From Publishers Weekly

This sometimes sexy, sometimes dry, but often lush collection of stories by Caribbean gay and lesbian writers is a mixed bag. Certain selections, such as Wesley E.A. Crichlow's History, (Re)Memory, Testimony, and Biomythography and Lawrence La Fountain-Stokes's heavily footnoted Postdata: metatextual wings of a dove will likely put off all but academics. More accessible are Michelle Cliff's Ecce Homo, a tale of star-crossed male lovers in Rome during WWII, which has the romantic distance of a sepia photograph, and José Alcántara Almánzar's portrayal of a transvestite in Lulú or the Metamorphosis. Many of the writings from the 1990s tackle oppression and are tragic in tone. Shani Mootoo's sassy patois story, Out on Main Street, about how she and her girlfriend negotiate their sexuality in a sweet shop, is refreshingly upbeat, and Audre Lorde's two stories, one about rebuilding in St. Croix after hurricane Hugo, the other a meditation on home and her mother's nostalgia for Grenada—neither of which addresses sexuality—widen the book's somewhat claustrophobic focus. Review

“With excerpts from the work of luminaries like Audre Lorde, Reinaldo Arenas, Michelle Cliff, Assotto Saint, Achy Obejas, and Aldo Alvarez, there's no question this anthology has serious literary heft, beyond its import as a first-of-a-kind collection. But it's the lesser-known (and, in some cases, never-before translated) contributors who add value. . . . everal contributions are emphatically academic, footnotes and all, but these provide ballast for Glave's authentic, eclectic collection.” - Richard Labonte“Glave has given us a valuable record of the real beauty and brutality that lurks behind the travel posters.” - Harry E. Baldwin, Frontiers“Our Caribbean will likely become a classic compilation and a must-read for anyone who wants to learn more about what it means to be from the Antilles region of the world and to find a home in the LGBT community.” - Rachel Pepper, Curve“You need to take time with this collection. It is a delicious gathering of voices, all different, but with interweaving themes. You cannot rush this experience. From the luscious, sexy racy prose to the cutting edge politics, every line has shape and depth and plays upon you long after the reading. This book will rock you, rock within you, like This Bridge Called My Back, edited by Cherie Moraga, did in the 1970’s”. - Cathie Koa Dunsford, Asia and Pacific Writers Network“[An] important and amazing collection. . . . All of the essays, fiction, and poems in this collection impress, and with this text, Glave has created a very important addition to the growing shelf of international GLBT literature.” - Michael G. Cornelius, Bloomsbury Review“You don’t have to be gay, lesbian, or Caribbean . . . to appreciate this anthology, though it is certainly a seminal contribution to the fields of Caribbean literature and gay and lesbian studies. Most of its contents are worth reading for the drama, sensitivity, and complexity required of such identities.” - Emily Raboteau, American Book Review“Our Caribbean is a superb anthology. Thomas Glave does not exaggerate when he writes that this is ‘a book that I and others have been waiting for and have wanted for all our lives.’ Here we have a book that makes literal the ongoing necessity to write ‘against silence.’”—Elizabeth Alexander, author of American Blue: Selected Poems“Traversing boundaries of geography, history, language, and desire, Thomas Glave has assembled a poignant testament of how we dare to love differently and yearn for justice in the same breath...Necessary and timely.”—M. Jacqui Alexander, author of Pedagogies of Crossing: Meditations on Feminism, Sexual Politics, Memory, and the Sacred“Our Caribbean will likely become a classic compilation and a must-read for anyone who wants to learn more about what it means to be from the Antilles region of the world and to find a home in the LGBT community.” (Rachel Pepper Curve)“[An] important and amazing collection. . . . All of the essays, fiction, and poems in this collection impress, and with this text, Glave has created a very important addition to the growing shelf of international GLBT literature.” (Michael G. An amazing book. As a Saint Lucian who has lived abroad for the past nine years, I've been desperately searching for literature that represents the voices of LGBTQ Caribbean people. While this book focused more on the larger islands as opposed to small islands, I found it a valuable resource as well as an important critique of Caribbean culture. I currently recommend this book to EVERY West Indian that I meet and I would qualify it as one of the most important works of Caribbean literature today.

Review

"One of Choice's Outstanding Academic Titles for 2006""Runner-Up for the 2006 National Jewish Book Award in History""[A] dazzlingly erudite study of the many ramifications of the Purim odyssey from medieval times to our days. Horowitz's ambitious book achieves two accomplishments: the documentation of 1,500 years of Christian and Jewish interpretations of the knottiest, and naughtiest, sections of the Book of Esther, and then the chronicling of the actual social-historical consequences of those interpretations; that is, how Purim was used and abused through the ages. [Horowitz's is] a scrupulously honest voice, dealing in exemplary fashion with an important subject that has been ignored by scholars precisely because of its extreme delicacy. Horowitz has enriches us with a model of historical scholarship. Anything but reckless, Reckless Rites is a rare gem of academic work that will make a real difference."---Allan Nadler, Forward"Reckless Rites is a provocative volume, rich in historical detail. Horowitz tells a story, not without humor, that attempts to connect events of the distant past with contemporary conflicts. Unusual for a work of history, Reckless Rites is also a good read."---Irven M. Resnick, AJS Review"Reckless Rites is an excellent read, and for a book on such a serious subject not devoid of humor. . . . [I]t's most important purpose . . . is to throw a very large bucket of cold water over the misconceptions and the willful misreading of history in which we all too easily indulge."---Rabbi Dr. Charles Middleburgh, Jewish Chronicle"In his new book, Elliot Horowitz attempts to undermine the conventional wisdom about Jews and violence. Focusing on Purim, he convincingly shows that the image passed down over the centuries, of Jewish passivity and nonviolence during the medieval period, is, if not wrong, at least in need of correction. . . . [A] thought-provoking book, whose trees are often as memorable as the forest."---Kalman Neuman, Jerusalem Report"The book is a valuable contribution to what appeared to be an already enormous volume of religious history. The author's presentation of a well-researched and thoroughly analyzed history of Jewish violence that accompanies a sacred festival makes this an extraordinary book."---Willem F M Luyt, Studia Historiae Ecclesiasticae"Elliott Horowitz's learned, humane, and exciting book will rattle many platitudes and disturb many pieties. Purim will never be quite the same; and the complications that Horowitz introduces into the history of Jewish self-representation will be ferociously debated for many years to come. Horowitz's lack of interest in edification is itself edifying; his love of truth is fully the match of his love of tradition. Reckless Rites is a model of the lost art of troublemaking scholarship."―Leon Wieseltier"This is a book of tremendous importance that explores some of the most significant themes in Jewish history, especially the relations between Jews and Christians and the question of Jewish passivity and meekness. Horowitz disputes scholarly and popular accounts that ascribe these characteristics to Jews, in part by showing that both Jews and Christians have had polemical and apologetic motives in making such representations. This book represents a vitally significant reorientation of Jewish historiography. It will be controversial, no doubt, but it is certain to be a turning point in the field."―Daniel Boyarin, Hermann P. and Sophia Taubman Professor of Talmudic Culture, departments of Near Eastern Studies and Rhetoric, University of California, Berkeley"Reading Elliott Horowitz is always a treat and an education. He has an unusually keen eye for topics that other scholars have bypassed, and his work reveals extraordinarily wide reading―not only of Jewish sources but also texts that few Jewish historians would bother opening. And he follows the sources wherever they lead, regardless of conclusions that may startle or even affront readers. Reckless Rites will raise the eyebrows and perhaps elevate the blood pressure of some readers, but it illuminates dark corners of the Jewish past."―Marc Saperstein, Charles E. Smith Professor of Jewish History and Director of the Judaic Studies Program, George Washington University

This book, subtitled Purim and the Legacy of Jewish Violence, everything is viewed through the prism of the violence inflicted by the Jews upon their enemies at the end of Esther. While arguably, the violence at the end is only a minor part of the story for some that aspect has clouded everything about the Book of Esther and Purim. First Horowitz looks at how the Book was viewed by non-Jews. Some had a very negative view due to the Jewish revenge. They considered that motif, un-biblical (read non-Christian). Horowitz goes through each of the characters and how first non-Jews interpreted their actions. For instance, Mordechi was treated rather harshly by many of these commentators as was Esther due to her passivity. What is especially fascinating is how these non-Jewish understandings, at times, crept into Jewish thought as well. Thus, Horowitz documents Jews parroting these rather un-Jewish, at it were, interpretations.Horowitz then tackles the overarching theme of Amalek and how this has been understood throughout history. Some hold there is no obligation of destroying Amalek today while others are willing to label any perceived enemy of Jews as deserving of the harsh consequences of Amalek. Some of these examples are rather disturbing. After dealing with the Book of Esther specifically, Horowitz turns his focus to Jewish practice on Purim. Specifically, he deals with Jewish violence or violent acts on Purim directed at non-Jews. He provides a discussion of the stereotype of the "mild" (read the wimp) Jew including its origins and whether it is borne out by history. He then discusses numerous, diverse examples spanning from the 5th century until today of Jewish violence. Some is not physical violence, instead it is host desecration or general enmity of non-Jewish symbols while other, most recently Barukh Goldstein is physical violence in its worst form.In an effort to play down some of these incidents, we have Jewish historians who decided to avoid discussion of such matters, or at times downplay their significance. However, in light of the many examples here, it is very difficult to ignore such examples. Horowitz is very convincing in the scope of this idea and how prevalent this is. It is especially telling when tracing and seeing how systematically Jews have decided to sweep under the rug these examples, it demonstrates that censorship is not limited to any one group and even amongst supposedly dispassionate scholars, they too can fall prey to their own biases. The detail and research is amazing , Horowitz leaves no stone unturned. All in all, this book sheds new light of the story of Purim, the Book of Esther and Jewish history. It provides a new way of viewing the story of Esther and Jewish ideas towards violence.

Horowitz is one of the most original historians of Jewish cultural and intellectual history writing today. This book is in turn surprising, unnerving and enchanting, and disposes of pious presuppositions about the changing image and force of violence in Jewish religious thought. A tour de force.

Elliot Horowitz tries to make a new reading of Jewish history as a whole. He wants to argue for the idea that violence on the part of Jews has been in the Diaspora an important and predominant factor. However the number of illustrations he can muster to prove his point is few. And what he does instead is provide a skewed misreading of Diaspora Jewish history as whole. It may be true that Jewish history for two thousand years consists in more than victimization. But there is no proportion whatsoever between the horrifying violence done to Jews in these years to the trifling in comparison violence done by them.

I through this book in the trash after reading part way through it. I ama Christian who teaches adult Jewish studies courses including a 22-weekcourse on antisemitism. In my opinion this is antisemitism at its worstby an author with a Jewish surname. (I personally question if it actually written by a Jew - if so I'd say he has a great deal of self-hatred).The Jews represent less than 1% of the world's population and never havehad much more than this. To believe they (as victims of non-Jewish persecution for more than 2000 years)have done all this violence to non-Jews is ridiculous. They've spent most of their history hunkered down infear. This book will accomplish nothing but fan the flames of antisemitismand is disgusting.

The Green Library Planner: What Every Librarian Needs to Know Before Starting to Build or Renovate

Review

This book's subtitle is a big boast for such a slim volume, but Carr (executive director, library services, Comm. Coll. of Spokane) deftly guides librarians, building managers, renovators and everyone else involved in library renovation or construction on all matters green. Most library managers are forced into the necessity of learning facility maintenance on the fly—renovation knowledge is hard gained. Carr draws on her Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) accreditation and teaching experience to provide basic information, project checklists, tips, and extensive resources. Her chapters are organized by subject, including site assessment, energy and lighting, HVAC, green materials, indoor environmental quality, water conservation and quality, construction management, and building operations and maintenance. From everyday modifications to improve efficiency to major infrastructure renovations, the coverage will aid library managers. When a manager can show environmental awareness while being fiscally conservative, funding just might be a little easier to obtain. VERDICT Although pricey, this is an essential addition to the shelves of library administrators and facility managers in libraries of all sizes, as well as for relevant graduate school courses. (Library Journal)The Green Library Planner is designed for anyone interested in library design, but lacking architectural, construction or engineering expertise. It aims to introduce the rationale for green buildings, its elements and the language used in the field. It does this in sections, so you can read the entire book or just focus on the part that you need. . . .It covers a wide range of items within each section and. . . .is thorough in this. Each section has detailed references that give readers the opportunity to further explore the subject if they wish. It also includes practical checklists, illustrative examples and space for project notes to help make the concepts real. . . .For any librarian interested in or involved in a green building project, The Green Library Planner will give the knowledge needed to become more involved in the project. For those planning a project, this book will give what is needed to ask the right questions. Whether renovating or building a new library, reading The Green Library Planner should be on the librarian’s must-read list. (Australian Library Journal)The Green Library Planner: What Every Librarian Needs to Know before Starting to Build or Renovate is. . . .a well-organized planner that not only provides in-depth resources but also introduces us to sustainability and green practices. . . .Carr does not make assumptions about the reader’s expertise and approaches each topical area by first defining the problem in a global context and relating the role we each play as individuals and as an institutional stakeholder. Throughout the book, she examines the complex systems that make up a building and the environment in and around the building in a clear easy to understand manner. Just enough information is conveyed on a topic or in a definition to achieve a functional understanding. Carr makes it easy to seek out additional information or delve deeper into a concept through citations and resources at each chapter’s conclusion. Carr wonderfully acknowledges each topic’s complexities and is not prescriptive. Each institution must respond to its own community priorities. Carr’s style is to guide you, provide the resources for further investigation, hold up positive examples, and then challenge you to think about your community and your challenges. . . .The Green Library Planner delivers on Carr’s goals to provide a work that covers 'the major aspects of green building as it applies to building libraries, renovating them, and operating them sustainably.' It is a work that uses terms and concepts in an easy to understand manner that is applicable to a wider audience and all stakeholders in our environment. (Technical Services Quarterly)Mary M. Carr has written a valuable guide for managers of community resource organizations—particularly libraries—but certainly applicable in many aspects to the work of schools, community centers or museums. Carr has the personal experience as a LEED-AP and a library greening advisor to offer good resources, examples, and perspective. . . . The topic of environmentally-sustainable building and management practices is far too complex for any book to make a thorough study, but this one is detailed, thoughtful and realistic. The rest can only be filled-in by the integrated team involved in a particular project. . . . The definitions in each section are particularly helpful, and the checklists and resource lists are valuable tools for readers planning to implement these ideas. (Sustainable Museums Blog)This is a solidly written guide by librarian Carr who provides extensive resources as well as examples at the end of each chapter of libraries that follow green design practices. The author does a great job breaking down the often misunderstood topic of 'green building' into manageable pieces through the organization of the book, which starts off with fundamental concepts and moves on to specific topics such as lighting and air quality. The author defines key terms, provide resources for continued research, and includes questions for reflection and 'project notes' based on material from the chapter. ... there is helpful information in this title for everyone to use in one way or another. (VOYA)The Green Library Planner by Mary M. Carr is a welcome addition to the literature of 21st century library building design and construction. Her clear, casual style makes the content easy to read while at the same time clearly explaining the complex topic of sustainable design. The importance of sustainability not only to libraries but to everyone is best reflected in a quote from the first chapter: 'Man does not weave this web of life. He is merely a strand of it. Whatever he does to the web, he does to himself.' (Ann Hamilton, Co-chair, ACRL-LLAMA Interdivisional Committee on Building Resources)I learned a lot!!! The breadth of green issues and the resources are incredible. (Julie, 2016-2017 Presi)

I was looking for something silly with good sex and a somwhat storyline, and found this author Kevin J. Taylor. The women are sexy and the are are drawn with very big glands..odd? The book's storylines are simple and don't expect much as sex is the primary thing for the characters. I like it and will purchase another to give a better judgement as this is my first by this author. This drawings are in black & white as I thought it would be in color. However, it was what I was looking for in a graphic novel...sex and a simple storyline. Hope the next one is good or better.

all lovely, wish it had the whole catalog.

more fantastic artwork with on time delivery

Taylor does what he does best, lots of great sex scenes and hot dialogue. I just wish this book would have been in color like Girl: Second Coming.

I Love It!

Awesome Sauce

Hot, sexy,and amazing

It was in 1991 when I first came across Kevin Taylor and his creation Girl in a comic book store. I was old enough to enter the so-called adult section of the store and to say I was very disappointed with what they had was an understatement. Alot of the adult comics either were one-note sex romps or too much talking and not enough action. It took me seceral visits before I was finally able to find the one title older friends have been telling me about. Issue #1 of Girl was there to be picked up and read and later bought. From the first time I read the four-issue miniseries of Girl I was hooked on Kevin Taylor's work in the comic industry and have followed his work ever since. This trade paperback, or graphic novel, collects the original four-issue miniseries published in the beginning of the 1990's. One thing this collection has over those original issues were some added scenes in the beginning of the story where Girl, or Jaleira which is her real name, meets her friends Jesse and Jill at the park. There's also a brief, but extremely hot and dirty interlude between her a few guys she knows in the neighborhood. This interlude really sets up the rest of the book for the reader. Kevin Taylor's book is definitely not for the prudish and the easily embarrassed. Kevin Taylor's artwork are full of clean lines and curves. And when I say curves I do mean CURVES when it comes to Girl. Taylor also doesn't skimp with the detail when it comes to the legion of men who lusts after our intrepid heroine Girl. Some have called Taylor's style as being over-the-top and anatomically impossible. Well, all I have to say is that its a bloody comic book and I for one won't nitpick someone of Taylor's talent with how he should draw his figures. The style works for the character and the comic. The story is actually pretty interesting even though most readers will probably just skip forward from one sex scene to the next. These scenes are not bad mind you. They're actually pretty well done and even though some of the scenes have a look of extreme improbability to them they do put forward the extreme sexuality of the moment. The tale is one of Girl searching for a way to keep her smoking hot looks and figure and does so to extremes. She bargains with a demonic being for just such a fountain of youth, but in doing so she must now find someone to stand in her stead when its time to honor her bargain with the demon Malachi. This premise starts of as a simple seduce and sacrifice to something more complex with themes of Good and Evil making a mention. The premise also helps explain the many sexual encounters Girl comes across as she does so purposely in order to satisfy her bargain with Malachi. The rest of the story is pretty simple and even the most simple reader should be able to keep with the twist and turns. But in the end the story and plot really serves the main appeal of Girl and thats the steam, down and dirty sex scenes rife throughout the book. Each one becomes more and more extreme than the next until the final climactic final pages which would give any gothic-erotica film a run for its money.Kevin Taylor succeeds in creating a character in Girl who is both an extremely sexual and free individual and matched equally with a brain to match. Jaleira (Girl) will become Taylor's muse in his later works and her hot adventures doesn't end with the story in Girl, but will continue on with future graphic novels. Girl may have been published originally in 1990-91, but it still continues to be popular in the comic industry and those who are mature enough to read such books without making a mess.

My Letter to the World and Other Poems (Visions in Poetry), by Emily Dickinson Isabelle Arsenault

From School Library Journal

Grade 9 Up—Of the many collections of Dickinson's poetry available for young people, this one is unique in that most of the selections deal with death and loss. The first poem, "There's a Certain Slant of Light," sets the tone for the volume. "Because I Could Not Stop for Death" and "I Felt a Funeral in My Brain" continue the melancholy theme. The poems all run together and are printed without titles, making it difficult for readers unfamiliar with Dickinson's work to know where one selection ends and another begins. As a result, the impact of each poem is somewhat obscured. Arsenault's masterful mixed-media illustrations reflect the book's mood. The angular and shadowy pictures are either black and white or black on sepia, with only an occasional hint of color. A representation of Dickinson, in her characteristic white dress with her hair pulled back in a severe knot, haunts nearly every page. Because of its mature theme, this volume will interest older teens, and it could be seen as a balance for other collections that ignore Dickinson's fascination with death. Jeanette Winter's picture book Emily Dickinson's Letters to the World (Farrar, 2002) is lighter in mood and more likely to appeal to younger children.—Donna Cardon, Provo City Library, UT Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. From Booklist

As spare, intense, and mysterious as the words, the surreal illustrations for seven poems in this small volume in the Visions in Poetry series show Dickinson alone and indoors in a white dress, even as she drives with Death “in the chillest land / And on the strangest sea” and imagines a glowing little bird of hope flying through a dark storm. The long final biographical note about the introvert and recluse who gloried in being “Nobody” will take readers back to the poetry, which speaks as a “letter to the world,” as will the clear analysis of the mixed-media illustrations, in which Arsenault links the poet’s repeated images of isolation with her intense connections to nature. As with Wordsworth’s work, Dickinson’s exploration of the difference between loneliness and rich solitude will resonate with teens. Grades 7-12. --Hazel Rochman

This book is a beautiful representation of some of Emily Dickinson's most beloved and well-known poems. The artwork is lovely. The paper is very fine quality. Guaranteed to please a Dickinson fan and a wonderful way to introduce a young reader. I purchased a copy for myself and then got one for my young granddaugther.

I retired as a professor of English a few years ago. I have read Emily Dickinson most of my life. She is a very special poet whose musings speak various things to various readers. This is what makes great poetry. However, Emily Dickinson did not write this book. I personally believe it is the lowest in plagarism to take any writer's own words out of context and run them together as though they were one, cohesive story, which is not true.I found it more depressing than any of the poems used here, taken alone. The book won an AWARD, alright, for its ILLUSTRATIONS, which, while interesting, are actually depressing and a bit scary for children.

The great children's collections of Emily Dickinson's poems... I'm sure they exist. They'd have to. We're talking about one of the greatest (THE greatest?) American poets to put pen to paper. It would be patently ridiculous if there weren't a couple collections for kids out there. A quick search of my library's catalog and I see things like Poems for Youth which collected seventy-eight of her poems alongside illustrations, published in 1996. Or there was A Brighter Garden with illustrations by Tasha Tudor, which came out in 1990 with Philomel. Still, when all is said and done the Dickinson poetry section of my children's room looks a bit spare. And maybe it takes something a little shorter like My Letter to the World and Other Poems, produced by Kids Can Press's Visions in Poetry series to capture children's attention. A slim volume of a mere seven poems, this introduction to Emily Dickinson will lure in new fans with the woman's innate sense of mystery. Accompanied by illustrator Isabelle Arsenault's signature style, this book that will offer children an Emily finally worth getting to know. The seven poems in this book include Dickinson's best-known work. "I'm Nobody! Who are you?" snuggles up alongside "Because I could not stop for Death - He kindly stopped for me-" And from the first gessoed page that sports the titular opening poem to the well-known " `Hope' is a thing with feathers" found at the end, the book invokes Dickinson's life. Arsenault's mixed media works in watercolors, paints, inks, newsprint, photographs, you name it. But rather than give the book a crazed slapdash appearance, the images are cool and collected. They work seamlessly with the poetry, offering sparing jolts of color whenever you least expect it. This is not your standard Dickinson fare, a fact which gives you all the more reason to purchase it for a kid you know pronto.Recently I saw the actor Simon Callow perform Shakespeare's sonnets in a newly established order that told a kind of story. If a person had half a mind to, they could certainly do the same kind of performance with Dickinson's poetry as well. In fact, as I was reading My Letter to the World I tried to ascertain if the editors and illustrator were consciously attempting that kind of storyline. The transition between "I cannot live with you" to " `Hope' is a thing with feathers," suggests at a kind of continuity, but that may just lie within the brain of the reader. I guess that one of the things I appreciated about this book was that if you were looking for some kind of a tale (and I'd say a large percentage of your child readers will be) then you could probably find one here. If, however, you found such a notion unpleasant then you could simply say that these poems were placed together due to a pleasing continuity and not some grossly forced narrative. However you chose to look at it, I'm just grateful that they ended with the "hope" poem. Maybe you think that was a given, but considering the subject matter of the previous poems, it makes sense to end on a mildly lighter note.Americans love outsider art. I think it appeals to our sense of art as something spontaneous and wild, growing up in unconventional areas. To call Dickinson "outsider" because she wrote primarily (though not exclusively) for herself may sound like a bit of a stretch but it's not wholly inaccurate. In fact, the real problem may come in considering her not outsider enough. There is a danger inherent in any Dickinson collection for kids; the possibility that the editors will present her as twee. This is not a cutesy writer. Sure, she wrote little poems that begin with sentences like, "I'm Nobody! Who are you?" with their misleadingly sweet overtones. A little delving, though, and you begin to see how dark even Dickinson's lightest work was. That's where Isabelle Arsenault comes in.Now this Visions in Poetry series produced by Kids Can Press has been pairing hip, alternative, and generally magnificent artists alongside classic poems for a couple years now. It's hard to forget Joe Morse's inner city Casey at the Bat or the stunning take on Owl and the Pussycat, The attempted by Stephane Jorisch. That the producers of this series selected Ms. Arsenault, an artist of the adult persuasion, is notable. Arsenault's style is by turns bleak and thoughtful, stunning and contemplative. Her previous children's book, Mr. Gauguin's Heart was released in the United States just last year as her children's debut. So what I found I admired most about her work on this book was her rejection of the sentimental. I am not saying that her style precludes emotion, but rather that she clearly "gets" Dickinson. Somehow this artist and this author belong together. See if you don't agree. At the end of each Visions in Poetry title there is a lengthy biography of both the poet and the illustrator. Sometimes when it comes to the latter you can find yourself wondering just how much of the information there was provided by the artist and how much was extrapolated by the editors. For example, in the case of Ms. Arsenault there is a great deal of attention paid to her visual symbolism and references. I did not know that Dickinson was prone to wearing a lot of white, but Arsenault makes certain to include all pictures of Emily in this book in dresses of that color. But then there are sentences like, "The twin-towered cathedral and ominous shadow in `There's a certain Slant of light,' eerily suggestive of the events of 9/11," that give me pause. I guess I can read that interpretation into the work if I want to, but was that the artist's real intent? The editor certainly thinks so but on this and other notes I should like a little additional confirmation, please. When Poetry Month rolls around my library will be swamped with kids holding up their school assignments. Some of them will be assigned Emily Dickinson, or maybe just one of her poems. How satisfying it will be to hand then My Letter to the World. Oh sure, they'll probably wrinkle their noses at the odd professionalism of the packaging. A smyth sewn caseboard? Puh-leeze. But after some trial and error they will see how engrossing, or at the very least stimulating, this Arsenault/Dickinson combo can be. I can't claim that My Letter to the World will convert your reluctant readers into poetry-popping addicts, but at the very least it won't turn them off the woman. And who knows? Maybe they'll even find themselves reading and rereading a line here and there, just to taste the flavor of it. A great new addition to the Visions in Poetry series and an artist worth keeping an eye on.

"My Letter to the World and Other Poems" is an interesting and exceptional book.Isabelle Arsenault illustrates seven of Emily Dickinson's poems--still so new--with great artistry. The overall production of the book is beautiful as well (KCP Poetry, An Imprint of Kids Can Press).According to information stated on the flyleaf, this book is part of the Visions In Poetry series "designed to connect with a modern audience." One of the purposes is to inspire discussion of classic works. I first bought this book at Mead Public Library in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, USA. It was part of a collection of books that people could donate to the library. In terms of my own library, I own a few different collections of Emily's poetry; and I enjoy this book as the special short collection it is.

Review

"The book is not just for inebriates, but for serious tourists."-- Sherryl Connelly, New York Daily News"Overall, I think this guide is entertaining and funny... Although the title was a little offputting, it contained some valuable information for those looking to party in different places around the country and around the world."-- Alyssa Pirrello, GoNOMAD.com"The fine folks over at Matador Travel just dropped a guidebook that isn't full of tired, lame, or even BS travel information. It's called 101 Places to Get Fucked Up Before You Die and it brings together the most irreverent and legit accounts of drinking, nightlife and travel culture around the world."-- BroBible.com"it wasn't just the obvious destinations and festivals -- Burning Man, Oktoberfest, and New York nightclubs -- that made it into the book (though those are in there, too). It was also about finding places that were off-the-beaten track: Locales that were not only fun to visit culturally, but that also knew how to have a good time."-- Megan Willett, Business Insider"... an ode to overindulgence that's also a surprisingly handy travel guide."- Brian Kevin, Outside Magazine

I came across this book on Amazon, and read the introduction in the "look inside" preview. Despite the title, it's about find finding the best party in each of the cities. It also has a section about annual parties or events such as Burning Man. I gave it 4 stars, it accomplishes what it sets out to do; however because the book was written by several authors, each may have their own interpretation of what the best party is.

I plan on doing all of these. This book is awesome for anyone that loves to travel.

The book arrived on time and directly as described in the description! Absolutely no problems!

Bought as gift for my boss, he liked it! lol ;)

Awesome book. My friend loved it and it's now on his coffee table

This was purchased as a gift for my oldest son, he got a kick out of it.

Bucket list inspiration for the bored friend in your life.

The latest issue of this essential chemist's companion, but with little in the way of updates and newer compounds. The publisher needs to assemble a group of chemists to make major revisions soon, or this will become a historical reference rather than a current reference.

I'm a chemist. The Merck Index is a must to me.

A jewel, especially if you need the patent numbers of the compounds.

I've been referring to the MERCK INDEX since 1960. It sure beats Beilstein for quick superficial information on the materials of interest. The scope of this work seems to go up one plateau every decade; for example in the breadth of the appendices., and inclusion of the names of the new drugs.

We use this book for lab work with essential oils, it's a great reference and also gives you access to the online reference materials.

I bought it for my son and he said that he will use it for the rest of his life!

Great Product!

Great consulting book
