online versions available that are paginated. As far as the actual content goes, who am I to argue with the cornerstone manuscript for a fellowship that has proven to help millions worldwide. IMHO modern medicine will never be able to come close to this free and ubiquitous prescription for dealing with ALL addictions (in MY lifetime at least).

Written many years ago and still relevant for todays alcoholic. I felt the book was telling my story and many times I was struck by the economy and perfection of the prose. i.e. 'a vision for you.' In my opinion this is very much an inspired novel that speaks directly to the alcoholic and offers a proven method of recovery and life seemingly beyond the reach of the active alcoholic....Indispensable information for the suffering alcoholics looking for recovery.

I was very disappointed that they showed images of a first edition big book published in 1946 (4 images) Also in the description, it clearly says it was published January 1st, 1946. But when it arrived, it was a reproduction (copy) of a 1st edition. If I could give 0 stars I would. Very misleading and deceptive. Still working on trying to get refunds. I bought 4, ($266.00 total) and have only been refunded for 3. Bad seller!!!!!
